    Not sure those pistons are legal. Thomas the tank engine has copyright protection, think this could be the next big automotive scandal after VW.

  • @gosportjamie
    @gosportjamie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If the missing chunk of the exhaust valve did go straight down the exhaust then you need to have a good look at the exhaust side of the turbo as you might have damage to the impeller vanes which could cause issues once the engine is all back together due to it not being able to spin up fast enough to deliver the correct amount of boost...
    It's not a great surprise that its that valve that's burnt out as it's usually the exhaust valves closest to the centre of the engine that run the hottest for fairly obvious reasons. It might be worth having a very good look at the exhaust valves from cylinder 2 as the corresponding one in that cylinder may be exhibiting signs of heat deterioration too. With the one having burnt out then it's likely that the other closest to the centre of the engine has been running hot too...

    • @johnwood4707
      @johnwood4707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I reckon it is more likely that there was a flaw in the original valve metal and the hot exhaust gasses gradually wore it away overtime one a tiny leak is established the slow deterioration would be almost imperceptible

  • @edz7555
    @edz7555 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    did a leaking exhaust valve cause the 'running rich' look to the cylinder and valves, or did the running rich cause the valve to fail?... Obviously its broke, but why???..
    👍🏻👍🏻

    Take a look at the blades on the turbine wheel (hot side), there is a slight chance that the blades have had a tough time with chewing on that small piece

    Being a BMW tech I have done hundreds of these, as others have mentioned replace oil filter hosing gaskets and turbo feed pipe and chain kit, use new vanos adjustment bolts and crank bolt, make sure they are correctly tightened, your kick yourself if that turbo feed pipe starts leaking and you have to take front off and cat again

    Hey mate, could you take a look at the fuel injector of the cylinder with the burnt valve? I think that did not happen without a reason, could be a faulty injector (so it was running too lean)?
    I think it would be a safe bet to rule that out first, so the same thing does not happen to the next owner after a couple thousand miles.

    I am a fairly new subscriber, really love the channel i had a mini way back in 1965 and this one is TOTALY different to what used to be a fairly simple motorcar. Great video's so please keep them coming . on second thoughts the burned valve would not neccessarily have burned out quickly , it may have developed a crack and slowly burned the valve surface around the crack so there may not be any small pieces left in the exhaust system .

If I'd have started it I thought it would go bang as the timing might a gone out. Luckily I never did.. had a few problems (I think stem seals resulted burning oil, but sold it before I fixed it..) but always loved the car. Planning to rebuild one in the near future.
