Great review I bought the yaris Cross hybrid Excel in march And after 47 years of driving this is easily the best car Ive ever owned ‘ of course the 76 MPG is a great bonus 👍 🇬🇧
I’ve had one of these for 8 months. It will not do 65mpg on motorways. However, it will do that driving in town. I recently did a 2200km road trip in Australia cruising at 100-110 kph and achieved 4.9 l/100kms. But in city driving I get 3.6. Hybrids are less economical when highway driving.
Thanks for the review. I'd like to clarify thou, the yaris cross hybrid has an e-CVT, which has nothing to do (except the name) of the belt driven CVT-s. It is a sun-planet-ring gearset which joins together the smaller and bigger electric motors and the petrol engine. The continous variability comes from since the smaller motor (MGU1), because it is coupled as star and planets with the engine. Quite a clever system it is!
one of the realest car reviewer online...love the way you go straight to the point and not mourning about silly things. anyone need practically, big door bins, space etc end high features or top notch interior just go and spend the money for that. not all of us pockets are the same. great review and good car again from Toyota 👍👍👍
4:35 Nope. The e-CVT transaxle has no belt or cone. *Trust me* ... and the noise it makes is the engine running in its optimal rev range. The engine is not connected to the wheels, so it can run at whatever speed it chooses. What makes it sound "funny" to reviewers is that reviewers insist on things running like other cars they reviewed -- mainly non-hybrids, I expect. 10:17 The centre 20% ("armrest" / "ski-hatch") *does* pull down and it has two cupholders (they're covered by the protective rubber mat which you can peel back). 15:52 It's a 9" touch-screen you've got there with the optional £450 JBL Premium Sound System pack -- *Trust me*
Really helpful review which focused on the elements that are important to me. The Yaris Cross was on my shortlist and I think this has helped me make up my mind that this is going to be my next car.
Excellent review thank you. I took delivery of mine two weeks ago (AWD version) with top spec. Absolutely love it and agree with the review. I managed 72 mpg on a 24 mile run and my tank average is around 58. 👍🏻
Instruction book is useful when out in the sticks with no phone signal and/or in the middle of Europe. Not everyone just wanders around town so a decent spare wheel is also useful.
Good review - thanks. I am planning to test drive this car. Problem is there is a long waiting list and no discounts available. But 60mpg around town is simply amazing.
You can get a discount! I got one by going to a couple of dealerships at the end of the day/month. One was very unhelpful but the other got me a great deal :)
With the 18 inch alloys, black contrast roof, heated seats, under-runs, seat-back pockets and rubber boot protection that looks like Dynamic grade to me. Touch screen is 9 inch (Smart Connect), not 8 inch (Touch 2). Rear seat is a 40:20:40, only the entry Icon is 60:40. Rear cup holders are in the central pull down under the rubber protector. Roadside assistance is 1 year, not 3 years. Dynamic is now top of the range and costs an extra £2325 more than the Design. The Premiere launch spec has been discontinued.
Yes, it's a Dynamic. I regard Excel as the top model based on price and the number of features as standard. See the brochure and the number of ticked boxes. The reason I rejected the Excel was the horrible taupe (brown) colour of the seat fabric and plastic.
@@daxx10 Only Dynamic gets the bi-tone paint and AWD option though. In the brochure it goes Icon > Design > Excel > Dynamic > Premiere. The now discontinued Premiere was Dynamic + HUD, leather & power tailgate.
I had a Ford Puma ST-Line X Automatic never gave me any problems 😊 I changed it for a Toyota Yaris Cross Excel with the City Pack with many extra safety features 😊😊 very happy that I've changed to a Hybrid Car.
At around 10:20 you said there's no armrest or cup holder...but in my model the center of the back rest folds down to be an armrest and dual cupholder. So I guess the feature was added in later models with electronic seat adjustments.
The rear does have a centre armrest with 2 cup holders and the driver armrest also lifts up to provide some storage as well. It is missing a USB in the rear. I love mine having upgraded from a normal Yaris.
Yes My next car...it will arrive in the summer...if i'm lucky 😎...but you dont need the extra wheel. All you have to do is call Help service....it's in my leasing deal 😎
defiantly a dynamic model, not design.....we just bought one..... we added the advanced safety pack which includes blind spot monitoring mirrors, intelligent front and rear parking sensors and rear cross traffic alert..... all what Leigh says below is correct..... also very important B mode is only for going down steep gradients where it gives increased engine braking for safety..... you do not use B mode in normal driving.... it doesn't put more power into the battery
Correct. It's a DYNAMIC. *"Trust me!"* ;) Five stripes on the seat fabric and the design of the alloys are the giveaways. Had one on order since January
Yep, fuel efficiency is actually lower when driving in B mode. The AWD model includes an additional separate button for Downhill Assist Control. I'm guessing it uses the rear motor to apply additional resistance.
Wonder why people keep saying that the B mode is maximum regeneration? B mode is engine braking. When the b mode is active the engine is used to slow down the vehicle. It is NOT about regeneration of the battery. Maximum regeneration is achieved with the braking pedal.
i have been to my local toyota and a test drive of the Yaris cross it is really good drive and i was going to buy one but i was told that there is not a space saver wheel to fit this car the 17inch for the 21 reg will not fit 22 reg do you now why
I didn't want to wait, so I got a demonstration car with 2000 km on it for 4000k less than a new one. Exactly the configuration I wanted. Also glad I got the current one, as the new version will have more power and slighty upgraded interior, which is usless for me and will definitely increase the price.
You mentioned no arm rest in the back, there is a double cup holder and arm rest between the two back seats, you have to pull the middle seat down. I have the design trim and have no heated front seats or jbl sound or drop down floor panels in the boot, no satnav either maybe my design isn't right or this trim has added packs? 🤔
The Designyou tested has alloy wheels asextras. Please get specs accurate. Ifound the cvt much more raucous than a1.8prius, at start up and when accelerating. You suggestcwe go for therubber mats. I agree, but dog wants lower flloor for more space and rubber matdoes not fit!
Going downhill for long distances in a HEV can be problematic. After a while the battery gets fully charged. After that, the regular braking system is used. Problem starts when we're using the brakes and the engine is off. It wears very rapidly the braking system. To avoid this, Toyota uses electronics to activate the engine in those situations. Additionally, the driver can engage the b mode and force the engine to slow down the car. That said (I have a Yaris hybrid) and I can tell you that the b mode is almost unusable. When going downhill with the full battery, engaging the b mode makes the engine to rev up brutally. It is almost impossible to drive under these conditions. Solution is to go back to D mode and use the brakes. Toyota may have an explanation for this, but it is super annoying.
You use it when descending steep inclines to take the pressure off the brakes. It spins the engine without fuel usage to give you a similar experience to downshifting a traditional manual gearbox. I have never used B mode in the 6 years I have owned my Prius. It does not improve regeneration.
Had mine since June and just tried to get the seats down but not flush, any advice if doing something wrong? Needing it to be as flat as possible. Any advice much appreciated
Can't believe somebody can review cars when they know nothing about them! Toyota's CVT is an eCVT - not a belt in sight, and B on the drive selector is for when you need engine braking on a steep downhill section, not for regen.....
Sorry another car reviewer who says you don’t need Sat Nav, use apple car play. NO if you live in Devon & Cornwall it is useless due to no phone signal. Only 1 USB socket in the whole of the car & that is not next to shelf for the phone. So you have to have lead draped down to the socket. Why is there no wireless charging mat. If you have the Panoramic roof you cannot have a spare wheel.

Please anyone who watched this please do your homework and don’t rely on the false information given in this review. Trust me I am a Toyota man through and through.
@charlesedwards4160 I believe the car sits 95mm higher, not 25mm, as he said. You also don't get 18" wheels with the Design. That model comes with 17", unless you pay more for the largest.
This car is well overpriced going for £26000 used and for what? Don't get ripped off! Whats wrong with Toyota? Why don't they make their rear doors open properly only halfway😢
apparently it's something like with Volvo, Volvo is known to be so safe that there's a joke that when it was tested the dummy came out in a better condition. While Toyota statistically breaks down so much less than other cars that there's a joke that when you buy a Toyota you marry her. Both are much more expensive than they look. But apparently with equal care and mileage if you had the car for a long time you'd spend much much more on the Arkana, enough to make the Yaris as cheaper as it looks for you. And you'd give up on your Renault and pronounce it dead in 18 years if everything went perfectly. While you'll be driving your Toyota forever

B mode on Toyota hybrids means engine braking for severe downhill gradients only it does NOT increase regen.
That is correct and in actual fact B mode increases fuel consumption and disables the option to use Cruise Control
Why does everyone get this wrong 🤦♂️
Thanks Mike. No one has ever explained this to me. I never use B mode. But on my 2nd toyota hybrid and never had any idea!!
@@DrLisaDeG I think it’s really meant for drivers in the Alps and such. I’m the UK it’s very unlikely you’d ever have to use it.
