Very useful. Am working on my 3rd video right now. Using Resolve Studio 18. I'll try proxies and I really like your ideas about color coding and using blank renamed adjustment clips to label different parts of the dialog. That approach will work for video clips too, I'll add another level to my workspace template and use that idea there. Thanks!

Had to pause and comment early (4:11) to let you know how much I appreciated seeing the Proxy vs Full-Res editing responsiveness comparison. Was really wondering about how much diff it makes and the demo is worth 1K words! Probably 1K seconds of edit time too. Thanks for that. Okay, watched the rest of this video and it is outstanding! Yes, that's what I want to learn to do and with that excellent workflow. I will be in your training as soon as I can knock a few other gotta-do's off my list. Thanks for posting this helpful info.

(I use an M1 Mac mini to Edit videos) I keep having issues whenever I try to sync up clips using audio (even when they have the exact same audio), it means that I have to manually align my clips every time, which is a massive headache when I'm dealing with over an hour of footage with 3 cameras that need to be aligned.
I found one useful video that helped a lot by showing how to change your timeline to 1080p for editing, then change it back to 4K before you render.
I used to always edit in Sony Vegas, and I was probably 10x faster editing in that than I am editing in Davinci Resolve. In Sony Vegas I used the Media Generator a lot for text, graphics, overlays and animations, but I can't figure it out on Resolve.
The things I really need to figure out are: Time aligning multiple clips, creating a Multicam clip, colour grading/matching different camera angles and figuring out where everything is in Resolve.

Casey: What DR really needs for us less talented / wannabe or newbees is an addon that when one hovers over an Icon or a menu Item and say hits TAB + F1 the definition for that Icon or menu Item appears with a sample of how it is used / accomplished. and maybe where it appears in the Davinci manual found under HELP . Premiere had this up until the PRO series. That and the exorbitant fees is why I now use DR STUDIO. OH I forgot to complement you on another great tutorial Bro.

Hey Casey, first off thanks for your channel which is invaluable for me as I'm trying to switch from FCP to Da Vinci resolve...
I have a very important question for you. In FCP, I'm used to being able to mark multiple in/out points in a single clip and give them different keywords. I can't seem to find a way to do this in Resolve.
In FCPX you can set multiple in/out points for each clip in the browser, which automatically creates a bin. After setting a range with I and O, Cmdl-k will bring up the keyword dialog and you can enter keywords for that specific range. You can then continue to do this as many times as you'd like within that single clip. It makes it extremely easy to break down a clip into its component (keyworded) parts, and therefore the entire process of logging/keywording goes much faster.
It's extremely useful for long takes or interviews. Imagine a 1h clip of a talking head, and there is specific 5 min portion where the interviewee, Bill, speaks about his mother. You set your in and outs, place the keyword MOTHER and then, once you click the new "bin" called MOTHER that has been created, the browser will show you ONLY that 5 min section of the 1h interview that you have marked.
Even better,; if the Bill happens to refer to his mother at several different times during the interview, just set several IN and OUT point, add the keyword, and when you click again on the MOTHER "bin" in the browser, FCP will show you a series of separate thumbnails corresponding to the sections that you have marked with the keyword.
Of course all those thumbnails have the same file name, because they are not physically different clips, but parts of the 1h long interview clip, but FCP shows it by hiding the rest of the untagged footage. Just amazing once you have tried it.
You can even go a step further... Imagine that you have a second 45min interview, of John, the brother of the Bill who also refers to his mother. If you place keywords at some sections of John's interview, of course once you click on your MOTHER's bin in the browser, it will now displays both Bill and John's soundbites about their mother. If you would like to see only Bill's statements about his mother, you could use a smart bin. You would say to the smart bin that only want to see clips that :
    1. Contains the filename of Bill's interview clip
    2. Have the keyword MOTHER assigned.
And bang, FCP only isolates the sections of Bill talking about his mother.
FCPX also has good support for keyboard commands in this process and you never have to use the mouse, including going from clip to clip, range to range, etc.
I'm a documentary filmmaker, dealing with big amounts of footage, long takes, long interviews... and therefore the logging process is absolutely key to get organised and speed up the editing process. Without this functionality, and given the incredibly extensive keywording I do on every project, it makes Resolve very very clunky for preparing a project for editing.
Do you have any solution to emulate this functionality in Resolve?
Thanks! Hopefully you see this among your thousands of comments and emails you must receive.
    Keep up the amazing job.

Hi Casey, great content as always! Just wanna know what's the best way of mixing different fps clips in a timeline without any clip becoming choppy and getting an output of the lowest fps. I've tried separating different fps in different timelines and combining the different fps timelines in the output one, but still getting choppy results, whether its set to 24/25fps or 60fps timeline. And I can't really slow down all the 60fps footage to 40% either as its used for slowmo speed ramping. Any advice is much appreciated.

I have a question regarding the audio sync. How did you dialogue track sync with the game recording? In order for the audio sync to work, wouldn't the dialogue track also have to have the game audio being recorded as well? I'm a bit confused on this in order to properly get the audio sync to work in davinci resolve.

Thanks Casey, thanks for your work and willingness to share your skills. I have a question on importing clips into Resolve 18. I shot video footage at 24 fps, MP4 and used H265 codec. When I brought the clips directly into Resolve I got the 'Media Offline' message - the clips hadn't been moved, so I knew there was something else going on. I finally used HandBrake to convert them to H264 and they loaded properly. I would like to take advantage of H265, just not sure why there was an issue importing them? Any/all advice is greatly appreciated -

Are you on the free version or the paid Studio version? The Studio version will take H.265 10-bit (eg off my DJI Mini 3 Pro drone) but the free version won't - just got the "Media Offline" messages you describe. It was the nudge I needed to upgrade to the paid version. Absolutely no regrets.

Having a horrible time trying to tackle project management, backup, archival, etc. I keep creating projects, completing them, then filling my hard drive. I then try to back stuff up by my head is spinning. With Vegas, where I cam from before resolve, I just copied the project folder to a backup drive and DONE. There's SO much extra "stuff" to mind with this database driven project management. A tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

    • @CaseyFaris
      @CaseyFaris  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I’m about to make everything easier for ya..
When you’re done with a project, right click on the project in the project manager and “export project”
Put that on your external drive with your media and you’re good to go.
You can also right click the project in the project manager and select “export project archive”. And it’ll bundle the media with it in one file.
Don’t worry about the database thing, just export the project itself just like you would “save-as” in Vegas days.
      You got this!
