    A question I ALWAYS get, "How much does this cost?" Today, we are looking at Recreation Ponds, Swim Ponds, Natural Pools and talking about how much they cost. Also, we'll go through what it's like to live with and take care of one of these recreation ponds with our good friend, Alan Decker from Decker's Pondscapes in Pattersonville, NY

      Love this garden design and water feature as well! On our small urban terraced lot - 5500 sf (though directly adjacent a wild canyon and a couple miles from the ocean) in arid SoCa we lack a swimming pool but we have five water features: a lion’s head spitter onto a hanging wall bowl out front; a semi-circular former planter adjacent a flagstone dining terrace with a center mounted bird’s bath fountain overflowing into the small pool; a 5’ diameter pond with an antique hand pump filler and stone coping and benches, and two “horse troughs” between planted concrete urns on the lower terrace with copper tubing mounted on mesh powder coated frames against a green planted wall backdrop. All features have professional lighting and life is magical because of them.

    My friends family did this in the 1970s themselves and even built their son a house on it kinda like your litt!e beach house. I'm sure there were small differences but it looked incredibly similar! We loved swimming in it and catching frogs! I don't think it had those massive pumps but I may be wrong.

    Love this pond! Big fan of yours Jaak and the whole aquascape scene. Having just bought my house last year, it'll be a bit until we can save up enough to get going. We need to go big, like maybe a 20x25 or 30. We just moved to Sparta and actually pass by your shop often. Would love to pick your brain on designs and options. We are basically on a massive slope and have an awesome chunk of property to play with.

    Jaak, your rec ponds are amazing. I've been hooked on your videos, researching options to build a small pond of my own. Two questions:
    1. How long do the liners last? Realistically, when will I need to replace them? Is replacing liners a big job in itself?
    2. Do we need to have the pump for the filtration unit running 24x7?
    Thanks for showing us what is possible with natural pools!

    • @AtlantisWaterGardens
      @AtlantisWaterGardens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The liner is made of EPDM rubber and our ponds are built with rock and gravel that covers all the surface of the liner. What kills a liner is U/V light from the sun. As long as it's covered it greatly increases the life span of the liner (well over 20 years) and yes you need a pump for the filtration. Hope this helps!

Spoke to a couple from Buffalo area that said I could do it but need to dig deeper than the frost line. Idk where that it but $165,000 for basic pond is crazy! Looks amazing! But I have serious misgivings about swimming in water that hasn't been treated with chlorine or ozone or similar. You probably don't have to worry about amebic meningitis in NY's climate, but there was a recent death in CA (07/08/21) and another this month in NC. Admittedly rare - but *unheard of* in properly maintained chlorinated pools. More common are _Pseudomonas_ ear infections.
    All that said, if I could afford a rec pond I'd still get one. It'd be worth it to wade among the water lilies.

I'd love a place to swim like this, but snakes and gators in some of our natural ponds already, so I think it'd be a hard sell to get anyone into the water iLOL.
