I find myself coming back over and over again to this video. The negative values, the lessons about color harmony and the loose and expressive marks summarize the Picard style perfectly in one lesson.
Hey David, thanks for your kind comments! That's interesting, I guess my painterly approach gets captured well in this demo, really glad to hear it helps. I appreciate you, David, and your hard work to improve your paintings! You're doing great, keep going friend
Gosh I went back and watched a few older videos and a couple where I had not even left a comment! I realize your showing a more professional view to your viewers. The full black background and set-up area looks clean and sharp. However, I miss the old easel and roll of paper towels! I thought it gave good insight to how you worked, perhaps you no longer use paper towels? I still find you so measured and your mark making is exquisite. You create a pear and the impressionistic viewpoint is all we could ever ask for!! I realize you can only offer so much for free and you must continue to create revenue for your livelihood. I know those who were able to take advantage of your newest class will be better for the opportunity to work with you. I hope to see more of your demonstrations like this in the future. Please continue to grow and pass along your wisdom as best as you can. Thank you for allowing us to tag along your journey. I was so sure you were going to go a whole painting without rubbing, Ahh but towards the end you did! Thanks for that! I look forward to watching your future offerings and hope you and your family have a wonderful time.
Wow, that cool gray just simply causes the pear to jump forward! Such a joy to watch you paint, just like a conductor orchestrating a moving work of art. Thank you learned a lot cool and warm temperatures enhancing contrast. Be Well, thank you!
I very much enjoyed the demo. The pear took on so much character. We have all these lovely pastel colors. Great to utilize them on a simple pear! Thanks so much for sharing your demos with us.
I am just starting with pastels (been focused on oils) but I am going to start imitating Alain's hand motions as he stabs at the paper and then pulls back like he's fencing and his pastel is the sword.
I loved it without background music, as I can listen with my favourite classical tracks as backing music...Love your painting style, so decisive, deliberate, and well considered, yet painterly...this is what I aspire to create. Best instruction video series out there IMO.
I really appreciate your clear explanation of every aspect of painting with pastels. All your details are so very helpful to me as I am still in the beginning stages of painting with pastels. I am so glad to be a member of your Painterly Pastel group.
Alain, Have you ever discussed painting on a tabletop, small easel, or standing easel? I love how you paint with your whole arm and shoulder. When I follow your outstanding tutorials, I mimic you, like a musical conductor! Many thanks to you for sharing.
WOW!! I have never worked with pastels but this has turned me on They can make such a beautiful lively effect....it reminds me of stained glass at times. Just beautiful...it shimmers
Hi Alain! Your pear painting is stunning. Your strong shadows make for a convincing sense of form. I love the dark violet underpainting you started with. I have never tried this color for an underpainting- I typically use yellow ochre. I am inspired to try a dark violet. Your work is so gestural, bold, and painterly. Beautifully painted and wonderfully narrated.
Hi Dena, you just made me feel like a million bucks! Thanks for that. And I hope you have a wonderful time creating your violet underpainting! Put some of that yellow ochre on top and that would be very beautiful!
Loved the addition of the violets to the background toward the end of the video. It really made that pear POP forward.....Now I need to head to the grocery store and get a bag of pears!!!!!
I've painted an apple and a pear on your tutorials but I used oil pastels. They look different from yours but also painterly so I like the result. I'm going to try your landscapes tutorials. So far your style and explanations are the best for me. Thanks a lot!
Lovely color choices! I wouldn’t have thought of Salmon Pink, but it really popped beautifully on the dull purple. I can’t wait to get my pastels so I can draw again. Thank you for your videos, they’re very informative! :)
You are very welcome, Erika. I love the surprising qualities of color accents! It never ceases to amaze when a color brings the whole painting to a new level. I wish you all the best!
Alain, my head is spinning I am not sure what to say. I know the algorithm is driven by likes and comments, so I feel that I must leave some comment, but I will have to return for a more thoughtful one. I hope everyone gets to view this video! Very well worth the time to watch your process!
awesome work always at first saying to my self whats going on stroke here and another there always jump up to the final lol and back to start again ur style is cool
Again another amazing rendition; I freaked when I saw your choice of deep purple underpainting. I can't imagine how you saw that but it all worked out. Was there a hint of purple in the pear, anywhere, that led you to that underpainting? Or is it just a "feel" - that is a gift that's not easy to pass on. Thanks again for another inspiring video.
Very funny, yet true. I must confess I have thrown pastel pencils in the early days, in a state of despair. I've learned how to manage my frustration better now thankfully!!!
Sir what kind paint is that purple thing you put as base on the board? Is that acrylic paint? Thanks in advance. i really enjoy your videos and I really learned a lot. monie here from manila philippines.

Really enjoyed this ~ sometimes I think we all tend to forget to have FUN whilst we learn & paint .
You are so right, and we need to remind each other to keep making it fun!

I am a big fan of painting standing so marks are made from the shoulder, Karlyn, but you can do it sitting, it just takes discipline. All the best!
Thank you Alain!!!! That was soooo inspiring !
You are so very kind, you are welcome!
Another great lesson. Thank you for sharing.
You're very welcome vduron1! Glad you enjoyed.
Loved the colours, Alain. Jane/Oxford

Yay! A juicy sweet pear! You really surprised me, Alain! Thanks so much for this!
I love your videos! You teaching here is very apt for beginners like me, although i purchased oil pastels…It is amazing how you transform the colors !
Thanks so much for enjoying!
Thank you Alain. I am new to pastel, but would like to put color on my charcoal portraits.

Was you under painting done in pastel with an alcohol wash? This is gorgeous!
Yeah I feel like flinging the pastels at the board too most days!😂
:-D
