Fish keeping hobbyists myself so I really love watching explanations of filtration systems. I live near Hill AFB, not hard to find here in the Wasatch. I saw your fabulous work on Garden Answer recently. I was amazed by the construction, from drawing out the shape of the pond in the soil with your foot, to the grand reveal. I saw the first pond you installed for Laura and Aaron, and can see why they had you build another one for them. Your backyard transformation is just jaw dropping! Great work.
Wow! Your landscapers did a great job - what you have complements the view, and the mountains and pond together look great! I think sitting at the upper end, looking down the stream and then off into the valley towards the lake is the best view! You have quaking aspen ! Luck-ee! Enjoy them! I’m just under 5000’ next to the Sierras but aspen don’t grow well here.

Beautiful pond 🏝️we hired a professional to build a koi fish 🐠 pond with waterfalls I can’t say enough of the peace it gives us after loosing our beloved son in 2017 😪it’s definitely a therapy just hearing the waterfalls and birds taking baths we have koi fishes and a turtle 🐢

I’m so excited about this water feature. Right under your feet you have a beautifully created landscape with lots of activity to make it fun. Water moving, fish swimming around, ambient lighting and fire bowls built in on both sides. The take your eyes upward and you have majestic mountains. What else could a person ask for! I have a upper deck with a spiral staircase that was handmade by a local welder. I had to rebuild the deck because it was there since the 80’s, but I kept the staircase and used it for the new deck. Good choice👍🏼

Utah is pretty great! My son spent his college years in SLC. Such a different landscape than what he grew up with. (New Hampshire) "Everything is brown. The dirt, the trees, the houses. Why is everything so brown?" was his first reaction, but he sure did love it out there. Some really stunning views out there!

Absolutely perfect! I don't have mountain views but instead gorgeous sunsets with foot hills that I planned the house around. Two level screened porch and lots of windows. Everyone says I have a million dollar view. You my friend have multimillion dollar views. Well done!!

That looks like Paradise ❤ This is pond related but has to do with the turf. I live along the Northern Front Range Rockies and the I-25 corridor. I also have a fabulous view. I have 5 German Shepherds and was having a rotten time keeping grass alive, so 4 years ago, I also got rid of my grass and put in turf. We have horrible clay soil, so gardens have to be heavily amended, but having 5 large dogs on turf meant extensive work to create good drainage and proper grading. I have a nice amount of shade, so I don't have problems with it getting too hot for their feet. Once a month, I sanitize and use a deodorizer so I don't have odors. The biggest problem I had to figure out was how to get the hair up. My German Shepherds happen to be European Longcoats so twice a year, each of them shed their undercoat and even though they are brushed sometimes every day, they leave clumps of wooly undercoat all over the turf. I tried EVERYTHING to clean it off and was so frustrated. One issue is when we play ball, it sticks to the ball, they started swallowing way more hair than normal. If you have ever seen a cat with a hair ball.....that was happening to my dogs and it wasn't normal. But the wet ball gave me an idea. I watered the turf lightly, grabbed a clean heavy duty shop/push Broom. I went up and down like I was mowing, only pushing the broom. Tons of hair. I had to stop about every 2 rows to clean the bristles because there was so much hair but it works Fantastic!!!!!! It works for dry leaves, sticks, you name it!!!!
I pressure wash our turf and sometimes just vacuum it with a regular household vacuum cleaner. The pressure washing really does the job though and it’s pretty much clay underneath.
@@kathylong2513 I will have to try pressure washing it. It's worth a try!! Great idea, thanks. I did try the vacuum, both one with a brush roller and the big shop vac, as well as the lawn mower with the blade raised just above the turf. That worked better at removing hair than anything but the push broom, but it really made me nervous to accidentally hit the turf. I also tried several rakes, the leaf blower, the air compressor, and my high velocity blower for blowing out and drying the dogs' coats and prepping for shows. I don't like doing that either because overheating the blower motor shortens the life of the blower. It's too expensive to do that. I wonder if a doggie daycare would give me some tips!!!! 🙂🐾🐾
Have been really enjoying watching you build Laura and Erin’s amazing pond on Garden Answer and had to check out your channel. Welcome to Utah!! You picked a prime property, especially with the reservoir in the distance. I love the Heber valley and always wish I’d bought a piece of property up there many years ago before all the building exploded in the area and prices went through the roof. I love what you’ve done with your yard. When I saw the lilies I wondered how they’d do at that elevation. Have raccoons and mountain lions discovered your fish yet? The only thing I wouldn’t have done is put in a spiral staircase. They can be so dangerous to walk down, especially if you are carrying food or anything. I would have done stairs on the same side of the deck but built one that came down off the same spot down a few steps to a landing then turn and go straight down along the side of the deck to the yard. I agree the original stairs were a very poor design. Where did you live before moving here?
Hey Greg! Question: With electric bills and other costs of living so high I’m curious how much it costs to keep the pumps going year round on these ponds. What happens when the power goes out during big storms, sometimes lasting several days?

We have horrible clay soil, so gardens have to be heavily amended, but having 5 large dogs on turf meant extensive work to create good drainage and proper grading. I have a nice amount of shade, so I don't have problems with it getting too hot for their feet.
Once a month, I sanitize and use a deodorizer so I don't have odors. The biggest problem I had to figure out was how to get the hair up. My German Shepherds happen to be European Longcoats so twice a year, each of them shed their undercoat and even though they are brushed sometimes every day, they leave clumps of wooly undercoat all over the turf. I tried EVERYTHING to clean it off and was so frustrated. One issue is when we play ball, it sticks to the ball, they started swallowing way more hair than normal. If you have ever seen a cat with a hair ball.....that was happening to my dogs and it wasn't normal. But the wet ball gave me an idea.
I watered the turf lightly, grabbed a clean heavy duty shop/push Broom. I went up and down like I was mowing, only pushing the broom. Tons of hair. I had to stop about every 2 rows to clean the bristles because there was so much hair but it works Fantastic!!!!!! It works for dry leaves, sticks, you name it!!!!
I pressure wash our turf and sometimes just vacuum it with a regular household vacuum cleaner. The pressure washing really does the job though and it’s pretty much clay underneath.

I did try the vacuum, both one with a brush roller and the big shop vac, as well as the lawn mower with the blade raised just above the turf. That worked better at removing hair than anything but the push broom, but it really made me nervous to accidentally hit the turf. I also tried several rakes, the leaf blower, the air compressor, and my high velocity blower for blowing out and drying the dogs' coats and prepping for shows. I don't like doing that either because overheating the blower motor shortens the life of the blower. It's too expensive to do that.
I wonder if a doggie daycare would give me some tips!!!! 🙂🐾🐾

I love the Heber valley and always wish I’d bought a piece of property up there many years ago before all the building exploded in the area and prices went through the roof.
I love what you’ve done with your yard. When I saw the lilies I wondered how they’d do at that elevation. Have raccoons and mountain lions discovered your fish yet? The only thing I wouldn’t have done is put in a spiral staircase. They can be so dangerous to walk down, especially if you are carrying food or anything. I would have done stairs on the same side of the deck but built one that came down off the same spot down a few steps to a landing then turn and go straight down along the side of the deck to the yard. I agree the original stairs were a very poor design.
