Hey Andrew! I was checking out this receiver to pair with a future pair of Wharfedale Linton Heritage, but as 4ohm speakers, I should then go with the 5000 I imagine? I could also go for a stereo amplifier to pair with these such as an Audiolab 6000A, but I feel like the room correction is something that I need. Maybe it is not however? Can you lend me a hand?

Andrew. I just bought an AN1000. I’m putting overheads in the ceiling for my surrounds.
Can I add an extra on each channel and is so, how would I wire them.

@Andrew Rivett Nice one I've been looking at the AN1000 myself it's a bit pricey here in New Zealand at $1890. NZD and the parallel sub outs put me off, I purchased my first sony 5.1 receiver in 1999 it lasted best part of 20 years before HDMI became such a must have pain in the ass.
I have a yammy RX- V483 set up as 3.1 in the bedroom I think I prefer the Yammy sound but once again the RX-V6A are the best part of $2000 here and I got 2 teenage daughters with 2 cats a wife and a bulldog to feed I gotta get my priorities right I need a new system.
I'm jamming Teskey Bros on the 1050 right now running all 6 of my wharfedale 9.5 towers and 3 subs rocking the hood

Sony receivers are always so much fun. I wish they would bring back all of the DSP sound modes from the past. It was fun to play around with when you were gaming or just messing around. Use to be so much fun back when I was a teenager. Great review.

My Yamaha RX-A2A is a very nice receiver and was a good match to my Klipsch RP-8000F. Now here comes the Sony STR-AZ5000ES with 360 SSM and I’m speechless. WOW.
The Klipsch now sound more detailed, more defined, the lows are solid. Music takes a new meaning. Movies sound better than our Dallas/Ft Worth theaters!
Last night we saw the first episode of The Last of Us and when the plane crashed, we swear it hit our roof! Goodness Gracious, the 5000ES is one impressive receiver. I’m keeping it. Street explosions felt like we were there.

Funny, I secretly also thought the sound of my ‘budget’ Sony 1080 bested my ‘respected’ 2 channel amps of Yamaha, Audiolab and Emotiva. The measly 1080 - It made my Linton’s rock and my Klipsch purr noticeably better than my three other amps. It was a secret that I would never speak of, that is, until now. Thanks for being a comment trailblazer for us closet Sony fans!

Another great video Andrew! While I don't always choose Sony over a competing product, I have never owned a Sony product I regretted purchasing. Nice to hear that the Yamaha RX-V6A (TSR-700) is still in the mix for comparisons. I suspect the STR-AN1000 is less buggy than the RX-V6A but at the same time I do like that the RX-V6A has LF/RF pre-outs and a built-in phono pre-amp. I don't like the trend of entry AVRs not having LF/RF pre-outs. Adding an external amplifier to a "beginner" AVR can be a great upgrade to your system and allows you to keep that budget AVR around a lot longer in your audiophile journey. My two cents.

Ok, so the Sony video on the AN1000 tells us it has bi-directional Bluetooth (most commonly to connect headphones, I’d guess). This could be a semi-essential feature for some people and it would be nice if the description went beyond “it has Bluetooth”. And, seriously, it would be a killer feature in a soundbar (we have a Samsung HW-B650 in the bedroom without this feature), which I’d have to think is mostly a bedroom or apartment audio enhancement and where you wouldn’t want to bother nearby people sometimes. It might be a good idea to include this information in the discussion of receivers as it’s being included in more receivers (and I’d hope soundbars) and would be good to know. Thanks!

I wouldn't buy the new Sony receivers for now if I were you. I bought a AN1000 along with AZ5000ES around 2.5 weeks ago and now they are both having issues. They freeze every so often when switching between Apple TV 4K and PS5 or other source connected to HDMI. It shows the picture, but no sound. The display keeps showing the input source, in my case: Media Box FOREVER and it will not go off. I need to unplug the receivers and turn them back on in order to make them work again. The most annoying thing is once I unplug, it takes almost 2 full minutes for them to be able to function again. The display will show " PLEASE WAIT" until it start working again. The freezing issues used to happen once every 3 days, but now it does that every single day. The 360 sound is amazing and I enjoy listening to spatial music on them, the surround effect is definitely better than my Denon 4800H and my Arcam 21, but the quality control of the Sony AVRS is questionable. Fortunately, I can still return them and 100% they will be packed up today.

I think more and more vinyl rigs will likely start having wireless connections (don't hate me audiophiles) in which case the need for a phono preamp will no doubt diminish. People have to face facts, that while vinyl sales may have overtaken CDs, both are at all-time lows compared to where they once were, so it's not as if the. market is rapidly growing.

Thank you so much...love your videos. Your recommendation and overview of the 360 spatial mapping+virtual speakers made all the difference. After years of budget 5.1 receivers (Yamaha and Onkyo)...I finally moved up to Atmos and bought and setup a new Sony 1000 7.2 atmos receiver yesterday(including using amazon basics banana plugs which are awesome). This decision was driven purely for the 360 spatial mapping+virtual speaker placement correction along with virtual surround backs (makes my 5.2.2 setup seem as having more speakers)...I used the "engineer" sound curve (“the Sony listening room standard” frequency characteristics)....simply mind blowing! I never knew my system could sound so massive, so enveloping, and so crisp/clean. It is the first time ever I ran a calibration and never needed to make a single adjustment. It's wonderful.
I don't need external amps as I never listen at reference levels nor do I have demanding speakers in my relatively small/medium room.

Well Andrew, you sold me again. In October 2017, I replaced my 14 year old JVC 8030-VBK Home Theatre receiver, which suddenly stopped working, with the Sony STR-DN1080. I chose the Sony based on your (and several other) TH-cam reviews and recommendations. I was not disappointed, and felt that it was a great value. (I think I paid $550 at Best Buy, with a $100 off sale price). At 14 years and $318, the JVC 8030 certainly had a good run.
2017 for me was kind of the year of Sony, and the refresh cycle for all of my aging home theatre equipment.
I replaced my 12 year old JVC 52Z575 rear projection TV (purchased in Jan 2005 at Sears for an unbelievable $2862!) with the Sony XBR65X930E 4K UHD TV (purchased at Best Buy in Dec 2017 for $2000). The JVC 52Z575 stillI works just fine, but is only 720p, doesn't have a built-in ATSC digital tuner, and being a rear projection TV, requires a substantial warm up and cool down period to help prolong bulb life. (Fortunately, I never had to replace the bulb, which was about a $300 part) Also the cooling fan was noticeably noisy in the background, but at the time it was cutting edge technology (first generation progressive 720p HD vs 1080i interlaced HD).
I replaced my 10 year old Sony BDP-301 Blu-ray player with the Sony UBP-X800. (purchased at Best Buy for $200). Like the JVC TV, the BDP-301 still works just fine, but is incredibly slow by todays standards (well, let's be honest, it was was unbearably slow, even when it was new!🤣). It was a first generation Blu-ray player, and really had inadequate memory and processor power at the time for the Blu-ray 1080p HD standard.
Over the past month or so, the STR-DN1080 has suddenly starting exhibiting problem signs. The soft start power relays will occasionally suddenly shut off and then try numerous times to cycle back on. Eventually it gets there and turns back on, but the problem has been getting worse lately. A couple days ago, this issue happened more than a half dozen times in a row, taking several minutes to recover each time. I decided that maybe it was time to start looking for a good replacement.
I looked at Sony's web site and saw the AN1000, then I searched TH-cam, and and here you are again, reviewing the brand new STR-AN1000, which is the successor to STR-DN1080. I watched your review, and then went to Best Buy's web site and placed the order yesterday. It was delivered today. I haven't got it installed yet but am looking forward to it.
Just as a side note, in reviewing my purchase history (I have used Quicken since 1998, and used MacMoney from 1985 to 1998 to manage my finances, so the history is very easy to access and review), I notice that the older hardware either lasted much longer (14 years, 12 years, 10 years), or never actually failed, but just eventually became obsolete. The STR-DN1080 on the other hand has only lasted half that time at 6 years. As you stated in your review, the technology in the AN1000 is significantly better than what was in the DN1080, and arguably after 6 years, the technological improvements justify the need to replace it, but I probably wouldn't have been looking or done so if wasn't showing signs of impending failure. It has been working great for 6 years, and if it wasn't failing, I might have been more than happy to use it for another 6 years.
On the other hand, I paid $650 for the AN1000, which was the same price as the DN1080 6 years ago. In that respect, to pay the same price 6 years later, but get 6 year newer technology, it not such a bad deal. And at $600 for 6 years use of the DN1080, or $100 /year = $8.33/month, I think I got great value for the money spent, even if I wasn't planning on replacing it now. And with the serendipitous release of the AN1000, the timing couldn't have been better.
Thanks again for another great review and timely recommendation!.

The Sony A/V receiver comeback continues. This is what I call the Best Buy or the Costco receiver, the one made for the mainstream budget-conscious shopper that they'll pick up at Best Buy or Costco or Sam's Club. A great deal that they don't have to think over too hard or fuss about. The one without any preamp out jacks that gives you exactly what is being advertised, no more and no less. Every AVR maker sells a model specifically geared towards this market and while we enthusiasts snub our noses at it, I'd be willing to bet my current Denon 3600H that this is in fact where the majority of the A/V receiver market actually lies and Sony is wise to tackle it again with this refresh that gives some of the great ES refreshed lineup features for a decent price. Glad it got a good review from you guys.

And my DN1000 did, the DN1020 I sourced for a friends’ setup (still rocking), DN1040 (another friend), DN1050 (still another friend - also still rocking)
I would jump on a 7000ES if I had the money - and would stay with my 1080 over the AN1000

Bought the 1080 about 2.5 years ago for about $650 Best Buy because a very expensive Yamaha I had for years finally had sections die and I was in a hurry. First impressions were plenty of power, ran hot, menu system I hated, my music never sounded so clean but we watch movies a lot and after fiddling with all the Sony special sauce I could not get clean dialog to our liking. Sold on ebay in 5min and bought TSR-700. Love it, love the app, plenty of power for what I do and just plain Yamaha useability. Loved your review and I still like that $2k Sony ES, lol! Next up, new center speaker for us.

Calculated the cost to import the $3000 aud receiver, would cost me $1700 just to get it here and use a step down transformer with a good enough rating.
That is $4700 (marantz 40 cinema cost) just to get in in and maybe the step down could be an issue. 😢

One other thing to note about the ES line vs. the AN1000 is that the AN1000 uses a fixed, non-replaceable/non-removable power cord and the ES line receivers all use a removable power cords. That may be important if you are the type of person that likes to replace your factory-supplied power cord on your audio equipment with higher-end, after-market power cables that are built to a far higher standard using much higher quality materials.

@@OuchOuchMyNutz The AZ1000 is a slightly higher-end receiver with several upgraded components: power supply capacitors, heat sync, digital circuit and power transformer. It also includes an RS232 port to allow it to tie into various types of home automation systems as well. I believe it is also built using a slightly sturdier chassis/housing too. I think the AZ1000 can also be configured though a web interface (along with the rest of the receivers in the ES lineup)
