your mathodical DIY approach but especially your layed back easy to understand presentation style is very refreshing. You're a TV brand in waiting: the UK DIY market is huge, your home grown style is more informative and interesting, than most of the numerous DIY programs on prime-time UK TV: I doubt stove refurbishment would attract a big enough audience for the TV stations, but you're clearly capable of delivering any project: selecting mass appeal projects equals Mike the TV star!
I just found your video. Great job. I picked up your stoves twin brother about a week ago. Same thing, Craigslist, good price. Did a similar restore but used a wire brush for the initial cleanup. Have it installed in my woodworking shop and it's been baking my a&& out of there ever since. It's very efficient. I'm extremely happy with this little beast. Good job and enjoy.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS TASK LOOK FEARLESS AND do able!! My patonpending southbend started to rust in my living room after 27 years. I'm. Learning so much.mine has nickel how do I clean the nickel part.
I'm going to look at a stove like this in about an hour. Thanks to watching the two videos, I now have an idea of what's going on with the thing. I can at least see how things are SUPPOSED to work, when I look at it. (the chrome top, etc), and not to get too concerned if the mica/glass is missing. Depending on how it actually looks in person, I may take mine apart and clean it up, and paint it. Thanks for all the tips.
O wow. I have one of those I like just a little finishing restoration I just love mine so pretty I think I paid 60 dollars for mine. So happy to see someone else that has one
AWESOME job!! I'm working on mine.. I'm having trouble finding the oval to round fitting. I see you used a coffee can. Have you burnt it yet! Do I need a damper? What about your chimney cap...size? You definitely motivated me!!!
thats cool I have one made in the 1800's and im going to clean it up and sell it. I don't think it has the crome but we took it out of the original homestead house on our property. A tree fell on the roof so we had to tear it down and I wanted to save this cool old stove. Just brought it to the barn today to clean it up.
Hello, do you how old the stove is? You said its one from the 70´s? We have the same model and need some infomation to have the opportunity to use it. Where can I find more Information about it? Thanks R.
Nice! good detail and hard work, I did the same with mom's stove, took me longer due to the bolts. You have to have patience for this type of restore job. Ok,,, on to part 2. Ray
Thanks for the kind words, Patience yes & it helps to have a background doing finish carpentry. Looking back my biggest mistake was not wearing a respirator while sanding that nasty metal, Ive since picked up a nice $40 respirator from the hardware store & wow, what a difference. Hey Ray, I checked out your channel hoping to find a video of the stove you restored. I like that sort of thing. Thanks for watching ;)
Thanks a bunch for the video, I recently acquired a M-20 Round Oak Parlor Stove that I am going to start on this week. It is a little worse than your stove was, I hope it comes out decent. The main barrel on mine has some damage on the bottom and I am not sure how to repair it. Might take it to a fab shop and ask if the can help me with it. Also missing the finial on top and a décor skirt on the bottom but I can keep my eye out for those.
Hi, Just bought a franklin stove made in taiwan at an auction that weighs a ton. It is a simpler version of yours but would also like to use it outside. Know nothing about woodstoves but have good wood to burn. How high does the chimney actually have to be for one that is about the same size as yours and what will you put yours on. Love the potbelly one you showed, but the height of that flue would get killed in out high mountain winds here in W. MD Please help....can you give us a few pointers for what to look for in how it should work? Thanks for any help. Yours looks awesome..but we are just concerned with ability to burn up wood while we cook and warm ourselves....
if your going to really get into doing a few of these or other cast iron restoration, the easiest way to clean it by far is by making an electrolysis tank They are cheap and easy to make and a lot more effective and less work than scrubbing.
hey mike you did a awesome job i bought an identical stove n trying to restore but have problems taking the screw n nut off any suggestion they r really rusty
Cool, you can try soaking the bolt & nut with pb blaster or wd-40, let it soak over night, pl blaster is sold at auto part stores. If its completely shot then maybe cut or grind off. A big mistake I made was not wearing a resporator or dust mask. Good luck & I wish you luck :)
lol, I probably would if I lived there ;) Im on the west coast though. Maybe just restore the exterior of the stove, it will still look just as nice when its in use. polish the chrome pieces, paint the iron & you'll be good to go.
Glenwood is a good stove. Problem is people want an arm & a leg for one that needs a full restoration. I have been looking for another antique wood stove to work on. I picked up another stove like the one in the video a few months back. I also just contacted a seller regarding a 1880 wood stove of some sort but that one may already be sold. Good luck with your project, take your time & have fun.......
I stumbled across this video and the funny thing is that I have an original from the 1800's in my 12x16 camp. I got it for free from my uncle who abandoned It in his old camp that was falling apart. Trust me when I say it will through intense heat for a small camp.
hope you weren't to close to the birds with that oven cleaner! really cool project. to bad it wasn't a real old one.but can't wait to see the finished product.
glad I can help. Thanks for watching my videos & the comment. Please post a video if you do anything to a wood stove. I can add it to my wood stove play list...
Did you ever do a video where you did some extensive red painting of your work bench? I remember seeing one years ago and was impressed with the quality of the work you do! Needless to say excellent quality work with this stove too. I'm buying the exact same type and will use this as my reference. Thanks for the vids and keep up the good work!!
From what year is this stove from? I have one that is exactly the same, and im curious to find out when they started making this fine piece of work. :)
WOW, I went to cl under eugene like you said & there are a few good deals for parlor stoves there. That $600 one looks huge, I like it a lot. I see 2 like this one I restored going for $400-$525. I actually made one heck of a profit selling this one. Still been looking daily for another one to fix up in my area (south calif) Hey but that stove you mention in madras for $600 looks killer. Someone should try to get that & offer starting $300, he he.. Thanks for the awesome heads up, oregon's nice
hey, i just found a guy selling this exact stove only its the original (not Taiwan )... do you know who made this original stove, it has the real nickel on it, no stamp on the back !!! really good condition, got it for 50 bucks !!!
Hey man i have a stove damn near identical to yours cept mine doesnt have the two cook spots on top....its just flat. And on the back is says parlor stove made in ta wan and lastly it has two knobs for the airflow instead of the slider vent. What throws me off is the made in ta wan on the back. Do u know anything about how old it is or if its a knockoff?
to get the air control to open put wd-40 for 2 to 3 days (thats what my son did) and it will pop right open (and his was horrible it was just about rusted through)
Zep spray from automotive dept. to remove nuts and bolts. The windows are made of mica you can purchase new online and other parts and pins. The Concrete is not concrete it is ash that got wet then dried over the years.
30' From the birds, they are in another area on the property (still loud) & wind blowing fumes away from them that day but your right, got to be careful. Oh yeah, by time you read this the next one should be on, thanks for watching & I hope it's not to much talking, sometimes I get going he he -Mike
Hi Mike... today is Wednesday 2/27/13 and I just saw this on Craigslist... look familiar? Go to Craigslist Eugene,Oregon, General, then Search for Parlor Stove - $600 (Madras oregon)
the little one is a coal stove, and stainless steel screws a and hardware tightened properly will last a lifetime. back in the day we used stove black, to preserve the finish, I know of no paint that will put up with the heat that these produce, most all old stoves used asbestos rope for door gaskets.. cleaning can be done with a speedblaster, remember to use a approved dust mask !!!!! Hey ..try to run that little stove on coal, it will surprise you.BIG TIME! And the door glass is called mica if I remember right and is fragile. nice build it fun to spark a stove like this back to life. the chrome parts might be off being discarded, as they are fragile and will rapidly rust, if used outside in the elements . .
Great work, but use some gloves in these projects. You don't want your skin absorbing all that stuff. And Taiwan probably used some interesting non EPA approved toxin-ish mixtures when they put these stoves together in the 70s.
I just bought one. Had one on our acreage bought from Simpson Sears in the 70's. Will be restoring it in February. Thank you for the video.
I have same one, used for years. KEEP FIRE LOW.... AND OFF THE BOTTOM. Otherwise good stuff

I found a Glenwood parlor stove that really needs help. Your video will be my guide as I restore this baby. Thank you very much!
I have this exact same wood burner and I'm cleaning it up now ..... do you know where I can order some missing parts?
I have the same one just brand new, never installed. Fixing to set it up soon.

AWESOME job!!
I'm working on mine.. I'm having trouble finding the oval to round fitting. I see you used a coffee can. Have you burnt it yet! Do I need a damper? What about your chimney cap...size?

I have a parlor stove very similar to yours. Is a little small for my environment but I found it so beautiful that I cannot change. it.

Where did you get the oval adapter?
I made it by bending 6" piping I believe. It fits and a few screws holds it.
Buenas noche s me gustaría tener una de esas estufas
It is called isinglass or mica glass that was used in old stoves!

What kind of chimney pipe is that? I'm buying a cast iron stove to refurbish for the yard and not sure what to use for the chimney... Thanks!
This is 6" single wall chimney pipe purchased from lowes
Excellent. Thanks! Loved your refurb, BTW!
glad I can help. Thanks for watching my videos & the comment. Please post a video if you do anything to a wood stove. I can add it to my wood stove play list...

It is from the 1970's a 100% functional recreation.
The glass is called Mica. It’s fine silica sand glass.
I have one in my pole barn that’s never been used

Hi Mike... today is Wednesday 2/27/13 and I just saw this on Craigslist... look familiar?
Go to Craigslist Eugene,Oregon, General, then Search for Parlor Stove - $600 (Madras oregon)
you're welcome
Taiwan special sold by Sears
Dude. You sound like Dane Cook:)
WOW
Did you say concrete for the 100th time

Take it to a sandblasted so I don’t haft to be tortured with the endless babble
Great information, but please, PLEASE stop moving the camera around so much...it's nauseating...
on your front door its some kind of clear plastic
great video; nice job.
The door 'glass' is probably 'mica'. you can get it on amazon very inexpensively
Here you go MRnounoursSQ, this is a good link for mica.
www.antiquestoves.com/mica/index.htm
You can make it yourself, just loook and learn from woodprix.
Great work, but use some gloves in these projects. You don't want your skin absorbing all that stuff. And Taiwan probably used some interesting non EPA approved toxin-ish mixtures when they put these stoves together in the 70s.
Looks like a coal stove
Stodoys plans are amazing!
All we saw of the restoration is nothing ... the rest was talk talk and more talk ....no one wants to hear some one yapping about what they did ....
Can’t take anymore of the pre amble to much talking is an understatement
you talk too much and work too less
