Do you condition your leather jacket?? Or just keep all the bugs and road grime?

    • @chuckthesham5195
      @chuckthesham5195 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually, when I started back riding in 2004 after a bunch of years' absence, I bought about 8 leather jackets. I just rotate between them plus a couple of summer jackets.

I use Leather Love about every six months. Mink oil also works very well. Both condition the leather and add some water repellency as well.

As there is no leather jacket that can fit me, I use textile. It washed every two years or so. I do not mind the bugs that much, but I think too much washing is not great for the material. Also, do not recondition your leather stuff too often, as overcaring makes it too soft and squishy. Then it gets stretchable, and is basically dead. I learnt that the hard way with my horse tack from times long gone.

Twice a year without fail. After a decade and 70ish thousand miles my jacket and chaps look like the day I bought them.

Once it's too hot for the leather jacket and chaps I take them into the back yard and wipe them down with saddle soap, rinse it off and then treat them with sno seal. Similar product but wax based. Also wash my denim vest and spray it with silicone. Makes everything pretty water resistant.

Hey, Jess, mink oil works really well if you put the leather in front of the wood stove or some other source of heat (a hair dryer also works) for awhile then apply the oil. It gets into the pours of the leather and really increases the water repellency of the leather. Old biker trick.

😎 Good video for a cold February day. I used to ride all winter (in college I had only my motorcycle). Sometimes I’d get so cold I couldn’t feel my fingers or toes. But my leather jacket is a vintage “Easy Rider” look alike, and it’s still in decent shape. I’ll have to try mink oil. Thanks.

I have not used Mink Oil I have heard it is hard on the stitching. There is a product called Lexol that is a leather treatment. Look and see if there is a leather shop or saddle maker in your area and call them and ask what they recommend. I am glad it usually rains here although we might get a little snow later this week. Spring is coming I promise :)

I bought a Vanson (American-made) leather jacket in 1970. The only "conditioner" that I applied to that jacket was an occasional shot of Amor All cleaner, Amor All preservative and some elbow grease. Yep -- the jacket still fits. Jess -- you have such lovely hair (if I may be so bold in saying). My hair is as long as yours, but I'm a bit "sparse" on top. Ha! Cheer-o, gal. Ride safe.

I don't own any heated gear and I've found the best way to warm up my hands while I"m out riding is by grabbing the head of my engine. If your gloves are leather and insulated it doesn't damage your gloves or burn you. The heads on some bikes may be harder to reach than others but it helps me a lot

Great job. If you really want a more permanent solution, if you want to go thru the process, is to rub the jacket all over with denatured alcohol (only once) with a micro fiber cloth, then get some fiebings pro dye in black and use another microfiber cloth and wipe the whole thing down with the fresh dye(wear gloves). After you let it dry 12 hours then rub down with the mink oil. That thing will look like it came off the hanger at the store again. I do this all the time with boots. Deuces ✌️

I wonder how jackets are dyed/where made these days. I've just given a leather motorcyle jacket to a charity shop, which I'd bought in 1978 (yes, but I don't look any older with my helmet on), which has been soaked, frozen, dried on radiators. But which was still jet black. Modern jackets fade really quickly. This is in the UK so I don't know where bike kit is manufactured where you are.

Salt is our major nemesis in this area. And as I write I am warming up from plowing 6" more damn inches of snow off my drive. Thank you Mr. Deere. After I parked the tractor back in the garage I told the Road King and Goldwing their time is coming. I hope it is sooner than later.
Be well stay warm.. Might I suggest we have a Her Two Wheels picnic out in your area. Not wanting to make extra work for you....you just pick / secure the spot since you are local. Everybody bring something and have a pot luck lunch.

Here's one for you old (like 1960s) little leaguers - use neetsfoot oil on a jacket. Back then it fixed my Mickey Mantle autographed baseball glove up after several days of leaving it out in the backyard - and through an Iowa downpour too boot! Heck...I was only 9 years at the time. It has faded again after 6 months but a repeat process should bring it right back. Now if I can just find something to wipe on to bring the tattered 1997 lining back!

Not bad, I use my old shoe brush from the Army, I have a good number for different types of use. While mink oil works there is another that will also refresh your leather making it softer. I can’t remember the old stuff but any cheap skin cream moisturizer will help leather last. I have a jacket lasting over 25 years, it was while in Korea I was informed about this by a leather dealer. Ponds cold cream is what I use.

Jess i have used mink oil in the past but a few years back found another product I like better called "Sno-Seal" a one step polish & waterproofing with bees wax formula. Been using on my Ridings jacket and pants, boots also my hunting boots for many years now. A tip I use is to pre-heat with a hair dryer a section at a time. Or in summer set out in the sun. Probably can find it on Amazon or Vances. Ride Safe

Easy way to oil chaps is to wear them and rub in the oil like you'd "wash your legs" ...bonus if you wear leather gloves to do it (then the gloves get oiled at same time) 😁👍🏻
Also other leather care/conditioner products used for horse saddles work great if the leather jacket is reallllllly dried out!

Conditioning leather is a must! I make custom leather goods, and always tell let my customers know how to condition their products. But I actually tell them too avoid mink oil. Natural animal derived oils will over time break down the fibers in leather. I always recommend Huberds shoe grease. It is vegetable derived and will not break down the leather over time. It is amazing and easily found on Amazon.

You got to stop messing around and get some heated gloves. If you don't want the plug in ones, get some battery operated one's, just get an extra set of batteries for a couple of extra hours of riding. That will give you 4 hours of heat on High. Though I think that medium will be fine, if you get a good pair. And me being a helmet freak, I'm digging that helmet your wearing.

Ha Jess , You had me scared there for a minute, I thought you were going to shoe-polish the jacket... lol.
I use " Dubin" leather wax to do the same, and at the same time it does "water-proof" my leathers. It doesn't remove the Patina so much as you did ..... I love the worn-in look, which BTW, = { No Noob on this bike....lol } ..... But, it does make the leathers A-one water proof, if done on a 3~4 month chore. Stay Safe.

I always use a good hand cream like lubriderm on my leathers. Works well on leather car seats too. Just let it soak in and rub with a clean towel.

I always take care of my leather boots and all when I use to have horse etc. Leather will last a life time if taken care of. I'm waiting on a starter relay right now. I plan on getting heated gear for rides under 40 degrees I run warm so simple thermals and good gloves and my leather is enough this summer going to be want even with all vents etc open. One use saddle soap and sponges to clean ya jacket tractor supply carries a liquid saddle soap that is awesome fiebing it's in spray form. I use the fiebings neatsfoot compound for oil. Basically it mink oil neatsfoot oil and a touch of silicone. I use to make my own mix on the farm. The mink and neatsfoot oil our great compliment to leather the touch of silicone helps with water proofing even lil more. The key is touch of silicone or you loses the leathers breathability. If ya make ya own 4 oz mink oil to 4 oz neatsfoot to tsp of silicone oil shake well store in a mason jar. I use qaultiy sponges for it and horse hair if I want to buff it shiny most the time the horse hair brush is rarely needed. Extra muddy days I keep a different horse hair brush to knock it down to sponge level. Depending on the brush horse hair serves two purpose. When all said and done I like taking a microfiber cloth and giving a good wipe down or a fine cloth towel.
