    Of course I’ve always loved your art, the last time I saw your channel, I think you were just getting going with some shorter videos… but I rediscovered it as I’ve been struggling to find a video that showed reflections the way I want my art to look. The ones I’d found prior didn’t feel right- I didn’t want to over blend and lose too much texture and color intensity, but the techniques I’ve seen used were just a bit too choppy and rough for the feel of the smooth water, for my taste. Your style of painting is especially helpful with how intentional and contemplative you are when making your marks (with the little loopy almost hypnotic flourish each time which makes me smile).. its just slow enough it to let me process and follow along with your thought process without pausing or rewinding a million times.
    I also love the way you make pastel behave as paint on a paintbrush with your broader heavier strokes and yet still keep just the right amount pastel texture that an oil painting can’t really achieve. It’s the best of both worlds and an effect I’ve long wanted in my art. Now whether or not I can achieve my own interpretation of this technique remains to be seen, but I feel more confident about my chances with at least a roadmap and visualization. Ive subscribed- Thank you!

      Hey thanks for the kind remarks, and I hope you gain new techniques and approaches through these videos! Reflections are very fun to paint. Pastel is a real joy to work with in a painterly way, keep going!

    I love this! Simply beautiful scene, masterfully painted. Well done. I have used these boards before and found that the black 'eeks' out from behind the lighter values in particular which require re-working layers and values of pastel. I noticed this was happening during the vid as well. Thanks again for another great and inspiring lesson Alain.

    Alain, I love watching your hand orchestrate a symphony of color.Two questions from my old college days. I was told NEVER in a composition to stop your viewer from coming into your painting. So, my question concerns the layer of dark on the left edge in the water. I was not hindered necessarily from coming into the lake just I hesitated. Why did you not break that up more? Then the same for the large bright green in the upper left? I guess because it was so bright it just kept me looking at it. I wanted you to break that up as well. I know only a little but it does not hurt to ask your thought process and if this is what I believe you did, and that was to go back and do another one not in front of hundreds and do it slightly different. You are brilliant and you are so generous and patient with all of us here challenging you and you us. Thank you for this hard work.

    • @AlainPicard
      @AlainPicard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Chawol, thank you for your comments and questions. In this painting, I really enjoy the strong graphic shapes that build a striking composition. Design functions on any number of precepts depending on your goal. Consider a Rothko painting of shapes, it's beautiful, but only color fields compose it. Yet I love them so. Regarding this painting. I love the larger interlocking triangular pattern created. The painting sold very fast, so you can't argue with that! With your own compositions, I encourage you to create the version of my painting you wish that I had made. That will likely help you work out your own sense of taste and desire. We are each unique. I absolutely love my chromatic green accents in this painting, they are intended to capture the viewers attention with surprise and delight. All the best to you!

    I think the genius of this tutorial and your whole way of teaching is in the process. YOU HAVE ONE... :-) It's so difficult to learn as a beginner from a teacher that kind of scribble scrabbles around on the paper. I know that once you are experienced that is part of how an artist works, but when you are starting out this type of teaching is perfect. There is a plan, a process I can follow and emulate and reasoning behind what you are doing that makes sense to a beginner. I really loved this tutorial in particular because I think it was simple and paced well. Great teacher and another great workout!! :-) You need to start an art workout studio... I would be so fit!!

    Loved watching this video. Your skill is wonderful. I have ordered my first set of soft pastels (after watching your recommendation video I've gone for half sticks of Sennelier) Do I need some hard pastels too or can these wait? I can't wait to try some of the techniques you show so beautifully.

    Delicious! Everything I want to say has already been said. Thank you for your inspiration, Alain, and for clearly demonstrating the power of shapes. I, too, would like to know what you are using for your sketches.
