The V5 5500 will always be my favorite card from 3dfx. The V4 is interesting, but if you thought the price was a bit high back in the day, the price NOW on the collector's market is insane, and definitely not justifiable IMO. Great video btw! You've done SO much to support #GPUJune and I am very grateful for your work!
Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The V4 is strange at this point, it's almost like a gourmet video card, it has special sauce (glide) but it's not that great. Of course I like it, but it shouldn't be expensive for what it is. This month was a lot of work but I'm happy to be part of it! Count on me for future events, I'll do my best to participate. Thanks for starting all this.
Funy thing about Voodoo 5 5500 - it was doomed to be short-lived card anyway. 3dfx planned to update VSA-100 architecture few months after V5 5500 relase anyway. The same thing happened to original Geforce 256 - once Geforce 2 was relased, it was superior in any way. So there was no reason to keep Geforce 256 on life support, despite the fact it was doing well until like 2004. With Voodoo 5 5500 relased in late 1999, we could expect Daytona powered update in spring 2000 to compete with Geforce 2 and Rampage as first 3dfx T&L option with both Pixel and Vertex shaders.
@@TurboMMaster yeah, VSA was a bit late to the party. It was a worthy opponent to Nvidia but for sure it was more of a filler before the next thing, since it was so late.
It was interesting how 3dfx planned to use SLI in their Rampage chip, suggesting that was not only a filler product, but also their experiment with using SLI on single card. Interesting trivia about Serious Sam: It was one of a few last video games designed with 3dfx cards in mind. It shows how important proper optimalisation for Voodoo cards were.
@@SUCRA Propably not so different actually. The reason why Nvidia was so succesful was cause they offered what players wanted at a time. The only way for 3dfx for survive was to be more like Nvidia. Personally I blame terrible deal with STB aquisition and doing to many things at once. They had to compete with pretty much everyone and couldn't focus on their flagships to relase them soon enough.
Its nice to see that good scaling with Voodoo 5 when supported, imagine drivers would be even better if 3D fix lasted. Yeah when nVidia bought 3d fix it was kind of surprising for me back in days. But nowadays if you look closely the writings were all over the place. Nice collection of Voodoo you have there, and thanks for video.
LOLOL nice closing there! Unless one of these cards appear inside a e-waste machine I can't imagine myself paying current prices... I'm still saving for my Orpheus... The "newly designed" VooDoo cards with NOS VSA chips look as tasty as out of my reach!
Oh man, I would love to have one of those newly made voodoos. Yeah, I agree though, prices for the vintage video cards are off the charts, I was lucky with the ones I have, looking constantly the last few years I was able to get them for decent prices. Thanks for watching!
Hey man! Nice to hear from you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. #GpuJune was a lot more work than what I anticipated, but it was fun, I think I got some cool stuff out there for it. Have a great weekend!
Epic GPUs and an epic way to close out your entries. Fascinating cards really i never got a chance to experience myself so this was great! And yes good point about Star Wars titles and music haha.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Rik! It was cool revisiting them, I'm always a bit restless using the voodoo 5, I don't want it to break haha. The voodoo 4 seems more solid to me, and it never crashed, the voodoo 5 crashed once, hopefully it was something with synchronization. I'm probably building a system for it to stay in permanently so I can stream from it as well. Thanks for watching!
Nice one, Sucra! I remember choosing between the V4 4500 and the GF 2 MX. Ended up with an Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2 MX. It was my second video card ever. Congrats again on the video!
You made a great choice. I was a 3dfx fan from the beginning though, my first 3d accelerator was a voodoo 2. Then a V3, and when the V5 came out man, I had to have it. I questioned my self if it was the better choice, obviously not in retrospect, but hindsight, you know how that goes haha. Thanks for watching, have a great weekend!
another great video! love hearing your trivia and thoughts on the games, makes the video feel more personal and entertaining. I skipped these cards back in the day, i went from the voodoo 3 straight to the Geforce 3, loved both cards very much! I have a V5 now and planning to build a period accurate PC around it. Question: whats that cool vice gadget you used early in the video to hold up the V4? seems very handy! Great channel keep up the good work!
Thanks, man! I'm glad you enjoy it. I skipped the Voodoo 4, but I had a Voodoo 5 on release. I remember getting it as a Christmas present. I considered the Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS at the time, but I remember it being out my price range. I'm glad you were able to get a Voodoo 5, I want to build a new system for mine as well. Hey, to answer your question, I think you're talking about the Voodoo PCI, with the black PCB. That is a PCB holder so that you can work on them. Not a particularly good one, but it served well enough for that shot. Cheers, thanks for your support!
@@SUCRA Thanks for the follow up. Yeah I was interested in that vice, i will have to get one for recapping video cards. I had gotten the V3 when that came out in 1999 so i stayed without an upgrade until was able to self build a new PC in 2001. SO much happened in those 2 years when you think about it. Thanks for sharing your experience!
The rival of the V5 was the Geforce 2 GTS and that of the V4 was the Geforce 2 MX. A similar comparison video with those cards would be very interesting.
Yeah, I thought about buying the GF2 GTS when I bought my original v5 in the year 2000, but it was more expensive at stores, maybe the v5 had already had a mark down. I do want to make those videos, with the v4 vs the MX might be easier because the GF2 GTS is a bit expensive and hard to find, the pure MX is not that easy either, but there are a bit more. I don't have any of them right now.
Oof, right in the jealousy, twice. Really enjoyed that, haven't actually seen a head to head. Good scaling for the V5. I'm impressed with its Serious Sam performance.
Excellent video. In Deus Ex and all Unreal-engine games it is much better to use the timedemo 1 command instead of stat fps because the numbers are much bigger and easier to see and also the minimum and maximum fps is also shown.
The Voodoo5 always takes advantage of the second GPU as each GPU renders one line on the screen separately. There is no SLI profile or anything else needed like on todays Nivida cards or former crossfire solutions. The only way to disable SLI is to force one chip rendering in the driver menu. If the fps scores between the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 are almost identical, it is a sign that the AGP1x interface of the Voodoo5 became the bottleneck in here. If you reduce the texturequality in Jedi Outcast the fps will increase as the AGP interface will not hold the Voodoo5 back anymore. You can also push this bottleneck in more modern games with large textures to the extreme when the Voodoo4 overthrones the Voodoo5.
The V4 4500 was overall slower than its main rival the GF2MX by some 10-30% but its price was 179 $ compared to 130-150$ for a GF 2MX. Almost everyone puchased the GF2MX and ignored the V4 4500. The result was a disaster for 3dfx.
True, the v4 was a bit late to the party. Apparently there were delays on developement. If they had put that out earlier it might have been different. Also because Glide was still a thing, and personally at the time I was one that still wanted to use Glide.
Thanks man! I watched your repair video and thought it was very instructive. Unfortunately the comment section wasn't loading and I couldn't comment over there, but I'll try again later.
