  • This video shows step by step how to use stencils in metal embossing. See how one stencil can create different effects by placing it on the front or the back of the metal. I discuss the essential tools needed as well as other tips on working with stencils.

Love it! Question if you don't mind, do you only use a soft surface underneath for higher relief designs? BC I thought i had to, to get any effect & have had trouble with warping, stretching too much, tearing, etc. Thankyou, I love your work & detailed videos!

Jenna, thank you for your kind words, and I'm glad to see you like the detailed videos. Yes and no, it all depends on the project. However, soft surfaces are primarily used for higher relief designs. When using soft surfaces with refining and stencils, you will get warping. Embossing is also done using a soft surface, but when the soft surface is too "thick," you will get warping and stretching. When pushing the metal through the stencil from the back, on a hard surface, the design will be raised the height of the thickness of the stencil. I hope this answers your question 😊 There is a video on the Basics - Metal Embossing // Pewter Art Playlist where I discuss the uses of the different surfaces you can check out if you haven't already.
