    I first heard a Roland Juno 106 in 1985 when I was in 8th grade. My middle school band teacher bought one for the Jazz Band, and when my friend started playing it I imagined that's what heaven sounds like

      I lucked out man... Mine died last year after 23 years of service (bought it from a Miami pawn shop as a broke High School student for $120) ...a massive sum for me then.
      I have an Alpha Juno and a 106... But I love the Poly 6 for pads and smooth sounds.
      I love em all.... But the Poly 6 just wound up on all my best works.... Somehow. 🤗

    My dad bought one of these when I was a kid. He gave it to me later on when I left home. I still use it today in some recordings. I think this machine defined my way of approaching sound synthesis. Also the keyboard action is quite nice. Depending on the role in the mix I replace the chorus by TAL Chorus 60 (VST plugin) since it is so noisy in the original. Well nowadays one would rather buy the Behringer clone of this, but still... I love using it, in the memory of my dad. Sometimes even on stage.

    I still remember going to Sam Ash and gave them all my cash, $900+, which I saved up from my part time job, and got the Juno 106, the least expensive synth they had on the floor. Took a cab home, opened the box and it was magical. I loved that keyboard, it was a perfect first synth for a teenager, affordable and simple to understand.

    • @anonymouse740

      Anonymouse , I did, using my tascam 4 track recorder, TR 909 Roland drum machine, a DX7, a Roland D50. College years were my productive years. But had to give it up for another career.

    I always use noise, even a little, almost inaudible can help later in the mixing phase. You'll have density which is useful with eq-ing, transient shaping, stuff like that. Reverb gives richer response as well. Actually noise is what we miss when we use synthesizers instead of organic instruments and that's one of the reasons why mixing synths is harder than mixing guitars for example. imho

    • @kiko1935
      @kiko1935 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fillentropy6519 you would choose only noise as the sound source and then shape the noise with the filter envelope and vca. It's pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Does anyone here know *why* noise makes a synth easier to mix? I'd think you'd want to record as clean as possible and *then* add effects after in most cases, giving you as much flexibility as possible; maybe you could add a noise layer after recording a clean version and tune to your preferences.
      Anyway, is it simply because it fills out the rest of the frequency spectrum that the oscillators + filters aren't present in? Is it because it adds a little bit of "chaos" to the sound, and if so, *how* does this make mixing easier?
      Also, what makes mixing a guitar more difficult than mixing a synthesizer *exactly?* I'm skeptical and would think this would depend on which guitar, which synth, how it's recorded, the skill of the mixer as well as their toolset, etc.

    Bought mine years ago from a secondhand shop with hard flight case, £ 35. Had the usual voice chip problem, had it fixed by an ex Roland engineer, £100 plus. Now it sounds awesome. parted with a few analog synths, but this is a stayer. So easy to use. A bugbear for me apart from the faulty chip problem is the Roland logo on the back is too high, doesn't look right, but a small problem. Thank you for another great demo. love the Vids.

      moog Dome do you mind if I ask you about this voice chip problem? Is it something the SH-101 gets as well? Only My 101 just makes the same high-pitched tone on every key. Does that sound familiar? I don't know how to fix it. Thanks!

    Back when I had a JX 10, I noticed the step increments in the filter cut off, and I followed them from the front panel with its two-digit readout. I would use it simultaneously with my Mm Voyager which had a triple-digit read out. I always wondered if the Roland R&D team could have produced a version of this with a triple digit read out that didn’t include the stepping.

  • @ducav2
    @ducav2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You hear the steps with resonance because of the waveform harmonics getting enhanced by resonance once the cutoff frequency matches any of them. DCO means only that the analog oscillator pitch is controlled and corrected digitally.

    • @AdamTheAd-vanc3d
      @AdamTheAd-vanc3d 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but in this case the steps are related to digital recall scanning.
      Thou I know exactly what you mean by the resonance picking out harmonics as you sweep.

    • @ducav2

      @@AdamTheAd-vanc3d What is the "digital recall scanning"?

    • @bernarddzido1496
      @bernarddzido1496 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The filter cutoff is controlled by a digital potentiometer, that means that it has only some amount of values it can be set at. Analog pots have 0-1 and everything inbetween, while modern digital pots have for example 256 steps which means that you get 256 values between 0-1.

    As far as I know, Roland Juno 106 is known for his famous bassline, which is mainly used in the music styles of Italo-Disco and Synth-Pop, but not in 8-bit games.
    There used much simpler synthesizers like some Casio or Yamaha.
    For example, here it is very clearly heard. Bank 22: th-cam.com/video/94y34qddl28/w-d-xo.html

    I have to know. Every time to take a shower, do you remove all of those rings and wristbands? That may eat up a lot of time
