- The Opening Batsman Who Defined West Indies’ Dominance: Gordon Greenidge.
Gordon Greenidge was pure class and power-a legend of West Indies cricket. From crushing bowlers with ease to chasing 344 in a day with an epic 214*, he redefined opening batting. A true icon of the game’s golden era!

Hey Cricket Lovers🏏, who is the greatest opening batsman of all time?
Hobbs and Hutton would open in my best XI.
Gavaskar
@@CricketStories007 the little master.
The great Michael Holding said if it wasn't for Vivian Richards alot more people would be talking about Gordon Grenage and that is so very true.
@@LanceReid-b3y exactly
There have been several cricketers but he is the only one that I saw who was so technically correct. Not only a great cricketer but a true gentleman.
exactly
Greenidge was the silent partner in the background. Everyone spoke about Viv but Greenidge was always just as good as Viv. That double century against the Aussies in his final match was a masterclass
exactly, he was one of the best
Greenidge was a remarkable batsman. Well balanced and a lot of power and timing. I think he was just as good as Richard.
Back then West Indies names were something different from others, like a poetry.
Gordon Greenidge
Richie Richardson
Vivian vichards
@@t3knyn I would say that Chris Gayle is the greatest opening batsman for the wi team, without a doubt. He is the only wi batsman in the history of cricket away, from Swag of India 🇮🇳 to scored 2 triple hundreds in test cricket. Which is the highest level of the games, so all of you is talking about Greenidge and Haynes combinations. Also Barry Richard's from south Africa is the least from the pack, because he has no test centuries. Once a player or player does not played test cricket, he shouldn't be mentioned in modern games cricket. County cricket is in England is not a international sports, it is a domestic competition and it shouldn't put in the same category as test cricket. If you are going to talk about good test batsman, who scored over 7,000 runs to be classified as great batsmen. You got to talk about Graham Gooch, Geoff Boycott, John Headwrich,Chris Gayle, Sewag,Greenidge and Haynes, Sunil Gavakar, and the list goes on. You cannot denied any batsmen who scored more than 2 triple hundreds in test cricket not great batsman and. What is so ironic about the whole scenario, it is only 4 batsmen in the history of test cricket. To scored 2 triple hundreds and some people only rated only 2 of them, it is only Donald Bradman also Lara is rated, and Gayle also Sewag is not rated. The commentators is always saying that Gayle has no footworks, that is to show that they are very stupid and biased. How can a batsman doesn't have any footworks and, can scoring 2 triple hundreds. So how comes the other batsmen them having all the footworks and, they cannot scored one. So that is to tell you, that those commentators does not know nothing about the arts of batting techniques. If a batsman is not getting to the pitch of the ball, he cannot scored runs. So when you listened to some of those comments, then you know that some people is novice to the games. Every batsmen would love to scored a hundreds, double and triple in test cricket to show how great they are. Now adays with these bloggers either that they are looking subscribers, that is why they posted these biased articles. Because the leading batsmen and bowlers is not rated, as the one with the lowest amount of wickets or runs. How can you going backwards, let us use these players as an example. Tendulkar is the highest runs scorer in test and odi cricket, how can you compare Lara,or Bradman, Viv Richard's with him. Unless you are very crazy, you should put the players them in different categories of line up. Because in the all times leading wickets takers and runs scorers, certain players in not in the top 10th or 20 also 50.So if them cannot make the all times list as the greatest batsmen and bowlers, how are you going to equating him with those players. It be very ridiculous, I would like to know under what circumstances. Some people is just biased against certain players, you don't haveto liked a player not to give him is accolades. That is the whole bottom line of the whole scenario, don't let biasness take over your performances ok.
He Scored 226 in his 2nd Last match
Loved that square drive of his, off the backfoot. Very aggressive batsman.
Yeah!
G.Greenidge also formed an exceptional opening partnership with Barry Richards for Hampshire in English county cricket.
He was considered most dangerous when walking out in a limp as then he dealt mainly in boundaries, as mentioned by Imran Khan.
Excellent video on Greenidge..he didn't get his due recognition because he was part of team which had Viv Richards..
yeah
The person talking. Is doing a great job.love the way,he puts stuff.like the other reporters, they really don't do it like him, keep up the good work. U got a fan.😊
Thank you so much 😀
You have done a very beautiful job, I didn't know Gordon Greenidge was that great. If Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest batsman and Greenidge was the greatest opening batsman of all times, it means that Barbados place in cricket would never be forgotten
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Gordon Greenidge was truly a legendary opener.
Gordon Greenidge may not have the highest career average but I dont think anyone faced better bowling so consistently. If he wasnt facing Lillee or Thomson he was facing Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Hadlee , Botham, Willis or Kapil Dev, as well as the best spinners, and the South Africans pace bowlers during the Packer matches. The only weak teams in those days were Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, Greenidge never played a single Test against either. He did struggle a bit in Pakistan, perhaps the only weak point of his career.
He actually forced a change in the laws of cricket, on one occasion he was called away to a family emergency and unable to resume his innings from the previous evening. Under the rules at the time his innings could only be given as retired out. A couple of years later the ICC amended the rules to allow the scorecard to be amended to retired not out for such extraordinary circumstances.
He was also part of the most bizarre name coincidence in cricket, when he made his debut the man he replaced was Geoff Greenidge. When there was a players strike during the Packer era he was briefly replaced by Alvin Greenidge. None of these guys were related in any way, Geoff Greenidge was actually a white guy!. No other players named Greenidge ever represented West Indies before or since yet all 3 were opening batsmen.
He was one of the best!
Just facing Hadlee doesn't mean that NZ was a strong bowling side in those times lol.
An attack is made up of 2 great ones with 1-2 above average guys for support(golden WI attack, Aus in 90s till 07 and now since 2018, SA late 90s till 2018, Eng after 2010 and NZ and Ind right now).
Just having Kapil from one end who was never a "great bowler" himself and then packing 2-3 average guys isn't about strong bowling line up.
Ind,SL,NZ and even Eng to higher extent were either poor or average bowling attacks in those times and even Thommo outside was as shit as they come.
The only proper line up in those times was WI followed by Pak when Qadir peaked along with Imran and then Wasim,Waqar came later.
Also, Sunny faced a much more lethal line up in comparison as he had to face all the best bowlers of his time(Marshall,Holding,Roberts,Garner and etc).
And overall in cricket's history Sachin is the one who has faced much better lineup and much more consistenly.
Aus had Glenn+Warnie+Jason+Lee and then Stuart,Johnson,Lyon later on.
SA had Donald+Pollack earlier and then came Steyn+Morne+Philander.
Pak had Wasim+Waqar+Shoeb and their best spinners later on too.
Eng in 90s and early 00 was mid but then Jimmy+Broad made that attack great too.
And on top of that Sachin also faced Ambrose+Walsh till 00 from WI.
SL had it's best bowlers in Murli+Vaas in those times as well and only NZ was down and out in comparison.
So yeah Sachin,Sunny,Lara,Dravid etc faced a much world renowned attack than Gordon and you can literally see it in their numbers as well. Gordon never averaged good in any country that had a good bowling attack in his time.
Kapil dev is definitely is good bowler,he may not fast, but brilliant swing bowler, his swing thr ball ik air both ways,
Most of the top world class bowler not having capable swing in air both ways.
So kapil is good great bowler.@@akshaybhatt3378
@@Jasper9000-wd5sm And especially being that he was an opening batsman he was facing all these different types of bowlers especially the fast bowlers who were fresh and full of energy to start out the game. Can you imagine facing these kind of bowlers!?
I don't agree (respectfully) 🙂 with what you're saying for the most part about the caliber of the bowlers he faced. Plz check your facts and analyze them properly before posting my friend.
Loved watching him in the 80's destroyed England 5-0 in England. One of the greatest Opening Batsman
Yeah
I first watched him when WI were touring Pak in 1986...Yes, he would muscle the cricket ball with ferocious power and accuracy.
🔥🔥
Gordon's coil then explode style of batting was amazing
Yes
Only between 1983 and 1985 was Greenidge superior to Viv Richards. In 30 tests,Greenidge was at his peak and averaged 59.13 while Viv averaged 45.13 in the same 30 tests.Viv Richards averaged 47.57 in Australia and 55.70 in WSC Supertests .Greenidge averaged 30.97 in Australia and 35.90 in WSC Supertests.
🔥
To be fair, they all played their part in that great team. Just look at the bowlers, holding, Roberts and Garner. Batmen: Greenidge, fredricks, Haynes, Richards, Lloyd, Gomes. Basically the whole team.
Yeah
Those were the days, India will not have solutions to get rid of Greenidge. He bats bats bats on on snd on ..
yeah
His footwork was incredible.
Exactly
Superb bro,plz make a video for Desmond haynes
Soon bro
Beautiful Amazing content... Made my day🥂💥👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed it🔥
A GG century is more attractive to view than another! He did not have the concentration of Viv and Laura to go on and on at the crease but he was as technical and certainly more powerful than any of those two!
True
Gorden Greenidge is my second favourite batsman next to king Viv love that square cut
🔥
Greatest opening
🔥yeah
Greenidge was a grandmaster batsman
Yeah!
One the very greatest simply put.
Yeah!
Still remember those 9 sixes against my India
mindblowing
To me greanage and haines ar the 2 best opening batsmen in cricket 🏏
🔥yeah
Say it
In theory Greenidge and Barry Richards must be the finest opening partnership, but I do not want to compare. Grrenidge was a great batsmen and a fine sportsman, Perhaps there who combined genius and modest demeanour in the same being. @@supermaple1919
He was elegant but savage.
Yeah
Greenidge and Haynes partner ship only in 13 years
He was a partner in three great opening partnerships, Greenidge and Fredericks,, Greenidge and Haynes, and Greenidge and Barry Richards. I do not want to play the ordination game but Gordon Greenidge is on of the greatest batsmen in his or any generation
To be a truly great test cricketer you have to succeed in Australia.Greenidge averaged 30.97 in 17 tests. He even features in my side of excellent cricketers who failed in Australia: Greenidge,Gooch,Vensarkar,Root,Compton,Chanderpaul,Dhoni,Waqar Younis,Harmison,Roach,Muralitharan.
What is most strange about that fact that Australia's traditional type of bowling was perfect for his style of batting
Truly world class plàyer
The great Kapil Dev would've liked to know if you heard about the World of 1983 at Lords, the home of cricket.
India 183. Windies 140. Grennidge failed miserably. Don't forget, India was the underdog.
@@WesleyMcpherson-lu1rf And what does that prove?
AT LAST, thank you 🙏. I’ve been waiting for you to do GREENIDGE.
Can you do from the West Indies, RICHIE RICHARDSON and CARL HOOPER.
And from Australia RICKY PONTING and GREG CHAPPELL.
From England DAVID GOWER.
DILLIP VENGSARKAR and ZAHEER ABBAS.
sure bro!
Thank you 🙏, I’m basically doing my own compilation of your videos.
I’m doing my favourite West Indies team .
Then my all time favourite team.
And then I’m gonna do my all time elegant team.
Once again thank you 🙏 I love all of the videos.
Please do not cause a division, respect both men for their skills
Viv was voted batsman of the century
Yes
Before the world saw Sachin-viru or Gilly - haydos , It was all about Greenidge and haynes
Exactly
Make a video on Desmond haynes 🏏✨🌟
Sure bro, soon
Cuthbert could bat for sure. Better than Viv? Very different.
Lords must have been his favorite pitch to play on.
True
Gordon Grennidge failed miserably against Lillie and Thompson in tour of Australia in 1975/76. Richards, Fredericks, Rowe, Kallicharan, and Lloyd made centuries. My point is. Richards was by far the batsman. My opinion only!
I totally agree
Gordon Greenidge was a magnificent opening powerful batsman. Once at lords in the mid 1970s he hit a six that nearly hit me and my dad. He 😮was a great cutter of th ball. Yes he was superb but viv Richards was better. Viv could do ll those things and more. Eg hit six doing a cover drive . Hit six flicking ball over mid wicket. They were both colossal great batsmen during the west indies heyday . Great cricketing post.
🔥yeah, both were great
Can you make a video on Desmond Haynes?
Sure, will soon work on that
Greenidge & Haynes. just ridiculous how good they were. we can all name our test XI's with our favourite players... but no one dominated like they did. they were untouchable from 1976-1994. its funny when people name their best XI these days and argue over Sangakarra, Hayden, Sehwag etc as openers..... sorry. Greenidge & Haynes are almost too boring to talk about because there is no contest!! they DOMINATED the 80's. best opening pair bar none
Exactly🔥
Can you make a video about the great of Larry Gomes ?
Sure, will work on that
Gordon Greenidge Peak time were 1983---1987
These 4 Years Viv were behind of him .
1974/1982
Gordon was inconsistent .
He did Good job vs Ind 1974/75
His Next Super Series were
1976 vs Eng
1977 vs Pakistan
1980 vs Nz
His Failure Series
1976 vs Aus
1979 vs Aus
1980 vs Eng
Gordon Peak 1983/1987
1983 vs Ind
1983/1984 vs ind
1984 vs Eng
1987 vs Nz
1987 vs Ind
After 1987 Gordon golden days were over he Scored 4 centuries in test next 4 years .
🔥
Wrong..During the ..1970..80.. Gordon Greenidge..Desmond Haynes..Clive Loyd..Viv Richards.... etc were equally spoken in the same respect and breath....I dont think people of that Era had any confusion...each one of them were household names....at that time...Its only Vivian Richards had an Aura that gave him special status...The rest of the batsmen were as good as Vivian
@@manoalex6575 it was a superteam
Racism will always existed in England because it is in England it was Born , I just love to see when he Hang back and let loose love you Gordon ,
Yeah
He, as well as Haynes were the bedt opening batsmen but npt better than Viv. 👏👏🙏
true
👌👌
🔥🔥
Greenidge was a great player Richards was the greatest of the greats.
🔥
Please make a video on Kumar Sangakkara
sure
Gordon of course in his early days he was better than hanes he was second to viv Richards .sometimes I wonder why they don't never speak more about Gordon grinnedge
True
No comparison. VIv was a genius.
Yes
Man please consider who played with a helmet not who did not west.It is Viv Richards the best.Wrong comment by you.
correct
How did it matter?
Grineedge - much more Stylist and Artistic than Sir Viv.
But - But - But
Sir Viv - all time Greatest with Sir Don.
"To Choose the Greatest Batsman - Final between,
Sir Don and Sir Viv -------- Alan Border.
🔥🔥
He participated in three regular opening Partnerships, with Roy Fredericks, with Desmond Haynes for the West Indies and with Barry Richards for Hampshire., The prospect of Bowling to Fredericks and Greenidge and then to remove one of those only to watch Vivian Richards , and then Lawrence Rowe and Lloyd is the stuff nightmares. and you dismiss them and then you find yourself bowling to Holding, or Winston Davies. In my opinion the West Indies from 1973 to 1993 were the Greatest team ever to take the field better then Bradman's 1948 Side
It is a measure of that strength that they could win even when 'key players ' were injured. As well as Roberts, Holding Garner and Marshall there was Croft. and there must be very few sides that had as well as those , Harper, Hooper, King, Dujon Murray, after Sobers had retired. My life has seen the greatest age of Musicians, cricket French Rugby, Scientific Achievement, some great politicians . It is difficult the same nation that produced J.F Kennedy and George Marshall, Obama vote for Trump. It is retreat from Modernity, the flight of the lemmings from their Own mediocrity it was sold to the multitude in the guise of thought. But we have lived long enough to know better.
Please make a video on barry richards he could have been better than bradman
sure sure
Viv was d boss period
🔥yeah
Not all time 👀
then who?
Sunil Gavaskar
Nobody is an all time performer. We are humans. Prone to ups and downs.
They good but not better than viv Richard
😊
🔥🔥
Do you know that is only 2 opening batsmen in the world in test cricket to ever scored, 2 triple hundreds is Gayle and Sewag. In any circumstances those 2 opening batsmen names must be mentioned at all times greatest players. I know that you are going to have some cyber bullies out there, who is going to talk a lot of trash. Anyway I would like anyone of them to match up Gayle and Sewag records, with the rest of openers worldwide international career and. Not one of them can really matches up with their 2 triple hundreds in test cricket, and that is a very hard mountain ⛰ to climb over. If anyone of you out there can find another opening batsmen is better, than Gayle and Sewag records. You should bring it on ,or scored more international centuries like Chris Gayle or runs.
grow up
Desmond haynes was the best in odi scored 17 centuries it was kerry packer series were west indies became invincible and professional actually australia national team suffered after playing packer series a brief period from 1981 to 1987 big slump after ashes win in eng 1989 slowly they rose and from mid 90s to late 2000 they were the best
If you want to hear stupid comments comments then go to TH-cam channel, because some people is only talking trash. About Viv Richard's was batting without any helmet ⛑ throughout his career, like he is. The only batsman batting throughout his career without helmet ⛑, Sobers, Khani, Butcher, Nurse, Hunte, Headley, and list goes on. If you checked the records of the icc about the top fastest bowlers of all times, neither Greenidge or Viv Richard's and many more of. The former players them never really played against, anyone of the fastest bowlers away from Jeff Thomson and. The icc said he was ranked 5th ,so not one of them really played against. The world top 10 fastest bowlers of all times, it is not me who said so. It is the icc organization, so I know that Sunil Gavakar is a better batsman than Viv Richard's and Greenidge,he played against the wi 4 fastest bowlers for years and he batted throughout his career without a helmet ⛑. So I want you little islands guys to, stop coming on social media running off your mouths about. Viv Richard's batting throughout his career without a helmet ⛑, like he is the only batsman. That every to bat throughout his career without an helmet ⛑, it is so stupid.
