How I Restored This Wood Burning Stove PART 2 *Step by Step *DIY

  • I now have all the rust removed & it's time to prep for hi temp paint. I show what paint I use as well as my painting technique. I like this particular brand stove, having recently discovered an old advertisement from March 23, 1978 this stove was called "The chrome 'CROWN' offers on elegance of times past and the front or side loading enables the Double Star Parlor Stove to serve as a closed heat source or blazing fireplace" The ad I found had a regular price for this stove set at $188.48 however it was on sale for $168.48....Wow, today 2013 some people want up to 1k for a rust bucket while others just want it gone from their property....... Back to my story...I do not know everything but what I do know works for me! This video will end with details about this particular stove about everything possible. Then a surprise ending where I actually release custody of the stove because it's to good for the back yard.....................The following paragraph is what I wrote in the ad when I placed this stove up for sale the day I finished the restoration....(it sold the next day)............'begin..
............This wood stove was refinished to go outside on a patio, porch or back yard. After completion it was determined to be in great condition & may be better suited as a stove used in a home, shop, garage or even to be displayed. It is ready to use complete with brand new chimney pipe & damper.
This classic wood stove has been completely gone through, striped to bare metal & finished in stove paint. The fire box was coated in an extreme hi temp finish. It is in excellent condition with new 8' chimney. Has not been fired since the restoration/refurbish job. I cant call it a restoration because the nickle/chrome pieces are not in perfect condition since they were only polished out & show their age somewhat. The only noticeable flaws is some rust pitting on the decorative crown piece (see picture), these could be reworked and re-plated if desired.
A nice piece that is ready to use.
A wood stove or fire place will add to the enjoyment of your home This is a Washington Parlor Stove replica. I'm not sure of it's manufacture date but would guess somewhere from the 60's . Stove is in great working condition, no noticeable cracks or damage.Overall, this is a great looking stove. The only information I could find on this stove comes from a book called The Wood Burning Stove Book by Geri Harrington. It says, "The design of the Washington Parlor Stove is truly antique--in fact, it is still made from the original hand-carved patterns that the Washington Stove Works first used in the last century (1800's). It burns both wood and charcoal and has side and front-loading doors, as well as a removable top. In addition, the top has two removable stove lids for cooking If preferred, this stove can be installed directly on the hearth, within the fireplace by removing the legs or base." I measured the stove at approx. 26" wide by 21" front to back, and 33" from the floor to the top of the stove........'END....Thats it here, I hope I didn't blabber too much & also hope others see how easy it is do this sort of thing. I am going to need to buy a resporater for sure, all that spray paint gave me a headache that day & the taste of grinding rust sucks!!! Hope it was worth your time........................Any questions? Ask away, I check in here often.

I am glad the customer is going to put it inside his house, the stove deserve it, I would not sell it for nothing, look is was more decorated then the blue one, second it had heating plates at the top, which I think the blue one did not have them, way better design! Thank you for the video, I learned about high temperature paint!!!!

Thanks for the kind words. It's funny because the day after I finished restoring this old stove I sold it & I didn't mention anything to the new owner about this video (it wasn't edited yet) I wonder if they'll see it, doubt it but maybe. At least they'll see a job well done. Still can't believe it was sold in less then 24 hours. It wasn't cheap either. Thanks again -Mike

I did one identical to this one. I used mica stove glass for the "vent" on front door instead of the aluminum foil. That way you can see the fire burning.

Very nice job! I have exactly the same stove, except the nickel parts (mine are bronze).
I bought it brand new 25 years ago so I know the material of the front door window: It is mica. Yes, MICA !!! Very bright idea, because it is really cheap and fire proof. It is a "rock" material, like a gelatin and transparent. Completely fire-resistant. You can find it in electric spares store, relatively cheap.

Shouldn't you have used a sealant between panel connections? I under stand you wanted to use it outside but you sold it I really hope the person that bought it was aware it was unfinished and more "mocked up".

I have this stove and about to put it into service. thanks for the history. How did you deal with the oval flute for pipe? I am going to put gasket lining for a tight seal and purchase a coal grate to burn coal. Yours came out great. I do not have that nifty screen maybe I can make one .

  • @stovemica
    @stovemica 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike
    Well done.
You said that the fire grate was missing, but on a lot of wood burning stoves, there isn't a grate, it just burns on the base plate and coal stoves have a grate for the air needed for coal.
Also you said you would of liked glass in the door, in fact it would of been stove mica sheets in there, the foil was just a quick fix somebody did.
    Keep the videos coming.

it looks really good but I really don't see any differance from using steel wool to try to give it a satin finish. it still looks flat to me.
But you did a good job. Tid Bit for you, there is to be a special type of glass in the front door it is called Isingglass.

It actually looks pretty identical to the one my grandparents had in their house - a tad bigger maybe (not a "Made In Taiwan" one tho LOL), except that there was a window in it. I remember that the "chrome" parts weren't that shiny either and that grandpa had taken off the top part for safety reasons (hot stuff swinging around with active kids running around = accidents bound to happen). It was a family piece that had been passed on from generation to generation, starting from the 1800's. But sadly enough, when grandpa died and when grandma sold the house afterwards the stove was left behind, sitting where it had been sitting for half a decade (in that particular house). Such a shame. I wonder if the people who bought the house kept the stove or not. Probably not, because it was a pretty big piece in the living area, it took up a pretty good amount of space from what I recall.
Cheers and job well done, I must say! I hope you were able to make a good profit on it!

No paint needed on cast iron, use Rutledge Cast Iron Polish, use mica for the window, it is actually a thin stratified stone that is somewhat clear and flexible , you cut it with scissors and it can handle temps to 1500 degrees!

I trust rustoleum to be a durable quality paint. I have had great results with it for years. VHT is a newer paint in my arsenal. It is for extreme temps. Using VHT in the fire box was an experiment. Order stove bright brand paint for your wood stove. Its a bit pricier but its the standard for painted stoves (from what I have read) Stove bright will most likely be what Im going to use to paint the next stove unless I get lazy and just use rustoleum....

Hey man that is cool. I have the same stove. I'm not sure if it was made in Taiwan. I will check. Just to let you know, I've had this stove for 17 years. I bought the home and it was in the basement. At that time, the front grill that you put in the front door actually had some MICA as the window. The MICA broke and all that is left is the screen.

I didn't see you use any new furnace cement to seal the the castings to each other that are bolted together. That's the stuff that was caking off the edges when you disassembled it. It must leak air terribly. Tell me I'm wrong.

I think you are, actually, wrong. If you have proper draft, the stove will not send smoke into the room. None of these stoves had caulking back in the late 1800s. I used this stove for about five years and it was really nice. Put mica in the window and that's it. No rope seals necessary.

Great job. I really like your attention to cleaning and prepping for paint. Painting the inside with black VHT great idea I paint the insides as well it protects them. I was amazed when you did the steel wool trick I have been doing that on stove paint and it gives it a neat look. I noticed that you spray the stove which there is nothing wrong with. Personally I prefer to paint them with light coats and a good brush. After firing one and letting the graphite stove paint I use cure I use the finest steel wool and gently buff the cured surface because it blends the black and gives it a neat shine. I can leave one with the steel wool look or go over it with a clear high temperature coating. I just do the same thing to stoves as I do with headers and exhaust manifolds. Did that stove have a Mica window in the door ? Great videos. thank you.

I had to laugh at him (ok, inside....)every time I mentioned what I was going to do to it..."oh no, never paint these. You've gotta use stove black"...."No, no, I'd never take a power tool to remove the rust...Just some steel wool, some soap black, and boom...you're done.... I have a similar stove and thought I needed an oval adapter, turned out that a standard 6" stove pipe when compressed into an oval fit perfectly.

Does it leak smoke at all the joints?

All that "crud" and cement looking stuff was seam sealant. And you put none back in when you "restored" the stove. This stove is unsafe to use!! It will leak air at every seam now and make it very hard if not impossible to control air flow to the fire!

Not really restoration. Painting is hiding.
