- Poptropica is one of my favorite flash games of all time. I spent way too much of my childhood playing through many of the original island, so obviously, I've got to speedrun it. However, it turns out that this speedrun might be a bit stranger than you think

I will never forget the absolute terror I felt when I heard that old lady speak behind me on Ghost Story island. As an 8 year old, I was not prepared to be jump-scared with that voice acting. I didn’t even know voice acting was possible in Poptropica, and, at first, I thought that the voice had come from inside the room I was playing in. Freaky stuff! But yeah, Poptropica was my childhood. It was the game that made me love video games.

That single moment from Ghost Story was actually one of the best jump scares I have ever come across

The real thing that made it scary wasn't that you weren't expecting voice acting. That island was made in the original Poptropica engine where they didn't have sound for almost anything. I think Ghost Story was one of the first islands to actually use a few audio files. So you're playing this completely silent game, and on the off chance that your sound is on, you suddenly get this voice out of absolutely nowhere. Pretty brilliant.

I remember playing the crap out of this game and gathering a bunch of cool cosmetics as I went to the point where whenever I went into a community area suddenly a bunch of people would start to look like me. Basically the peak of my life.

@@glasses6524 You might be thinking of the Timmy Failure Island. But to answer your question, Jeff only made Poptropica and the Wimpy Kid books. He got permission to use the characters from Big Nate, Peanuts and Timmy Failure from their owners/respective owners.
Poptropica was my favorite game growing up. It made me so sad when flash died and all the old islands were shut down.

hey fun fact there's a development team working to make the game playable without flash, and there's already a handful of islands back! Play the app version though, not the web version

Also, if you don't wanna play on mobile (I don't like how they shifted their focus to mobile) or can't wait for them to port every original island to Haxe, there's a curation in the Flashpoint archive that contains all the original islands made up until like Back Lot and Night Watch. (The first "beta" islands like Monster Carnival and Virus Hunter aren't there unfortunately.)
i know right! i’ve been searching for so long for a way to bring it back or access the old islands plus no new islands are coming out for the new poptropica.

One time in elementary school I managed to complete the entirety of time turner island in one computer lab session and my peers thought I was a god. So basically I'm a speedrun prodigy.

Check out Flashpoint, some madlad got the entire alpha build working in there so you can play every island made up until like Back Lot

@@J242D This happen when adobe flash player died on december 31 2020, which most of the poprtopica islands ran on. I believe there are fans who recreated the old worlds, and that they have a site somewhere on the internet (not sure where), but that's only if you trust it tho. (not saying its dangerous or anything, but I just don't trust unofficial sources.) I heard that poprtopica plans to bring the worlds back soon, but that hasn't happened in almost 2 years now.

24 Carrot was the first island I ever beat as a kid and I felt so proud of myself, I'd love to see a speedrun of that island!

I remember playing when there were only 3 islands. I have to say that the one where you time travel and the cryptids one were my favorite. I stopped playing around the time that one of the space ones came out. Maybe there was one with hercules is the last one i beat.

Oh my God, I think about this game frequently. I had so much fun with this one. Learned what a Chupacabra is with the urban legend area and the superhero place was just my vibing area, flying around havin fun with superpowers... Man... Good times.
That area was so cool. Do u remember fighting the super villains ? I never could get past the subway villain and was stuck on there :/ so I forgot my username / password sadly

He's probably playing on Flashpoint Infinity. Go look it up, you can play a lot of the original islands there.

Played Poptropica in computer class over a decade ago. Had no idea the game could be beat. Lots of lazy afternoons playing this game waiting for the school day to be over. What a nostalgia trip!

I think Counterfeit was the only island that did that. But yeah, it was a pretty mind-blowing trick.

Edit: About a Half Dozen of the original game have returned and as far as I can tell nothing’s changed.
I've seen reddit posts finding ways around this. So, you know, if you look, there's options, I guess.

@@leeeeeeeeeeeeeviathan the easiest way i have found to play the full game is flashpoint, a flash game saving thing. Though the way to install is a bit manual but mostly easy. It's a bit buggy and some islands don't work but you can play the fist three 'seasons' of islands
I think the"renovation" is converting them from flash to whatever people are using instead (HTML5?)
Dude, I used to play the crap out of this game during the shutdown. I beat all of the islands now. This game had such unique stories and art. It was awesome.

I would love to see a harder island speedrun. Skullduggery would be cool, steamworks, and AstroKnights are Awesome. Time Tangled and Nabooti might be shorter and more fun to learn and run.

Astro Knights was one of the first really big/long ones (along with maybe Nabooti). I remember when I started playing there were nine islands and Astro Knights was the newest one. I was in fourth grade and I saw someone inside the volcano and it was so cool that I just HAD to figure out how to play it. I don't think I actually beat that island until years later...
The last island I played was I believe Zomberry before other things got in the way. I lowkey also loved watching the fashion shows and fanmade music videos people put on TH-cam in Poptropica's peak.
I’d love to see a speed run of Escape From Pelican Rock or Mythology Island if you are able to play those!

Ok but can somebody tell me how tf you get Hercules to help you? I literally found the Hydra myself, faced it off and manages to get past it, but you can't get the scale unless Hercules is helping you I guess? And no matter what I said to him or offered him, he just didn't want to help me.
@@applebee28 once you defeat the hydra just go near it and click on it to get the scale. For hercules to help you... You have to answer Aphrodite's quiz to get her mirror.

SPEEDRUN SKULLDUGGERY ISLAND! That islands whole trading and ship gimmick was super fun. Fighting sea monsters and gathering their loot, blasting tiny ships over and over.
Man this game was so good.
Used to play this game all the time as a kid at the computer lab. Best part? It was online, you could see other people in the common spaces, talk, show off cosmetics, etc. It felt so incredible to be connected to everyone like that

@@wellwell3544 I like to think that the early islands having no audio was part of the lore, like that's why the guards couldn't hear you unless you made enough noise to have visual sound effects on the screen

Just a side note, I'm pretty sure you can skip dialogue bubbles by pressing a certain key. That being said, it's been years since I've played Poptropica so they might've removed that feature.

Wow, what a cool concept for a game! _Loads_ of nods to real-life art thefts in there... the French lady's tour of the catacombs of Paris @ 1:32 (location of the world's most famous stolen art work - the_'Mona Lisa')..._ many paintings shown (including Munch's _'Scream')_ have been stolen in real life. In fact, some of the "greatest" paintings hidden behind the wall @ 10:32 are part of the _biggest still-unsolved art crime_ - the Gardner Museum heist (Boston, 1990). The painting of the boat @ 10:36 is the most valuable piece stolen, a Rembrandt worth hundreds of millions of dollars _missing to this very day._ Even the ways you investigate frauds by checking signatures & working out the chemical composition of paints is correct, and there's a heap of little Easter eggs in the way various paintings are stolen & hidden (like the attic full of artworks & paintings hung in the wrong places)... just brilliant! 👌

I can still remember getting the DS game of Popyropica and never getting to even go through the main story because it just didn’t have something in a fountain you needed to get to continue.

This game used to be 70% of the conversations during recess in the last years of Elementary School, lol. "Oh you beat that one? How? Oh you've gotta talk to that guy? Oh okay! Well I beat this one first, here's my advice..."
The space one and the fantasy ones were my favorite islands
Poptropica taught me the basics of mercantilism, and by extension math. Specifically the old Skullduggery Island. I spent minutes figuring out how trade worked and how to buy low and sell high, concluding in a perfect clockwise route.
