    Honestly, music like this, with clean vocals, just does not work. What I love about CoB and other melodic death metal bands is the sheer virtuosity of the guitar work, the amazing harmonies and melodies and the intensity of the music.

    The vocals are definitely startling. And I get why a lot of people don't like them. But that's HIM. it's real. Alot of pain that i deeply connect with contained in those lyrics. If anyone else sang them, i think they'd come of as incredibly cheesy. He probably hates his voice too.
    He is the band. Those songs are his. He is the complete package. The riffs, the lyrics, the solos are all Alexi. It's all him. You take the picture. And some of its ugly. That's who he IS

    I'm from Finland just like CoB and all their members are, which is why I've listened to their music since I was a little kid, and I've seen them live a couple times. They are one of my favorite bands among Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera and many more.
    I've never been a huge fan of this kind of vocals, but as I've listened to them so much I've grown used to it, I still prefer hearing Bruce or Ozzy sing, for example. For me the thing about CoB is their riffs and melodies, they are extremely talented in that category, especially in their first three albums, from which both of the songs you've reacted to are.
    If I'd get to suggest a song from them, it'd be #CoB Downfall, studio version or live in Stockholm in 2006 from the live album "Chaos ridden years", by far their best performance ever.

    I stumbled upon this late, but as to the final question posed, I'd like to share my thoughts.
    Alexi Laiho was the lead singer and lead guitarist, and really the driving force behind Children of Bodom. He stepped into the role of vocals reluctantly initially because no one else would. The thing is though, Alexi poured all of his negative energy emotion out through his lyrics and music. If you want interviews with him he was such a sweet, caring guy, always smiling and laughing. And I think that's why. He obviously had his demons, but I believe he came to terms with them by creating the music he did. As you can hear, he was an exceptionally gifted, dare I even say virtuoso guitarist.
    For me, metal music is much the same thing. I listen to it to unwind, and to be honest I often crave the darker, heavier and meaner stuff. It soothes the soul so that I can try to be a more positive person on the outside. But above all for me is the music, in particular the guitar. Was Alexi the best vocalist? Nope. Was he even a great vocalist? Nope. But he had so much passion, energy and talent to express through and for his music that I don't even care, honestly. This is especially true if you ever had the pleasure to catch Children of Bodom live. But even just going back and watching live videos of them, it's evident in all of them.
    His passing crushed me recently. I felt like a big part of my younger self died with him. His death comes right off the back of my own father passing away in November of last year (2020). Immersing myself in his music again helped me so much in regards to dealing with that grief. And then he passed away himself and it left me gutted. The guy was a legend. I miss him dearly and hate that I'll never get to catch them live every again. I hope this helps to answer the question of why some of us appreciate his music as much as we do. Thanks for uploading this back when you did!

    Wow...you fit the mold of a boomer dad-metal fan. Metal has evolved. Also, Slipknot & Cradle of Filth are nowhere near Children of Bodom's level. R.I.P. (Rest in Power) Alexei Laiho...the world will miss you.

    @dicksmashmcironcock7362 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for choosing this guys! Appreciate the honesty. I agree the the vocals arent great but Vocals are a secondary type of thing for me anyway. The music is more important. Please don't write off Children of Bodom because of it. I like to think the vocals for this band act as an alternate line of percussion. As long as you're not trying to find a deep poetic meaning behind it you can think of it as a background gimmick thats second to the actual band's performance.

    Bodom's lyrics, especially on the early albums are very dark and depressing. The Writer of those lyrics and the writer of the music, Alexi Laiho, fought with depression and a mild psychosis during his youth. He also tried to kill himself in Stockholm around the time these albums were made, but was saved by his bandmates. I guess that lyrics like these were a sort of outlet for him, a way to try and eject all that inner pain.

    So some background on cobhc if you haven't already done some research. Their lead guitarist Alexi is also the vocalist. From what i remember from an interview, upon the formation of the band nobody wanted to do vocals so he was kinda pushed into the role. That and being a Finnish band they're from the land of black/death metal so that's why the vocals are the way they are.

    Alexi was one of those vocalists that i hated too... at first... then after listening... really listening.. he grew on you..
    This was children of bodom.. it was how they did it.. EVERYONE tried to get alexi to sing.. he said no.. fuck that.. this is what I WANT.. this is what he wanted the music to sound like.. after it grows on you.. you actually can understand and come to prefer he did it that way..
    I was the same way.. i LOVED the music and HATED the vocals.. and then after a few months.. i fell in love with the band.. childen of bodom is what youd call an acquired taste..
    Their music is classical melodic death metal.. and without those kinds of vocals.. they would not be that.. RIP Alexi.. the fact he played those savage ass riffs AND sang at the same time.. dude was a fucking legend.. labeled a virtuoso at age 25 by guitar world magazine with the likes of steve vai, Joe satriani... kid was a legend..

    I'm not the biggest CoB fan, but my brother used to listen to them a lot and as far as I can remember the singing was pretty much the same on all songs. By the way it's the lead guitarist that sings as well. In my opinion the singing isn't very different from other harsh vocalists that you have liked (or accepted). Maybe this is more on the snarlier (if that's a word) side? In the end it comes down to personal preference I think, it's the same with clean vocals. There are for example several people that think that Bruce Dickinson sings way to high to be listenable, but to me, and clearly you as well, it's perfect.

    COB was a band that I listened all the time throughout my high school years, but overtime I felt the same way as Rich. I love the instrumentals but the presentation of the lyrical content I don't like very much. Not saying it's bad, it just wasn't for me anymore. I think growling and screaming can be used as an important tool in songs, but here it's just used as the default singing style. It's impressive that Alexi can do that though, keeping up that kind of singing is hard to do properly without ruining your voice. Or at least it's harder than it looks.
    One of my personal favourites from COB would probably be Touch Like Angel of Death from the Tokyo Warhearts show in 1999. The song is a little different than the studio version, but awesome.

    I've been listening to Bodom since the first album came out (actually, kind of checked out after the first three). Alexi's vocals are definitely not the main thing for which the band is known. His vocals sound kind of like "half assed" black metal vocals, definitely not very dark. But it works ok for them. To me, Bodom was kind of like a gateway drug to the heavier stuff out there. I also find a lot of humor in Bodom's material . Who can really take that seriously the overarching reaper theme etc. That's hilarious. And very good.

They don't offer muchmusical variety, but all their albums have their own disrinctive sound even though it doesn't deviate from their style all too much.

    I mean, of course people have their own tastes in music and we have our own preferences. But there is a big difference just not liking some band or then on the other hand saying that one doesn`t like a certain METAL song because its so dark and angry, wtf? I would never have thought that someone can think that way, that was really confusing and shocking to hear. Or maybe I was just confusing things, I got the impression from the start of the video that you are some "metalheads", but maybe I understood it wrong.

      It’s like food. Some food we really like. Other food is an absolute no because it hits a person very badly in any number of levels. Do you have any food that is absolute no? Or a food or beverage that you tried once but don’t ever want again or at least would pick anything over that particular food/drink if given the choice?
      Same thing.
      Thoughts?

      @@Kel.N.RichReactions It`s not the same thing with food.
      Essential core things of metal includes brutal, heavy and yes dark and angry stuff too. They just belong to metal like nose to the head. The metal genre has those things build inside of it.
      I understand if some hard rock listener for example doesn`t like those elements and prefers to listen hard rock instead of metal due to that.
      LIke, there are quite many metal bands that I don`t like due to my personal preferences, but they definitely has those elements included what metal genre has in it, even though I don`t like them.
      I mean there is no point to judge a metal song for including those elements that are indeed very essential part of metal.

    Dark, mean and angry. Well, that`s what metal is. Of course, there are other elements in metal. But if you can`t handle something that is dark, mean and angry emotionally, how can you be metal listener at all?. Just wondering. We all have some dark sides inside of us don`t we.

    Totally with you dude, so many bands these days have absolute appalling vocals that ruin otherwise fantastic music - the music here was great, awesome infact, but it's hard to listen to with those vocals - imagine a Dio, Dickinson or Halford singing over this, it would be awesome 🤘

    • @Kartellinen
      @Kartellinen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would be awful. Dio etc. is not exactly metal, is too soft to be metal

    • @jimharris367
      @jimharris367 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Kartellinen utter rubbish, Metal is a much broarder church than you seem to imagine, and it doesn't have to be as Heavy as possible to be Metal - infact the bands that were first categorised as Metal have nothing much in common with the shouty extreme Metal scene of today - so maybe it's those bands that aren't Metal while Dio and the like most definitely are. To use an analogy, would you say that a Model T Ford is not a car because today's car's are different and faster? No. And just to give context, I'm 57 and have been listening to Metal since 1974, and played in numerous Metal bands, so I know my shit.

    • @Kartellinen
      @Kartellinen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Metal is heavy mostly. Early Metallica, Megadeth and Sepultura for example are considered metal classics nowadays. Those earlier bands were doing something different that earlier generations (like Beatles etc.) sure. But when Metallica etc. emerged, that was a new era and the actual metal started.
      And speaking of age, I am not much younger than you, almost fifty, And have been listening to metal from very young age, since I was something like thirteen years old. I did listen some lighter stuff before that, but my actual metal journey really started when I found out about Metallica at the time.

    • @jimharris367
      @jimharris367 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Kartellinen Dude, Metal did not start with Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura etc - have you heard of Black Sabbath? Have you heard of Judas Priest? Iron Maiden, Saxon - so so many Metal bands that pre date the birth of Thrash, which is what you seem to see as the birth of Metal!

    • @Kartellinen
      @Kartellinen 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jimharris367 I have heard those. I listened quite much for example Iron Maiden. It was before me founding Metallica. But it was like "pre metal". Then developed metal metal.

    This is probably the worst entry song to listen to when it comes to Bodom. But frankly you guys should never listen to COB ever again if you can’t appreciate the sound musically and vocally when it is both visionized by Alexi himself for most of the songs. He was both the songwriter and lyrics writer on most of the songs and this is the way he wanted it to sound.
