Great cover. After I was these I always wonder "how does anyone play a cover that good?" I won't lie when I say this but other covers aren't as good as yours. Your covers are the best ones I've seen. Keep it up man!
TJ's my go-to for Rush bass covers. Need to learn to play a Rush song? Just put TJ in quarter speed mode. It's educational as well as slightly hilarious.
Fantastic bass work. As a guitar player of 30+ years and a huge Rush fan, you've become an inspiration for me as I've played nothing but bass the last two years.
It's the same poor person who dislikes everything I upload. I'd actually be concerned if I didn't see at least two dislikes per video, wondering if something happened to him/her/them.
Troy, I see I am not the only admirer of your talent. You don't find a talent like yours every day. You know I am in awe of you. Have great weekend Troy and thanks. :-)
You should do a cover of "Animate" by Rush. I really love that song. Your bass cover give me something to aspire to and make my day brighter, and I hope you keep doing this.
@@TJH3113 Awesome man! I am bass player too, and know how hard it is to play geddy´s bass lines. Thank you for sharing! Hugs from Brazil, the country where rush fans sing yyz!
Awesome! Nailed it!! I can't say enough about your videos. A real inspiration. I've been trying to learn bass forever and still can't get the hang if it.
once again, a great video from one cool ass dude. I know this is your favorite time of the year, hope you have some pretty cool halloween projects/plans!
People hate rush because they don't understand them and how complex complete musicians they all truly were . And they got along no break ups no replacement drummer guitar they all got along until Neil passed away makes me sad we will never see rush perform live again . Greetings from Buffalo New York
This was an interesting era in Geddy's playing style, when he started using chords with songs like Dreamline and One Little Victory, and also one of the most daunting as I don't do well with those quick strumming-to-fingering transitions. I think this song is probably the apex of that era. I have never been able to play this, it's actually one of the few songs I simply get too frustrated with to even try again. I know the chords are just accompanied by an open string, but I just can't get with it, man. That's one of the big things I love about Geddy's playing, though. He's been through so many explorations of style, it's incredible, and props to you for being able to do this song. I'm curious if you have a Rush song that's just too much to even want to master, but I'm pretty sure I've seen you play everything, so I'd doubt it.
I remember when Counterparts came out. I could kind of tell what he was doing with the strumming/flamenco stuff and I really thought about whether I wanted to take the time to try and emulated that style of playing. I decided against it because I knew the only outlet I'd have for it would be for when I played those songs. I've seen a few guys do it really well and I'm always impressed when I see them. Chris, the bass player from Lotus Land and a young fellow named Adam Cyran are two that come to mind. You make a great point about Geddy. Most people would be happy to come up with one singular style to last them throughout their career, but Geddy never stopped evolving. Like their albums, I like some periods better than others, but have great respect for all of it. "Animate" is one song that I don't think I will ever attempt.
@@TJH3113 I've actually played Animate, or rather tried to, aaaaaaand it's not fun. I can almost get the strumming down (not perfectly by any means), but it's a constant strumming pattern and if you didn't have carpal tunnel before, that song is a good way to get it. It's a grueling endurance challenge. I definitely can't do it the whole song, I actually give out around the second verse. I'm pretty sure Geddy has finger implants. I also highly doubt I play it right, anyway. I think he uses a lot of chords in that song, and I've never been able to find tablature that reflects that. I play the "Rush For Dummies" version, I'm sure, and I can't find a video of anyone using chords. Even saw one guy that used a pick. It's terrible.
ok - that's it - putting my bass away for good now! Seriously Troy - can i just steal 1% of your skill on picking these tunes up like this. This is about one of my most favored bass licks, and a song that I'm not able to listen to while driving for some reason the gas pedal goes down more and more. Great job! Please keep sharing.
Sounds killer! I always preferred the way Geddy plays the bass break after the second chorus live. Little flairs of the lydian mode very apparent in a more aggressive, Geddy-like way.
Awesome. Great tone and you slayed that song. I was wondering if I could request a song. Show us Dog Years. My favorite song on Test and Driven. Thanks TJH. You rock hard man!
Well done Troy, a fine rendition. Funnily enough though, it's the most tense I've ever seen you when playing. I guessing this was rather tough to play.
Thanks a a lot Troy! Now I need to get a Black Geddy Jazz, without a pick guard! And freaking have to explain to my wife, why I need a 4th bass! But, seriously, Dude, you effing rock!
Michael Osztertag The remixed version made me see for the first time that Vapor Trails is actually a really good album. It's nearly impossible to see that listening to the original.
I have a 72 Jazz bass, and still can't get this tone. I play very hard with fingers. This bass has never been set up before thoug, and I'm not sure the pickups are working correctly.
this song is as old as i am lol one of my favorites though. i haven't picked up my bass in about 5 years but i think i'm going to. maybe i wont be as stubborn about learning theory this time.
Any exercise you can recommend for string skipping on a bass? I'm still very slow at the 16th notes alternating strings and it's not terribly clean either. I can do runs pretty decently but the string skipping kills me lol.
I'd suggest looking up "Scott's Bass Lessons." That fellow is really a great instructor. The only advise I could offer would be to play the things you can't, over and over, until you can. That's what I do.
Ah, I've got what you mean. Yeah, I can't think of a single Rush song with multiple bass parts simultaneously. Guitar on the other hand...lol (Alex loves his overdubs)
Every time i search for a Rush bass cover, your videos always appear, and you play this songs perfectly. I have a question, how do you get that punchy tone? sound almost like Tool!
Thanks. I use a touch of preset compression in GarageBand but nothing you'd really notice. This track is a bit louder than most and certain videos, like this one, tend to push the levels to their limit which results in a bit of a squashed sound. It cuts a bit of the high end as well.
I have a feeling that I wasn't really happy with the take and was not looking forward to doing it over again. It turns out that whatever bothered me about it could not have been too awful bad.
Awesome cover, thanks for posting! I noticed you haven't done any song from Vapor Trails... Shame on you! :D You should take a look at "The Stars Look Down" - it's got a raunchy bass line!
Zillaman101 That would be fine. I'm not partial to Precisions because their necks tend to be a bit chunkier. Jazz basses have a slimmer neck and, I believe, are a bit more versatile. I would play as many basses as you can and pick the one that sounds and feels the best to you.
my first bass was a squier p bass.. they're "ok" at best... I would highly, and I mean HIGHLY recommend the Tobias Toby bass.. they are even less expensive than the p bass and they have extraordinary sound for their price. I bought one off hand after playing it in a store and being really impressed, I took a look at the price tag and thought something was wrong. I enjoy playing the Tobias Toby as much if not more than my basses that cost over a thousand dollars. Highly recommend you take a look at one.

Just for fun, this isn't the only Rush song with overdubbed bass. The solo runs in YYZ are overdubbed
