Vai is the Wild-card here. His presence brings intrigue and spice that we wouldn't get if Carey was the only change from that original lineup.

Steve Vai’s presence is somewhat concerning to me actually. He has a tendency to go off the deep end with too much flair, which Belew already has covered. King Krimson needs structure above all else, and that is precisely what Fripp brought. Danny Carey will make anything sound amazing, but also has a tendency to be a little too humble…which could open the door for Vai to walk all over everything. It could be seriously amazing though…I just hope Vai keeps a lid on the fluff and sticks to the material.

So... it's the mid 80s and I'm in college and living in a co-op type of place and I buy (I have no recollection why) the album Discipline on CD. I'm transfixed, floored. I must have listened to it a hundred times before I came up for air. Then one afternoon a guy in the co-op said, "Ah, I think I have some music that you might like." So, I and another roommate go to this guy's room and he slides a box or two out of his closet and they are filled with vinyl of all this prog/fusion etc. stuff from the 1970s. By about 3 in the morning we had listened to Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jean-Luc Ponty, Bill Bruford, King Crimson, UK, Brand X, Genesis, etc., etc. That was my introduction to this amazing world. And I remembered flipping the albums over and seeing who's playing what, then finding connections with other bands. I'll never forget that evening/night. Unfortunately, at least for now, the tour of this "super group" is not coming near where I live. Alas.

That was very interesting. I listened to Discipline for the first time a few weeks ago after watching an old interview with Robert Fripp on YT, where he talked about making the album. It was fascinating, although I didn't understand all of it.
Then I saw the Rick Beato interview, and now this. I'm forty years late to the party, but I got there in the end, thankfully.
Regarding the coming election in America, you seemed to suggest that Biden represented order, and Trump represented chaos. May I respectfully suggest that the opposite is true. Trump was the first president in living memory not to start a war. While he was in office, America's enemies didn't invade other countries. North Korea, which Obama said was the USA's biggest problem, was kept quiet with a few words and some excellent diplomacy. Trump managed to persuade the North and South Korean leaders to meet and shake hands for the first time. In the Middle East, Trump negotiated peace treaties between Israel and several of its neighbours. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for that, but it was not widely reported in the left wing media (i.e., 95% of the media). Under Trump, America became a net exporter of energy. Petrol prices were the lowest for a long time, which encouraged growth in the economy. Unemployment was the lowest ever recorded for ethnic minorities. Trump built a large part of the wall to deter illegal immigration and make the people safer.
When Biden became President, he immediately opened the Southern border, allowing millions of people from around the world into the USA. This was during the cov 19 pandemic, when most of the populace was locked up. Crime has risen hugely as a result.
On day one, Biden cancelled the oil pipeline from Canada that would have supplied 900,000 barrels a day of oil, immediately pushing up the price of fuel, distribution, and everything that has to be distributed. Inflation in the USA is almost all down to Biden.
Biden ordered US forces to leave Afghanistan, leaving behind billions of dollars worth of military equipment, thirteen dead soldiers, and hundreds of American civilians. When the dead soldiers bodies were returned to America, he, as president, was required to be on the runway of the airport as they were brought off the plane. It was a solemn occasion marred by the fact that he kept looking at his watch every few minutes.
Under Biden, Russia invaded Ukraine. That would never have happened under Trump. Under Biden, Hamas massacred 1200 or more Israelis without warning after a long period of relative peace. Maybe that would have happened anyway, even with Trump in charge. Religious extremists are unpredictable. North Korea has gone back to being belligerent and testing nuclear weapons. China looks more and more likely to invade Taiwan.
Trump has been accused of many things, all of them fake. The current ones were intended to stop him from running for President. They had no other purpose. Biden, on the other hand, is guilty of many crimes. He, his son and his brother have been taking money from foreign companies and regimes for decades. Joe was recently found to have wilfully taken and kept classified documents from his time as a senator and vice-president. That is, he was definitely guilty of a serious crime. However, Robert Hur, the man in charge of the investigation, found that it would not be worth prosecuting him since a jury would see him as a forgetful old man who probably had good intentions. Not everyone is equal under the law.

Love the analysis of the three albums. Fripp is very much into GI Gurdjieff and 4th Way, so that deserves deeper discussion. I studied that as well. As to the rest of it regarding the super-elites, the generalizations surrounding all that are part of the problem. As to the pandemic, it was less about staying home, and mainly about not gathering in large crowds where a possible airborne virus could easily be spread. In any regard, I look forward to seeing Beat in Chicago in November. I live in Nashville and have met Adrian here, and saw King Crimson with Fripp, Belew, Levin and Bruford in the early 80s. Will Vai be sitting down? No one has asked him that yet. It’s so interesting, because Vai is technically capable, but I’ve also always viewed him as the antithesis of Fripp’s restraint. Vai likes to be unchained and emotive. But like Fripp, he is also disciplined too. And from his early Zappa days he clearly knows how defer to music that is not his own. Something that hasn’t been mentioned is that Fripp played live with Vai and Satriani. Maybe Fripp likes the choice of Steve Vai.

He does like the choice of Vai. They met a few days ago when Fripp was in LA and Fripp has said Vai is the right man. I sort of expect Vai to get the Fripp parts that are very Fripp correct and then add his own thing with what him and Adrian concoct on their own. Probably could throw Tony in there too. Honestly I think they all will try their best to be an original band while paying respect to the music. Not an easy thing and I’m not sure how it will be, but I have tickets and will be there, God willing.

Bought Discipline in 1983 based solely on Bruford's work with Yes and Levin's with Peter Gabriel. Hadn't really listened to any Crimson before this, save for hearing Court of the Crimson King sporadically on classic rock stations.
Well, upon hearing this masterpiece, my mind was expanded to the point where my head almost exploded. I literally wore the grooves down from listening to this basically nonstop for the following six months, trying to figure out Belew and Fripp's guitar parts ( yeah, I know, rather futile attempt, but I had to try.) Discipline is still in my top ten all time favorite albums, and that bar is pretty freakin' high.

Would you reconsider ranking Fripp as number two to number one prog guitarist? I love Steve Howe's guitar playing, but Fripp's contributions to prog (in my opinion, of course) have much more depth and impact. The Court, Lark's, and Discipline incarnations of Crimson were born out of Fripp's conceptions and visions of what music can be: these are radically different bands (!), yet are all held together by Fripp's radical ideas. Considering his contributions to music, including new standard tuning, Frippertronics, ability to play in almost any genre of music effectively, and so forth, Fripp is a true genius and a monumental prog guitarist, composer, and group leader. Would Howe inspire your diatribes, discussions, debates declamations, expressions, exclamations, conversations, criticisms, commentary, and so forth at the end of this video to the same level as Fripp has? :)
Thank you so much for your interesting videos and discussion, Andy! I always learn something from them!

I came into Crimson in`84 with Three of a Perfect Pair. I was 13, the video of Sleepless was on Much Music ( here in Canada ) and they were playing in Toronto soon. I was young and going to Toronto from my hometown would be a difficult endeavor. But I was so taken by this music that all I could think about was seeing KC live. Of coarse, I never went and have never been able to shake that disappointment. Until perhaps now! I`ll be at Massey Hall in Toronto on October 18th 2024 to see some of my favorite music ever recorded. And maybe, just maybe, I`ll be able to put my love of seeing this era of Crimson to bed. Great episode Andy. ( Bozzio would have been my choice but Carey brings the youth, Ha Ha )

I don't believe opposites (liberal/conservative, old/young, order/chaos) can ever come together to solve anything. I think that is utopian. Duality is a fundamental characteristic of human beings. I do believe that a few people have (or develop) the ability to transcend that duality, but they are a tiny minority. That has been my goal for a long, LONG, time, but I have not yet been able to even approach that state of being. And I'm 65 years old ... I don't have that much more time! Unfortunately climate change is the next great equalizer in my view, and I'm extremely skeptical that we have the ability to avoid the cataclysm on the horizon. As George Carlin said: "Pack your shit, folks. We're going away." I do feel bad for young people, who will not have the chance to live out their lives and bring their light to the world. But in the end it doesn't really make any difference ... the universe couldn't care less.

I saw KC at the Albert Hall in 2019. Awesome. However, they had a terrible experience in America with promoters seemingly indifferent to Covid. They would have been wiped out financially if anyone in the band had caught Covid. I think they realised that it was time to quit after a seven year run of stunning live shows. Check out their last live album Music is Our Friend. They are playing as if their lives depended on it.

I also passed. I’ve seen them many times since Larks through the 80’s as well as their various other projects THeads, Asia, UK, Bowie et al to last a lifetime. Many times in dive bars with as few people as 50-100 and no proper stage. Nitro in Redford MI comes to mind. No stage and very few people in attendance and 10-12’ from their corner spot on floor. Pretty amazing. Besides, nowadays it’s difficult to go to a show that people came to be quiet and listen. Someone always has to be shouting or howling while they’re playing.

Another excellent analysis. Very engaging with so many little facts and side-tracks, layered in with that encyclopedic history brain of yours! Bravo!
I would only add that perhaps the importance of "kraut rock," and bands like Neu, Can, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream has been overlooked? One key concern of theirs was the subsuming of the individual to create a greater, collective whole (so no solos). That was an interesting exploration of concepts similar to, or drawn from, the Minimalists working at the same time. It also ties into the a very German expression of the Sublime - being overwhelmed and powerless in the face of Nature (like the painter Caspar David Friedrich). And that then works in opposition to the SuperMan that might conquer nature.
    Just a thought.
Thanks again for the insights and humor.
