I remember my sister telling me that part of her training as “check in” on a Middle East airline, was to assess a passengers height and if they were over 6ft 4 and looked fit and healthy they would prioritise them for an emergency exit seat with leg room.
I got placed on a seat near the wing with extra legroom as you say, she said to me in the event of the plane crashing into the sea you can help guide people onto the wing, I thought that was so assuring...

Watching long distance flying vids reminds me how shattering air travel really is.
My local airport Shannon in Ireland has advanced security scanners since 2021. Carrying of liquids are no longer banned and you don’t have to unpack your bags. The airport lives up to its advertising slogan It’s Easier at Shannon.

We’ve travelled from Manchester for the last 4 major trips and we live closer to Birmingham. Manchester airport is worth the extra effort for us. And security was so quick for us back in August for the 5 of us traveling it was less than 10 minutes. Awesome airport.

October 2023 at Manchester airport, we had to remove all watches, jewellery, metal belts, coins etc. The only metal that was not required to removed and placed in a tray was a wedding ring and a hip replacement.
The reason you had a better security experience was because the UK Airports are upgrading their security screening and equipping checking areas with new technology that allows you to keep liquids and electronics in your bags, and also removes the 100 ml/plastic bag limit (new limit is 2 Liters I think). If I'm not wrong, Manchester, Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted will complete this process early next year due to delays. Look forward to seeing the new changes. Nice video!

We went I think on the same plane you came back on, to Orlando on Boxing Day. Plane was dirty, seat headrests fell off, 2 of our 4 screens would not work, and food was inedible. On the positive side, the staff seemed decent (and rather embarrassed by the poor state of their ‘tools’ given to work) and the plane got us there on time.
Ryanair planes are in much better nick.
Flew Jet Blue a few months ago, JFK to Denver, their planes are on a different level in economy, and the free wifi can even stream TH-cam in 4K. Also loads of leg room, proper plugs, and free snacks.
I got the Escape lounges for free when I had my Amex Gold card. Used them when heading to the Caribbean on many occasions, they are so nice and take a lot of the stress out of the airport experience. Even though I don't have Amex anymore, I would still pay the extra £34 as you go on a nice big holiday very rarely, and what's £34 when your spending £3000 on a holiday. All food and drink included. I've advise you to make your own doggy bag in the Escape lounge and bang it in your hand luggage because their foods far superior to what you get on the plane. Who can say no to bacon and sausage butties? :D

I think the problem with moving stairs is the height of each step is just like an escalator which I slightly higher than a normal staircase. There is a formula that defines the height that was introduced in Victorian times to stop house maids and other staff from falling down the staircase to reduce accidents.

I live in North Carolina, originally from Wales, no supermarket liquor in this state, we have to buy liquor from the State run ABC stores, and I'm certain prices are cheaper here than in the Duty Free store there! Enjoy your trip

The food looked sub standard, but you ate it all. I thought Virgin were a premium airline, but doesn't look the case. It's a bit weird to leave in the afternoon and arrive the same day late afternoon. I would say that would stuff up the old body clock.

I don’t use airports very often, but have always found them pretty hassle free. I’m 53 & undemanding. They’re a means to an end. Get on the plane & arrive at your destination safely is all I care about. I enjoy the rush of taking off, but after that it can be pretty boring unless you have a window seat & something to look at.

25:50 Just airborne. I hate flying. If I never flew again, it would be too soon. The whole business of arriving at the airport, dropping off baggage, going through security, the long walk (often) to the departure gate, walking down the final tunnel (the tunnel of doom), finding one's seat, stowing small hand luggage. I loathe every part. Curiously, the best part is when the plane stands stationary on the runway for a few seconds before the engines are throttled up to max and one gets a kick in the back as the plane accelerates. It always seems to take ages for the plane to reach V1 and I always think we're going to run out of runway.
And then there's the landing...

We had this new scanner at Heathrow over Christmas, seems to be cutting security lines which is fantastic
Flying to sunny Tenerife in May from Manchester (usually LBA) from T2 aswell, so hope security is nice and smooth and straight through.
Lee we flew to Tenerife for New Year from Glasgow Prestwick time from drop off by the taxi to departure lounge 7.5 minutes included luggage drop and security.Mind you it’s a small airport but still brilliant

£95 for a taxi! when i use the airports i drive as close as possible then park in a side street that is unrestricted, then get the bus to the terminal for a few quid, job done and save loads of money.
Another issue I would have is the 8 hours in an airplane seat. The longest trip I made was from Toulouse to Heathrow.

We’ve always used Virgin Atlantic whenever possible and the food has been woeful since they started out of Manchester back in ‘97 (?). We feed up at the airport. One year we were next to the flight crew in Burger King and the cabin crew walked past and suddenly stopped. The cabin crew asked the flight crew what they were playing at, and they responded that they can’t eat the rubbish they provide ! Have a great break and keep the vids coming. 👍👍
That new security system at Manchester is what ALL UK airports have been told to bring in (need new scanners).
Some smaller airports had already beat Manchester to it, some others are dragging their heels making excuses that buildings need strengthening to cope.
When I flew from Manchester last year it was the worst for security systems of any of the 5 airports I used and had to take all electrical items out .. the other airports abroad were a lot better .. the UK ones just catching up... at last.
Have a great time. Manchester looks like a great airport,I hate security ,take shoes off,belts off,and iPads out of your bag. That Manchester security was a breeze. No stress.

Quick question Lee as you are a regular flier do you find the bigger planes like the one you flew on you feel less turbulence than say a a 737 or a321 to lanzarote etc as a nervous flier myself and always wanted to do america but couldn't stand 8 hours of bumping and banging. Thx

Psst….a bit off topic but what are your views on Hertz USA dumping 20,000 Teslas on the second hand market because of the cost of servicing and repairs. It turns out after all that petrol and diesel are more economical and profitable.

Bit of brain confusion on stalled escalators but I also think that the actual steps are steeper and taller than regular old concrete or wood stairs.

I have flown economy a few times with Virgin Atlantic to Orlando Florida, on both a 747 and the newer Dreamliner aircraft. Must say its not too bad only thing I didn't like was being in the rear part of the plane especially in turbulence and on your first time travelling back to the UK.

Well you certainly had a different experience to me at Manchester, I flew to jfk (Air lingus), 4th Dec 2023, the airport was busy, shoes off, belt of, watch off, pockets empty, all laptops and ipad out, all cameras out. It was manic, totally disorganised. They even put my tray to be checked, kept me waiting 20mins then changed their minds and just gave me my stuff back. So I cant sayI was impressed to be honest. Stayed 48th Street corner of 8th avenue, in times Square. Found new York, loud, car horns blasting, couldn't move for people and altogether hugely expensive. But complainng over it was good break, was they when they lit the tree at Rockerfeller centre and went to top of that as well as the boat trip round statue, of course we had a coffee in Central Station and got the subway (an experience) to Brooklyn, came back shattered.
My partner use to fly to China twice a year with Virgin ... I think he flew business class though... He spent the whole trip drinking free red wine 🤣

I've done this flight around 4/5 time ,wheelie case,small backpack,usually £350-£399 return,cheap basic,get what you pay for,now,the best deal is. Aer Lingus ,Manchester to NYC via Dublin, then pre immigration check in Dublin,walk off the plane,no que straight to the airtrain to sufferts ave,all for £330,the return flight I had was jfk-manchester,😊
I have never ever seen Manchester Airport so quiet! You were extremely lucky. Plus security. Took me an hour last year. They removed all my inhalers searching for drugs.

flew virgin from heathrow to LA back in the day it was an awesome flight flew again from Atlanta GA to Heathrow was absolutely crap like BA gone down hill big time
The Ford Mondeo has always been the best car for driver enjoyment, luggage capacity, reliability, servicing and value.
Sadly, Ford have discontinued it due to everybody wanting SUV's.
I agree had three Mondeos 2 diesel and one petrol. Fast economical capable of 130 mph.
