That's really a terror of a attach, literally unplayable & not easy to handle. Immense delight to see the WI battering the Aussies in their own backyard, was a pleasure to see ribs & shins of the Aussie batsmen being literally damaged. Salute the WI team 👌👌👌
This is a great clip. It shows the unremitting pressure these great West indian bowlers exerted all the time. It is very much how I remembered watching this at the time. Constant pressure. There was never any easy runs to be made. I am also glad that you showed Andy Roberts. With the passage of time he is very unappreciated, however I thought he was the leader of the attack in the late 70's early 80's. Having just watched the Ashes I have no doubt that both sides would have been shredded by this attack. For me this attack remains the benchmark whereby I judge all other teams and particularly batsmen. Thanks very much for posting.
Sunil Gavaskar scored 2749 runs against the west Indies from 1971 to 1987..how many batsmen can match that....no doubt he was the greatest of his time...

Regardless of who batted against this pace attack, every one of them is a hero because all they had was a coconut shell-like helmet and none of the sophisticated protective gear like what we have today.
In may opinion if the English or Australians had a bowling attack like that they wouldn't have contrived too changed the rules on bouncers too contain it... Just a thought
Exactly. The quartet was established after the 1976 tour of Australia. Gavaskar made 6 centuries against West Indies from then until his retirement in the mid 1980s. He was a great batsman but let’s stick to the facts
Gavaskar' first four centuries in West Indies were scored against medium pacers and Sobers. It was only in 1976 he hit two tons against Holding and Roberts. By then Holding was still evolving into a full fledged pacer. Again in 1978-79 he made a few centuries against debutant Marshall and the likes of Holder. In 1983 his record against the famed pace battery was not at all impressive. Back home in 1983 he did perform well with the highest ever score by an Indian in his kitty. But then it was on home grown pitches. However all this is not to deny the greatness of Gavaskar. But simply harping on the fact that he scored 13 centuries against the Windies without analysis hardly makes any sense.
No Most centuries of Gavaskar were when these deadly quartet was absent. Packer etc. even in 1984 he made inconsequential centuries on dead pitches. His real good knock was 90 against Wi in Ahmedabad on lively pitch. Infact his 236 in Chennai was rain affected inconsequential one inning fully rain spoilt match at position 4 batting order.
The West Indian batters were counting their lucky stars for not having to face their own attack or their batting averages would have been chopped by 5 to 10 runs. Even Viv was regularly brushed aside when facing Holding or Clarke in county cricket and was uncomfortable facing the latter without a helmet .
Viv had hardly a point to prove in FC against anyone of them.. In any case Viv was too modest even annoyingly at times; Clarke was fearsome but nowhere near to greats Viv faced like Lillee, Akram, Khan, Hadlee, Willis, Snow etc..
Just sheer relentless pace, makes lillee and thommo look like ordinary, West indies dished out what was dished out to them in 1975 in australia, they would have still beaten that australian side by a country mile.
Gavasker never faced the fearsome bowling of Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft all at the same time never ever. Check out the record and he has been very lucky to avoid the troublesome original foursome. He has taken 13 centuries of the weaker combination, but mind it he was a great batsman no doubt at all.
Botham later commented that Roberts varied his attack with a very fast bouncer, which made him virtually unplayable. Cricket though is a team game, and with the others made this Windies side of legends
Pity the batsmen, there is absolutely no breathing space or respite. Every over they had four great bowlers continuously coming at you. It's a wonder they got 200+
@@jonrichardson8461 a competition held, timer apparently working properly, Thompson could not bowel even 148kph, a competition in which the objective was to determine each bowler speed, yet we have people saying he boweled at 160, ha

Very best bowling from west indies that I have seen

Andy Roberts was very much the leader of the pack in the 70's. Holding said that he learned a lot about fast bowling from Andy Roberts.

Yes, Sunil gavaskar❤❤❤❤❤
Legend. Among top 3 best ever
That too with just a hat
Part of that happened when Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft were part of Packer cricket and so were banned from international cricket.
Sunny Gavaskar - the most celebrated loser in cricket history.
If i ever faced these guys i would walk for every lbw appeal. It would be painful next few deliveries if the empires says not out. Walk man walk.

Great bowling by Roberts in the first innings
Well said Richard Smith: Good Analysis: The Fastest pace batteries of WI were almost graveyard of opposite batting line up...Every ball is deadly 😳
Yes indeed

no he did not! in fact he did not fare so well after 1976 when the pace quartet arrived

but if they are fiery then none of them took 5 wickets in test, Out of all the fast bowlers only Lillee and Hadlee took 5 wickets per test match
these men were known to bring death to those in front of them. they should consider themselves lucky they walked off the pitch.
It was easy ,they mostly focused on bouncers and pace.i think today's batsman can play them very easily.
In 1979 there was a competition to determine who is the fastest, Jeff Thompson bowled the fastest at 147kph, bowlers now are faster
Nonsense. He was timed at 160 once, and faster than anyone today.
