Living at the TN babtist childrens home, this was the highlight of every summer for us. Loved going there. Mr. and Mrs. Thorton were some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Thanks for having us every summer.
he built it for everyone to enjoy and that man has a heart of gold because of that. not just for him and his family but for everyone to use. takes a special person to want to do that.

The hydrostatic pressure really doesn't do anything to aid in filtration. He just moved the typical sand filter to inside the pool, making it more difficult to change in the future and impossible to backwash. But it works, and better than my external sand filter. I'm guessing the volume of sand is such that it'll probably outlast the life of the concrete pool, meaning he can just replace it when he re-drains the pool next.
Spent some of my free time this summer helping with the upkeep of the gardens. Mr. Micky and Mrs. Jane are just as amazing in person as they seem in this video! They use their pool as an opportunity to meet new people and share Jesus’ love with them. Awesome pool, and a lovely couple 🤍 Glad that someone took notice of them and their hard work.

Wow what a throwback! I had this video randomly show up on my suggested videos and thought, that looks familiar... I hovered over the thumbnail and saw Micky and thought, I recognize him too! I grew up and went to church with Micky's son. We had a few church parties at his house and got to swim in this pool about 20 years ago. It is as incredible as it looks in this video. And so cool to see all the old videos from building it over the years. I agree, the rope swing was way more fun than the diving board!
Amazing work. Been in the pool industry for 17 years in Atlanta. This is the coolest pool I've ever seen. Genius design on the gravity fed sand filter system.
We agree! Such a clever way to do it. Also apparently it’s a “duck repellent” as well. Micky told us it’s unusual for ducks to sit in a row, so ducks flying over assume they are sick and don’t land on the pool.
The point in life is to keep a smile on your face, and keep your family close. He's a win in my book. Did it himself. Which is part of the process. That pool is his pride and joy.

One thing I love about these locations is that they're all built and owned by just regular people. There's no zillionaires that do these kind of projects, they just hire the work out. The creativity and dedication of ONE DUDE with a passion project will never fail to surprise you, though.

And some of the innovations were his own design, which makes me think he probably has a career as a tradesman in plumbing or something of the like. The point was more that it's achievable for a civilian despite being on an amusement-park level of size and craftsmanship.

This man is clearly a multi-millionaire (I'd say 8-figure net worth minimum), with enough money to not just own a large home on a large piece of property, but also to spend on this pool. Not to mention the time and energy that he has clearly put into it, which is only possible because of his wealth.

As for the property value - bruh, the man lives in Covington, Tennessee, right outside of Memphis. Have you SEEN the property values of that town? $250,000 for a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with a huge yard. On Zillow right now. Owning property doesn't make you part of the 1% in that part of the country.

The main question I'd have for him is if he'd considered a pond and why he preferred a huge pool. Ponds are more complicated, getting the balance right with plants and fish, but at that size it's easier and it avoids the cost of using pounds of chlorine daily. While it's extremely rare to have a pool this size at a private residence, ponds this size are much more common. Regular testing and work to make sure they're safe to swim in doesn't sound like more work and expense than a pool this large. But it is cool that he built an actual pool. Different vibe, different water, better for different things. Unlike myself, he grew up swimming in a pool frequently. So I understand that he loves pools. What he built is neat! I love the DIY spirit and the filter system is clever! The graphic really helped me understand it. So what happened when he needed to change all the water? Did he pump it all out and pour it down the drain to the municipal sewer or what? Thanks for the video! I appreciate the effort that went into it. It's a great presentation of the pool.
Thank you! For the water, he said it's only been drained 3 times. He told us he usually drains it on his property and waters the pasture behind the pool. When he vacuums it, he does the same.Cheers!
I waited until I was in my mid 60's to build a swimming pool and wished I had done it when we built our home in 1989. It is no where as big as this beauty, but it is enclosed with a nice sitting TV area & solar heated. I do love all the rock work around your pool and the sand bottom. That is a super great touch. I would add solar panels and make the pool salt. Salt water pools are typically cheaper to maintain instead of chlorine. It could cut costs for prolonging the pool.
This grandpa and father and husband and wife has the best hobby ever building your own backyard getaway pool and beach. Its amazing. You can build anything as long as you keep at it and dont ever give up it might take you 30 years to finish it but you still enjoy it while you are building and adding on as well cause you do the pool first and get water in it then you keep going so you can enjoy it to motivate tou to keep going

That sand filter is really ingenious using the hydrostatic pressure of all the water above it. This guy is a true renaissance thinker. Respect 🙌🏾
