    Man, I would love to start my day in my bedroom at 9:00, take an hour lunch break, an hour trip to the market, and half an hour of personal learning, then finish at 4:00 and say I worked 8 hours, lol.

    Thanks Sarah for walking through your day as a software engineer. Very insightful especially for folks who aren't in the software/tech industry.
    I noticed that you are taking a course to eventually move into a management role (project manager) from SDE.
    I can also maybe suggest considering one more role which is the product manager role as I noticed you like to use your creative side (from journalism). My understanding is that product is more creative/strategic (answers the "what to build & why") and project/program is more operational (answers the "how to build").

    Some comments says they want to be a software engineer. It may be because this video shows the benefit of working from home, but acutlly I think where you can work properly depends on your personality.
    As an employee, I am not use to working from home for many days. Sometimes I can't reply urgent messages instantly because I am away from my computer and it may let my colleagues think I am being lazy. That makes me feel nervous.
    But as a software engineer, I can experience your perspective. Sometimes I would get stuck on implementing codes, and at that moment, I really need a quiet environment for taking a rest and relaxing my brain. It often really works in helping me solve my problems.

    So she worked 9 - 4, took a lunch break, and ran a personal errand? And then logged 8 hrs of work? Am I missing something?
    Not judging, just curious if working in tech is that relaxed..!?

    • @vangarrd
      @vangarrd 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It is most certainly not that relaxed, typically. She should have put in an extra 1.5-2 hours at the end of the day to make up for lunch and the grocery trip.
      Logging of hours is a bit unusual in the tech industry, unless you're a contractor. It's usually based on output (getting your stuff done), which gives a large leeway of flexibility about how/when you do that. But, for many enterprise tech companies, those demands on output are aggressive and software engineers are frequently 'under the gun'.

    So is Java still widely used? I see tons of companies in Indeed, Glassdoor, Linkedin ask for this on top of C# and .NET.
    You mentioned Reddit, and the subreddits advised to stay away from Java... but, it's hard to avoid that I think. Doesn't make sense, unless it's just internet kids not knowing what they're talking about.
    Also you say you use HTML and CSS? So are you frontend as well?
    Sorry for the questions, thanks!

    • @rafanliyakkathkhan7377

      Tbh java and python were pretty abundantly used in recent years. C, C# and C++ came above these 2 all of a sudden in terms of popularity this year. Don't know why or how but... It is what it is.
      I will not recommend Java to a beginner. But if you kicked off your programming journey with python or c and fluent with either of them, you can try Java. That's what I did
