    **I have rebuilt the Pi 3 / Zero 2 version from scratch due to issues people were having whereby video snaps would crash Attract Mode. Seems to be fixed now, new link here: drive.google.com/file/d/13pzDKYbEBbZCHIdtY_i7gNEvPViTNfSJ/view?usp=share_link

      Hi - love this build. The video snaps are still crashing during the screen saver. It happened when there are 4 up on the screen at the same time, twice today on the Vectrex movies. I'm checking for corrupt .mp4 files but they all seem to play back. Any ideas? Maybe I can disable the multi-snap option under the screen saver menu and just have it play full screen videos during the attract mode? Thank you!

    • @michaelbarrett9
      @michaelbarrett9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems that by disabling the screen saver so it doesn't tile 4 video snaps it doesn't crash anymore! It works to play full screen snaps and the multi-tiled image files, but it crashes randomly when the screen saver plays 4 video files simultaneously. There's a setting under the attract mode screen saver preferences to disable that one setting and it hasn't crashed in days. Thanks for this build!

    This is WONDERFUL!!!
    I spent 2 days trying to set up something almost exactly like this for a vertical 4-way game cab (on a 4:3 monitor). I managed to get almost everything functioning as intended, but could NOT get Attract Mode to work.
    Then I started over with this image, and everything was just as I wanted in a matter of minutes!
    Setting resolution to 1280x1024 5:4 made all the games display perfectly.
    I spent about 1 hour deleting all the games that I didn't want. It's a dedicated vertical cab with only 4-way controlled games, and now it's exactly as I wanted.
    THANK YOU for your EXCELLENT work!

    Now available for Raspberry Pi 1 / Pi Zero - drive.google.com/file/d/13opfTG7AgZOEE4uQwR5KYTGrTvjjhU8e/view?usp=share_link
    Note this is a stripped down build compared to Pi 3 / Pi 4 builds, simply due to the performance of the old Pi 1 / Pi Zero. Be sure to read the included readme file.
    All the best.

      This an awesome image for a vertical cab. It is just missing my favorite puzzle game Klax. Do you have any advice on where to put the various files and any tips when adding games to Mr Burns?

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jeffk4824 Hi, glad you like the image. The reason Klax is missing from the image is because it is not a vertical game, its horizontal. You can add it by all means, but it will squash into a vertical ratio so may look a little off but will be perfectly playable!
      You'll need to add the below items to the following locations:
      Rom: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/
      Screenshot: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/snap/
      Video: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/snap/
      Marquee: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/marquee/
      Wheel: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/wheel/
      Then you will need to add an entry to the Attract Mode romlist (just copy any existing line and amend the rom name columns), which is located here:
      /opt/retropie/config/all/attractmode/romlists/Arcade.txt
      Hopefully I have the file locations right from memory but if you have any issues ust let me know.
      All the best
      Steve

    Found an issue with a game called "Return of the Invaders". Everytime I scroll to it in the arcade game list, it crashes retropie. The error is "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'char const='. Aborted. Then it is back at the command line prompt. I renamed the rom and config files and now the game doesn't show up, so it can't crash it anymore. I do not know what this game is, so I don't really miss it, but I thought I would report it here. I do not know if it's a "Mr Burns" config issue, or a deeper retropie/attract mode issue.

    New Question: I was trying out some of the other displays and some of them are missing the artwork for the icon. I investigated the "grid" layout and it was using "snap" for grid artwork. I changed it to "marquee" instead and it uses the marquee graphics for an icon (slightly smushed). There is a dir called "snap" in the Mame2003 folder, if I put png files in there would it use them instead? And if I ran scraper would it populate this folder? actyally, I spent a lot of time getting better graphics on my fullsized setup running awsome SaUCE and may just use those. and Thanks for answering my other question, I finally figured it out.

    Fantastic job! I have brought my old cocktail cabinet back to life.
    The only problem I’m having is that I can’t get into the MAME config screen to set the games to “cocktail” mode. Has the default TAB key been replaced by something else?

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi. Any game using a Mame emulator will have the TAB key functionality, but the FinalBurn emulators do not (fbneo, fbalpha).
      Try instead holding down the start button for a few seconds to enter into the system options. If that didn't help then you can access the dipswitches via the core options in the retroarch menu. See here for further info and good luck!

      Thanks Steve, do you know if fbalpha can support cocktail mode (flipping)? Otherwise I might have to change things to use MAME.

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pat McLaughlin From what I have just read online it seems that some games will support flipping and some won't. All I could suggest is to try it and if it does not flip then change the emulator to one of the mame emulators as you say. As a last resort you may need to change the rom itself if it is not compatible with one of the other emulators (i.e. a different romset version).

The only issue I am having is getting cocktail mode working for games that support it. I enable the dip switch while in a game, changing it from 'upright' to 'cocktail'. But when I test playing a 2 player game, the screen never flips when it changes to player 2. I have tested Mrs Pacman, Pacman, and Donkey Kong. Is there another setting I am missing? Has anyone else gotten it to work?

    Which is the best resolution for full screen on an arcade1up pac man partycade?

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on what monitor you have in your cabinet as I believe there are various different models. You can tell by looking at the rear of the display in the cabinet and finding the model number printed on it. I assume you have already bought a signal converter board that accepts the hdmi input needed for a raspberry pi? If so then the specs of that board should tell you what resolutions are supported.
      I imagine it will either be 1280x1024 (5:4 aspect ratio) or 1280x960 (4:3 aspect ratio), but as I say, search on your displays serial number to be sure.

    Hi, just got this running on a small countercade using a pi 3B...it's great so far... but after I set the rotation, it switches to "Attract mode" front end and my controller doesn't work quite right. I'm using a USB fight stick and KB to set things up, but the final countertop is only going to have a few buttons (3 right now, but I'm looking to add small buttons as needed for controlling things. Is there anyway to stay in EmulationStation after the rotation or get back to it? or does it not rotate correctly? Can I add a controller after using "attract mode"? I wanted to get it working before connecting and mapping final buttons... and final design will have a wireless SNES like gamepad to help with navigation...

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Yes you can get back to Emulation Station and it will be rotated. Just navigate to the Attract Mode menu and choose 'Switch to Emulation Station'. If you'd rather stay in Attract Mode then just press the 'Tab' key on your keyboard and you will see a menu item where you can set up your controller as required. You can set up another controller later too, bit it would be best to go back to Emulation Station to do that due to the fact it will also set the controller up for the emulators too. You can easily switch between Attract Mode and Emulation Station as many times as you wish and the rotation or resolution will not be affected.

Can I ask one question though please: I cannot seem to get any favourite to add. I have used the F key and get the dialogue "Add Xxx to favourites" "Yes/No" and obviously select "yes" but they never show in the Favourites list even after a reboot. Just the original 30-odd. • @smithers18
      @smithers18  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Have you changed the romlist by any chance? Both the 'full' arcade list and the 'favourites' arcade list need to use the same romlist in order for the favourites to be recognised (it stored the favourite marker inside the romlist file).

    • @dazaylward584
      @dazaylward584 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smithers18 Hi Steve. Thanks for getting back to me. No, the image is as burnt from the Arcade Punks download. No extra ROMS. The only thing I have done is amended the list to display without adult games (as per your tutorial above) Would that have affected it?

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Daz Aylward ah yes that's what I mean, so if you change the list to 'no adult' then you have to do it for both the 'full' arcade display (which shows all games all from the list) and also the 'favourites' display (which shows only favourites). Hope that makes sense?

For some reason when the build is set to attract mode the joystick controls are all rotated but only in attract mode and just during the menu. The games work great in both modes and when not in attract mode the controls work perfect in menu. Its driving me up a wall to push up and the menu doesnt work. Right is up in the attract mode menu, left is down . Up and down switch the menus instead of switching games. Its totally killing me not to be able to use your awesome attract mode without going out of my mind. In the favorites menu the control is just backwards. Where would i change that without messing up the other menus or the games? TIA :)

      Hi. You can change the controls in Attract Mode to whatever you want them to be. From memory I think if you press Tab on the keyboard then it'll bring up the attract mode menu. Hi. How far did you get on the first boot? Did you set a rotation & resolution using the scripts? I only ask because you may have set a resolution that your monitor doesn't support, hence the black screen. You could edit the config.txt file in your pc to check what resolution has been applied and change it / comment it out to get it working again if that was the case.

      @La soffitta del Nerd I wouldn't rule out a faulty power supply to be honest. They can be finicky with power requirements if using non-offical power supplies. Also, problems with power supplies can lead to a corrupted file system, so it could be wise to re-install a fresh copy and try again from the start? Do you have another image you could try in the Pi in the meantime? Anything would do, e.g. Raspbian, just to test whether the power supply you have is working correctly.

      @JohnAnderson4242 Hi. It will need a 16gb card if i remember correctly (I'm not able to check right now).
      As for the display rotate command - ot depends on what model of the Pi you're using really. The Pi 4 does not respond to that command, instead it needs to be rotated in a different way in multiple places. Also, the scripts do more than just rotate the screen, they set the correct resolution and screen size / viewport for the bezels and marquees etc. too. So it is worth using them rather than just adding the display rotate command. Hope this helps.

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As standard the lowest resolution you can choose in the build is 640x480, and I assume you'd need 320x240 (or 320x224?) for the arcade monitor? To get round this you could choose any 4:3 aspect resolution and then just manually edit the config.txt, cmdline.txt etc files. I assume you'd need to add some extra config regardless to get the adapter working too? I don't have a real arcade monitor myself so can't test it unfortunately, however if you can do it with standard Retropie / Attract Mode then yes, you will be able to do it with this build also. Hope that helps!

      @snoopyk88k 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smithers18 Thank you for the quick reply. yes, in the config you can set that VGA666 is used DTOVERLAY=VGA666, but it probably won't be usable with bezels at 4:3 ratio. When I have time, I'll try to play around with it. otherwise, recalbox has an item to switch RGB directly in the menu. and an arcade monitor is not needed, a TV with RGB SCART input is enough. I thank you for the quick reply.

    • @smithers18
      @smithers18  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jan Snopek no worries. Well it would be easy enough to make the changes yourself if you were able to do the initial setting up on a 'normal' monitor first, choose the correct rotation and choose any 4:3 resolution then once the script has done what it needs to do and you land in Attract Mode, just either SSH into the Pi or connect a keyboard, exit to console and make the changes you need.
      If you look inside the file at the location below you will see what changes were made by the script. Just mirror these changes for each file that needs the resolution stated (e.g. config txt, cmdline.txt, autostart.sh) but using your desired resolution.

      And yes, the bezels will not be available to any 4:3 resolutions but to be honest you wouldn't want them on anyway, it'd take up too much space on a 4:3 aspect ratio.
      Good luck, give me a shout if I can help with the configuration script etc.

      Really like to hear if you are able to drive a Arcade monitor even without Attract maybe the SD Favorite menu. Something like RGB-pi JAMMA runs its own OS.

      Same thing happens to me with the Vectrex games. Minestorm for instance, is quiet then gets loud at times, and Armor Attack has very strange noises. Some games just crash after 30 seconds of playing on Vectrex. Any advice to fix? This is on Pi 3B+

      I don't have a trackball myself to be able to test this but you should be able to follow the normal steps to get it working via the Retroarch or MAME GUI. See here for more info: retropie.org.uk/docs/Spinners,-Trackballs,-Lightguns,-and-other-Mouse-Devices/
