I just use a small 1/4 piece of an SOS pad to clean the glass. It gets the burned pitch right off. It doesn't scratch the glass either. Loved this video...I'm an old time grandma been eyeing my ugly stove wondering if I should paint. it. After seeing this...I certainly am not! Will the polish work on the stovepipe as well?
To clean the glass on a woodstove door use a dampened paper towel and dip it in cold wood ash. Make sure the glass is cool to the touch and rub the paper towel on the glass until it's clean, it takes literally less than a minute. Then take a clean paper towel and wipe the residue off. Much cheaper and easier than store bought cleaners.
I learned same trick this year and it gave me phenomenal results on my 15 year old Harmon pellet stove’s glass. No other product can compete with a damp towel and cold ash! 👍
Neat. It looks like, with some intelligence and elbow grease, you managed to turn an okay purchase into a really great one. I don't know anything about wood stoves so I didn't realize how many parts they had. Knowing those details also makes for smart shopping when buying used. Good work!
I would have never thought of a Polish paste. I just picked up a 100yr old gas stove from the first School house in my area, its in decent shape but hasnt bin used in many years. Going to get it fixed up and put in my outdoor cook shack. Thanx for sharing
I love refinishing older wood stoves. I have not yet used stove polish, but when I get the chance, now I will. I have always repainted them, but looking back, some of them probably didn't need it.
I had a stove that turned out to be about 1840s-50s. Someone painted it with ordinary white house paint, so I had a lot of cleaning. Once cleaned, it was BEAUTIFUL !! I did eventaully sell it as it was an extra. I paid less than $50 for it and sold it for $249 a few weeks later.
The Salamander Hobbit stoves are brilliant little things and widely available in UK. Top tip for cleaning the glass and anything with wood residue on it is to dip a damp cloth or paper towel in wood ash and then wipe the glass clean before giving it a final polish with a dry paper towel. It leaves the glass crystal clear. The stove was well worth renovating and you did a great job on it. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow! So impressive! I can't wait to do my stove and install it in my garden shed/dog kennel. Can't wait for the rest of the videos!! Now just need to figure out how to get the stove out from under 4 feet of snow and iced into the ground! Guess I need to wait until spring!
I didn't know about stove paste. I am restoring an old 1980's Kodiak Alaska. The thing is huge. But for my other stoves that have glass, I use crud off for the glass. Works wonders.
Great job cleaning up that stove. I’ve used ash from my stove mixed with water to make a paste then rub. I think I like you idea to use stovetop polish.
@@monkeybarmonkeyman It works better than any store bought option. Taught to me by an old timer. Tried it and couldn't believe I had wasted my money on inferior products.
When I saw this video I instantly thought of "Stove Polish" - first thing that came to mind - great stuff and great video - I'd love to have one of these little stoves for our family room to replace our vented gas burner....
Great video, I recently got my hands on a old rusted wood stove, alot bigger than this one but still needs the same kind of TLC. After grinding/wiping off all the rust I rubbed it down with a few coats of cooking oil (and even a bit of bacon grease) and burned a few hot fires in it..did a good job of sealing the surface from rust. Ill plan on getting some of that polish too and seeing how that compares. Enjoy the stove!
I always used ash straight from the stove it's self mixed with some cleaner and hand rubbed the glass with it. It works like a charm and NEVER scratches the glass. I usually take the glass out if it's really bad that way I'm not hanging up on the mounting tabs leaving parts of my cloth all over.
Fun and informative video Brother! Make me yearn for my ole Vermont Castings Stove. Darn, now I need to build a shed so I can have a wood stove again! Haha Cheers, Eric
I love those old wood stoves! I lived in a place once where the stove was over 100 years old. It was like a work of art and had rails along the sides for warming your feet. Ate wood like crazy..
I have a fireplace insert with a rusty exterior. I bought paint for it years ago and I'm glad I put it off. Thanks again for another brilliant how to video. You have an excellent channel. Please keep it up
From a person that uses the stove most of the year' I polish it up every year keep it looking nice. And keep the rust down from the water kettles. You can get those drill brushes on Amazon they help a lot. Thanx for the video.
I discovered that the absolute best thing to clean the glass is wood ash! apply with a news paper and water, and it gleamed like new. Couldn't believe it, after searching for a good cleaner, it was right in front of me all the time!
Thanks a lot for this video you saved me a lot of work using this instead of painting, it looks great even if it doesn't last i didn't really to paint this year.
The best way to clean that glass is use a sheet of newspaper or paper towel. Wet the paper and dip in stove ashes, then rub the glass with the paste till clean.
These tips will save people a lot of money over buying a new wood stove. In fact, if you were looking for a way to make some money on the side, buying cheap and restoring stoves could make you some good money.👍
Nice job! I wonder if that stove polish paste creates a black oxide coating like the metal blackening products out there. I need to address issues on an older pellet stove.
I have found with my stove the day after a really nice hot fire (not choked down) all I need is a damp paper towel and the glass wipes clean.. near no rubbing.
Thank you, I never used anything to clean my stove for many years, I think I will do that. as for cleaning glass, wood ash ( I filled a mason jar after a fire for this) , a paper towel and a dab of water would have cleaned the glass, streak free, in half the time, as stove glass cleaner.
BEST thing I have found to clean a dirty wood stove window. Spray on oven cleaner (do when stove is cold of course). First layer gets most of the gunk using a paper towel and then 2nd spray gets the hard to get stuff, squeaky clean every time, no scratches.
Stone the crows ! I have a stove to restore. Don't want to get it wrong Came right to your video here. BINGO ! Hole in one ! I'm going to start mine right now. CONFIDENT I'll be doing the right thing ! THANKS 😊
Can this method be used on an outdoor cast iron cooking "grill". The grill has two cooking methods - charcoal side and propane side. The lid/cover and exterior are showring sigs of rusting. IDK if this paste would help.
Hello I really enjoyed this video. I tried to find a video of your installation that you mentioned in your video and I cannot find it do you have a link?
Great helpful video! I don't have any rust on my stove but there are mineral deposits from steamer water evaporating on the stove top. Would the scrub pad be good for removing that?
“Considering the stove is almost 20 years old it still looks good”. Well of course it does, it’s cast iron, it will look good in a 100 years too. I just restored a huge cast iron stove made in Norway around 1880, over 30 different parts that goes together like a puzzle. It looks fantastic and it’s 140 years old. Unless these things are stored outside for decades they never really get old.

I have to say. Your videos are fantastic. No bs talking. Tackle the job and that’s that. Good work

Great suggestion, I’ve been using a damp dishwashing tablet which gets rid of the stubborn bits.
I go even more lowkey and use crumpled newspaper dipped in the ash. Works like a hot dang.
As a jewelry artist I find brass brushes second to none. Love these small wood stoves!

Thanks for the video. I cleaned an old stove inside following your video and could not believe results with minimal cost. Thanks

From Canada that is a fine looking small stove, looks like it should work very well
I just tried out your suggestion for putting the polish back on my insert. It looks brand new now. Thanks so much for this. Really appreciated.

For some reason, this video got me to hit the notification bell. Good job!
Great job cleaning up that stove. I’ve used ash from my stove mixed with water to make a paste then rub. I think I like you idea to use stovetop polish.
I've heard that works well with the glass - is that true?
@@monkeybarmonkeyman It works better than any store bought option. Taught to me by an old timer. Tried it and couldn't believe I had wasted my money on inferior products.
You lucky dog... I've always wanted a wood stove. Looks awesome. Great job saving a wonderful little stove.
I have just bought the same stove, it's in need of renovation, this video has helped a lot, many thanks.
When I saw this video I instantly thought of "Stove Polish" - first thing that came to mind - great stuff and great video - I'd love to have one of these little stoves for our family room to replace our vented gas burner....
Thanks for that awesome tip! Living off grid I rely on a wood stove daily. Now I can make it like new again. Take care from Canada eh!
So satisfying to see these transformed. Nice work!
I appreciate that, much easier than lawn care transformations for sure!

I am very excited to see how the install turns out. Parts are taking a very long time to show up!
Love it. Can’t wait to see it in action in the shed.
Me too, gonna be VERY cold outside when I install it, still waiting for some parts.
I love those old wood stoves! I lived in a place once where the stove was over 100 years old. It was like a work of art and had rails along the sides for warming your feet. Ate wood like crazy..
Awesome
I’m on the lookout for stoves!!
Incredible job, amazing transformation!
Thank you, it's a nice looking little thing
Wow the end result is impressive!
Great video! Excellent step-by-step. Thank you 👍🏼
Cool stove transformation. I always enjoy your videos, they are brief, interesting and topical. Good job.
I love the size of this!
I have a fireplace insert with a rusty exterior. I bought paint for it years ago and I'm glad I put it off. Thanks again for another brilliant how to video. You have an excellent channel. Please keep it up
This was super interesting to watch! Thanks for the info. Looking forward to the installation video. 👍🏻
Wow! You absolutely transformed that stove. Well done!
Looking foward to seeing it in your shop..
Yes they are hard to find..a good quality one anyway..
That turned out incredible and love these things.
great job. I use an engine cleaner product for the carbonized glass to make it like new effortless

Another top notch and high quality video, thank you!
Thank you for sharing this! We need to reface our cast iron i sert and this looks like the ticket!
Great video, thank for the advice! I'm going to give it a try. You should be at 1M subscribers soon. You definitely deserve it!

has always been a convenient yet powerful cleaner for wood stove glass. it's almost karmic!

Nice work. I wish in Australia it was colder so I could have something like this.
Thank you, You guys have that cool Ozpig thing, I want to make my own!
I honestly get excited for your video drops man! Luck would have it I just bought and installed a wood stove my self! what great timing.
Thanks a lot for this video you saved me a lot of work using this instead of painting, it looks great even if it doesn't last i didn't really to paint this year.
Wow!! Definitely going to be looking on Craigslist and Marketplace for one of these now 🤣🤣

I was so relieved when you cleaned the glass!
Nice job! I wonder if that stove polish paste creates a black oxide coating like the metal blackening products out there. I need to address issues on an older pellet stove.
Thank, I just bought a smaller wood stove that needs this done to it for $50. Was about to paint it lol. I think you just saved the stove.
Can't wait to see the video of you installing it!
That stove is so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!!!

Wow very nice and you could cook on the top too. Nice job, enjoy!
Beautiful work!
Thank You for sharing ! 😊
Nice work brother
Wow have had wood stoves forever but never knew of that polish. Awesome. Thing looks brand new. And I bet you paid 1/4 of the price 💕🤙

I don't have a wood stove but enjoyed watching this.
I appreciate that, thank you
Nice. Restoring a jotul 602 C soon. Good information to know.
Dude that’s awesome good job
Beautiful job and beautiful stove.
Great job.
Like it 👍
awesome restoration!
Another absolutely brilliant video 👍🙂
Wow what a difference, great job mate, well done
Thanks 👍
Thank you for a great video.
I'm excited to do this to mine I just brought:)
to be true i seen how small this stove was and that is what i found so interesting. good vedio
The best stove glass cleaner I've found is a damp rag or paper towel dipped into the soot inside. Takes carbon off the glass effortlessly.
Excellent video, many thanks!
Great tips...can't wait to see the rest. Thanks!
I found one almost identical to the one you are working on. Hope I can get it taken apart
What sort of roughness is the pad you are using, course, medium etc Thank you
Stone the crows !
I have a stove to restore. Don't want to get it wrong
Came right to your video here.
BINGO !

I'm going to start mine right now.

but omg that stove is so cute tho
Great helpful video! I don't have any rust on my stove but there are mineral deposits from steamer water evaporating on the stove top. Would the scrub pad be good for removing that?
Your videos are so amazing! Thank you 😊
Glad you like them!
Nice job! You see a lot of stoves that size in Ireland.
Thank you, you guys have a great selection of smaller stoves there. I have no idea why we get so few, they are awesome.
Great video!
Any ideas on where to find old doors and parts??
Cool stove buddy!👍🏼☮️
Try using the ashes with a bit of water on the glass . It's free and works like a charm .
► Looks brand new!
Thank you, it turned out so much better than expected

a little bit of ash from the previous fire can also be used as a mild abrasive to clean the glass.
What grit scotch bright or does it matter ?
Great video
Well done.
