Quad Lock Vibration Dampener - Can this protect your smartphone from vibration damage?

I've been a Quad Lock user on my motorcycles for a number of years, but have seen an increasing number of reports of vibration damage to expensive smartphones, particularly as an Apple user, the iPhone. The Optical Image stabilisation mechanisms are complex and can be fragile. Given what they are trying to achieve it makes sense that the vibration from mounting it on a motorcycle could cause damage. Quad Lock has taken this seriously enough to design the Vibration Dampener to help protect your smartphone investment. Does it work? is it easy to incorporate into your existing setup? I try to answer these questions in this video.

It would make much more sense for quad lock to sell their mounts with these built into them already.

Fitted a Quadlock to my Ninja 650 and within days the camera stabiliser on my iPhone 11 went. Had that replaced under warranty and ordered the dampener, which hadn’t yet been released when I originally ordered my mount. The dampener seems to work for me so far. I wouldn’t necessarily say this was a quadlock problem as it happens with other mounting systems. I would t actually lay blame with anyone. Bikes vibrate, Apple don’t have to address the issue and Quadlock have invested time and money into a solution for an issue they wasn’t initially aware of. Thanks for the vid 👍🏼

Thanks, yep exactly my thoughts, its certainly not just quadlocks that have the issue, I should have clarified that more in the video. Quadlock discovered there was an issue and worked on a solution. I don't understand why people think they should be handing them out for free!

same here, I mounted my iPhone 12 mini to my Honda CBF250 and after a 150kms ride the optical image stabilizer went crazy, it shook the lens producing horrible noise and unusable photos. I've added this dampener to my mount and since then (2021. march) I haven't seen such problems. This august I moved to a Honda CB500f, no issues so far. I really recommend adding this extra to your Quadlock setup.

I’ve had my iPhone 11 Pro replaced 3 times this year using quad lock on my ‘19 Triumph Scrambler. The vibration dampener has been working for me so far and I’ve had my phone mounted for a 130 mile ride. Seems to be the best way they could do this and I didn’t have to pay for anything.

I've been using the dampener for the last couple of months, with a iPhone 7, so far no apparent problems. As Tony said it's cheap compered to the damage a phone can sustain through vibration so its worth the money. No major fitting problem involved, so do it as soon as possible..

People bleating on about how quad lock ruined their phones etc etc. No, if you decide to mount your phone to your motorbike, it’s your own bloody fault in my opinion. Good old blame culture. I’ve got a KTM and I’ve taken the risk to mount my iPhone (and just took delivery of the new anti vibration mount). If my phone goes wrong, I’ll only blame myself. I’d say well done to quad lock for providing a solution.

But I guess riding a KTM you're used to things breaking ( :-) ) If the mount had been properly tested in the first place, it would be what is known as "fit for purpose". The issue never affected me as I knew it was too rigid when I first installed it so made a soft mount for the holder, but that's only because I happen to have very specific knowledge about vibration and electronic devices.

I asked Customer service for a return or refund after the OIS went out in my iPhone 11 Pro Max. They walked me through the steps to file a warranty repair through apple and sent me a free vibration damper along with the steps to return if I still wanted. I’ve had it on my Honda CB300R for a while now bouncing the poor thing off the rev limiter and no problem. I hate that it happened to my phone, but I’m glad they made a solution that actually fixed the problem.

A bit late to the party but I can add my anecdote: I designed and printed my own fork stem mount to put my iPhone 11 on my CBR1000RR. A couple of rides later the camera was dead. Luckily I am able to repair Apple stuff so I managed to replace the camera unit myself. I have an old iPhone 5S that I use now on the same mount instead, purely for a bit of Waze (need to look out for speed cameras ;)). In my opinion the damper is essential.

The annoying thing about quad lock, and all case manufacturers for that matter, is that unless you have the latest and greatest phone from a major manufacturer, you can't get a case to fit, they do offer a universal mount, but they say it won't stick to TPU or a range of other plastics that yup, phone cases are made out of because they're soft and shock absorbing, so unless you stick it directly to the phone, you're a bit snookered.....

Above 70 (indicated), it was very erratic randomly turning upside down, or sideways, then righting itself. Took it off for the return and no damage was done, but I was concerned.

Ive been using various quadlock mounts for many years, one iPhone camera was ruined from vibration. I found out sometime later, on forums that it was almost certainly the quadlock that caused it. What I find very disappointing, is why quadlock aren’t issuing these free of charge, to there customers. It’s like we know there’s an issue, but we are going to make customers pay to fix the issue. 😔

    • @mancavemoto

However all KTMs are on the list and they have a V2 as well.
    So I'm not sure now?
I've had Ram Mounts X-Grip for quite a while on different kinds of phones now, without any camera problems...

Personally I no longer mount a phone on my bike, i prefer a solution where the phone can be put away in a pocket, tag bag or luggage.

When I contacted the support or customer service center, they told me "sorry we can not do anything " and they sent me information about the size of the screws and told me to go buy replacement screws and send them the invoice. I could not find those screws anywhere and all this package without screws is useless.

I had and Iphone 11 and eventually my camera went kaput after mounting it for months on my Himalayan, using a GPS Mount rig (over the cluster) and a Interphone shield. The shield if perfect to protect the phone, but still. Now with a 13 Pro Max, I'm considering getting the quad lock but mount it on the handle bar, since appears to vibrate much less than the GPS rig.

Awesome video mate. Have you tried adding weight to your phone. Lighter units accept vibration easier. Adding weight has an inversely proportional relationship to the vibration transfer from larger to smaller componentry. Experimenting with the direction of duel mounting extra weight might help in a motorbike situation too. A slight offset and change of tilt might help too

I've been through two cases of the other brand so far and now only use the mount specific case when out on the bike. I know quadlock has stick on adapters but I wouldn't trust it on a bike. Quad Lock should not be allowed to claim this protects your phone because , clearly people are having issues after using the mount and dampener. I think more damage is done in the occasional drop onto a hard floor than will be seen on any handlebar.
