      This could be awesome for guys that road race heavy Mustangs like Terminator Cobras and GT500s(and the S550 and up for that matter), they tend to crank the power up some in those cars(since it's so damn easy), throw BIG sticky tires on them, and slaughter big sweepers at high speed tracks - it isn't uncommon to overheat the diff and squirt gear oil out the breather(which is why you should have a diff catch can if you don't run a diff cooler). I think something like this could potentially keep those diffs cool without the need for a complete diff cooler setup with an electric pump and radiator.

    When I was looking for a new pickup in 2017 I read a lot about failed Ford differentials. I am now willing to bet that the people suffering those failures were running a flatback. My best friend and I discussed this on and off over the years and I talked him out of putting one on his first generation Dodge that he still has with over 350,000 miles on it. The discussion always came back to how does the oil get to the front pinion bearing.

      I have a LM2 myself and if I weren’t moving to a 2500 I’d be very interested in a Banks diff cover too. My best guess is to do some homework and take measurements to see if you can swap the whole axle for one with the same ratio and lug pattern but a 14 bolt rear like a 2500. Probably tougher to do than I think it is. But I’m working on a buddy’s 2000 K3500 and swapping the rear axle for one out of a 2020 Chevy Express 3500 van. Same lug pattern 8x6.5” but disc brakes, higher gearing (3.42) and way less rust. Not a solution for everyone I know but a possibility if it matters that much to you

    I have a Poniac/Olds 9.3 rear. I am going to be using 4.10:1 ring and pinion. I have been toying with the idea of drilling a hole slightly below the axle centerline in the axle housing behind the ring gear and running a tube to an aluminum cooler and then dumping it back into the top of the housing with a tube then is welded at an angle towarde the top of the ring gear. It should help at steady speeds and possibly for the strip although it may not be efficient if the location is out of the air stream. I don't want it to get broken off unknowingly. I got the idea after watching the first series on how differential oil is circulated and Gale Banks told the truth about the awful differential covers. My 9.3 is all steel and with no removable cover, old school, dependable.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are pump and cooler setups you can buy. But unless you track the car, a large differential like that pushing around a car will probably be a waste of time. You could install a temp gauge in the differential housing to see if it is even getting warm before you take any drastic measures.

    • @4speed3pedals
      @4speed3pedals 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@geoffmooregmHave you done this previously? On what do you base your premise that it is a waste of time? I have temp sensors I will install in the transmission and the differential (different scales). I also run Amsoil Severe Gear Synthetic oil which aids in lowering the temperature. I have not checked into tumble polishing gears but that also reduces friction.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @4speed3pedals I didn't say it was a waste of time. I said you don't want to waste your time, and money for that matter. But you should make sure (by checking temperatures) it won't be a waste of time. Oil, too cold, is almost as bad as oil that is too hot. So, just be sure these mods will be beneficial. Just street driving or drag racing a car will never heat the oil enough to be problematic. Track racing and heavy (relative to axle size) towing will heat the oil. Possibly enough to require a cooler.

    • @4speed3pedals
      @4speed3pedals 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@geoffmooregmI agree with you but with a low ratio such as a 4.88 or more, it may be something to consider after knowing the temps. Pontiac is fortunate with the fill plug being 1/2" pips so the only need is to run the wires. Plumbing I am thinking would be easy for a self pumping cooler. If ineffective it would be easy to plug. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @4speed3pedals Yes, absolutely. Get that sensor in there and give the car a good hard run and see what happens.
      I have already added a bung to my oil pan in my old Trooper. I had to eliminate the stock cooler because it was leaking badly, and you can't buy one anymore. Everyone says it's not needed, but I do a lot of off-roading and work the engine hard with very little forward movement. So I am going to install a sensor to see what the oil temps are getting too and under what kind of conditions. Who knows, I may need a cooler, too

    Why do we just let the Exhaust flow into the air? Is there really no way to capter it or treat via filter on the back of the Vehicle a fan plus treatment device?

      We do actually filter exhaust that way. You've just described the catalytic converter, diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter, and selective catalytic reduction systems.

    Man I wish you guys did more gas stuff. I love this channel and plan on buying products for my diesel in the future. But I really wish you guys did more gasoline engine stuff. Anymore the market for classic cars and most of the overall gas engine market is dominated by Holley. They just keep buying up brands and I feel like as time passes the quality is just falling off.
    If instantly buy a Banks Efi set up if it were on the market. Something similar to Holleys sniper system. I just installed one on my classic truck and have been fighting with it to keep it running properly. Had a dead sensor straight out the box, then a failed relay, now fighting issues with a stalling I suspect to be injector related. All within the first 100 miles. I just want to buy well made products that last. Is that so much to ask for?

    Less oil capacity is not a good thing. Oil will wear faster.
    If oil is running colder, in cold climates, viscosity should be modified.

    Not so sure I'm happy with 4 less quarts of diff oil in this cover. Also, if off roading an get a lot of mud and debris shoved in those ram air cooling inlets and fins you will loose the cooling, (with less fluid).

    • @bankspower
      @bankspower  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the Ram-Air scoops collect any mud or debris, simply hose them out. Our patented Ram-Air scoops are designed to increase airflow over the rear differential without sacrificing ground clearance. In fact, our differential cover retains the same low point as factory and competitors. Even if the scoops were to be caught on on something, the Ram-air scoops have built-in break away point prevents damage if scoop is snagged.
      Regarding fluid capacity, simply adding more fluid does not help cool the gears. Yes, it may take a little longer for the larger amount of fluid to heat up, but just like the ocean, it retains that heat and takes longer to cool down. The Banks cover retains the stock fluid capacity and uses increased surface area to reject heat from the fluid to the outside of the cover and ultimately to the atmosphere. It's 5X more effective than high-capacity covers.
