@@adrianalicea6704 I remember in the days long ago, when the land was young, I would walk through great woods, and large plains of land. the song strikes me as thankfulness to God for peace as a result of war. a yearning for peace, even. in a way, I think it comes off stronger in the modern era, where the mechanisms and machines of war, both psychological and physical are far beyond our comprehension.
It is possible that the player piano version might not be playable by hand. Look at the spread on the keyboard at many points. These rolls were recorded by special mechanical piano machinery. The performer would often stop and add notes they could not get with their hands.

The lyrics are so beautiful. I have always loved this hymn. Growing up in neutral Colorado where we just love God and America, then I moved to the south and people are all up-in-arms against this song! It's so frustrating. Aren't the God-glorifying lyrics more important than whatever cultural implications the song might have? I still love Dixie Land, can't I love this song too, just for what it is? It's just a good hymn. Hope southern Christians will understand why I love this hymn and not try to force me to associate it with the war history like they do.
Super late to this but I doubt it'd be Grant. Apparently the man was hopelessly tone deaf. It was said of him that "He only knew two songs: Yankee Doodle and Not Yankee Doodle" lol
Hi, Nate, I would like to ask for permission to use this soundtrack in the COP Group evangelical program. It will be used as an accompaniment for singing in Chinese lyrics. A reply will be much appreciated.
That sounds wonderful. The music is not copyrighted as it was written in the mid-to-late 1800s. No issue from me personally to use the recording as your accompaniment! Please share a link sometime if you end up making a video! Thanks for asking. Also sorry the piano is out of tune in my video, but hopefully it's what you're looking for in your accompaniment.
I dislike Play-Rite because the rolls aren't very nicely punched (ragged chords because of some unevenness in the perforators) but I have to admit some of the arrangements are pretty awesome!
Elements were taken from the German folk song “Im Wald im grünen wälde” and “John Brown’s body”. Which isn’t surprising considering most of the classically liberal German nationalists and German immigrants in general fled to the US in the 1850s/1860s after the failed 1848 coup, just in time for the American Civil War. Also most of those Germans were abolitionists and vehemently anti-slavery so one of those German 48’ers probably gave American abolitionists and Julia Ward Howe the tune.
