I can assure this is not a coincidence. The pattern/trajectory described in this video can be found in a number of artists and bands (Metallica for example)
I saw Radiohead perform live in 03 and for the encore they played Everything in its Right Place which blew my mind. And oddly enough for an electronic track the way they used free form jazz to finish the song out, going crazy for a good 10 minutes with these odd computer instruments was one of the most amazing displays of musical expression I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget it and I wish every Radiohead fan could witness it. Fortunately they have a live version of the song on their Everything In Its Right Place (live) album. You can hear them jamming out to the track for the last half of the song. So awesome.
I saw them live for 2 nights in 2001 at the Victoria Park, Warrington gig that was recorded for Radio 1. The best gig I've ever been to. EIIRP live is definitely a sonic journey.
First mashup I ever fell in love with was octopuses garden by the Beatles mashed with santeria by sublime. Can't say it's my absolute favorite now but it's still at the top of the list
Jazz pianist/keyboardist Robert Glasper, who appears on Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, has recorded Everything in its Right Place mashed with Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage for his third album. And has performed it live several times. So this inspiration from Radiohead should not be too surprising.
I also find it intresting that kid a and tpab both came from dramatic mindset changes in their life. For Kendrick it was visiting Africa that opened his mind up and for Radiohead it was the ok computer tour that put them in a completely different mental state. Very intresting
Right? I’m intrigued by the idea. I could imagine an artist like Kendrick sampling Lotus Flower or Feral. Those songs in particular would translate well to hip hop. Also, I don’t like how TKOL is written off by some fans. It’s not my favorite RH album, but I still love it, especially the live versions of each song.
More rhythmic experimentation perhaps. Or consider this: in order to perform TKOL, because of the complexity around it and what they were trying to accomplish, they needed to tour with an extra drummer. Perhaps this will be Kendrick’s most collaborative album to date
This video only made me wish even more for a Radiohead sample on a Kendrick release, or hell even an actual collab like how U2 did on XXX. These two are on my top 5 favorite artists of all time so this video was a really nice treat. Thank you!
I encourage you to give “How Much A Dollar Cost?” another listen, and follow that up with “Pyramid Song”. And then love the fact that it’s secretly been there the whole time.
I wouldn’t be surprised , (fun fact) David Bowie’s last album was heavily influenced by Kendrick Lamar. Bowie was fascinated by the way Kendrick depicted his experiences and his open mindedness

Honey Pablo = Overly Dedicated The Bends = Section 80 Ok Computer = Good Kid, Maad City Kid A = To Pimp A Butterfly Amnesiac = Untitled Unmastered Hail to the Thief = Damn. In Rainbows = Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers
It’s not a theory it’s more like an observation. Yeah okay these albums have similar themes but so do many others. Nobody’s first album is their best, for the most part.
5:38 Purely from an album title standpoint; the fact that good kid, m.A.A.d city didn’t line up with Kid A is an unfortunate missed coincidence there...
I was listening to Anima by Thom Yorke and I thought that Kendrick and Thom would be incredible working together. You are the real one for this video. I am definitely with you, as I have been a radio head fan since 2000. Kendrick didn't come to me until 2023. I was late becoming a fan of both of these amazing artists, but I am glad I did, when I did.
I hate that it’s RARELY discussed how DAMN. is a double album - when the tracks are played from last to first, the second album is NATION., going from salvation to DAMNATION, the exact opposite of DAMN. There was a WHOLE LOTTA HYPE surrounding this idea that Kendrick was going to release two albums back when DAMN. was released, and I remember so many people being disappointed - but he literally did. DEFinitely a reason why he won a Pulitzer. The man is a genius.
Huge fan of both Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead, and I couldn't be more stoked that someone's finally having this conversation and comparing these artists and the parallels of their bodies of works; upon first listen, "United in Grief" gave me major Radiohead vibes as well. Never heard of your channel before this video or seen any of your other ones, but on the strength of the subject matter of this one alone, you've got yourself a sub! (BTW, In Rainbows is also my favorite Radiohead album of all time---which is why I guess it only makes perfect sense why Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers would be my personal favorite Kendrick Lamar album of all time, too.)
Glad I came across this. When listening to Auntie Diaries for the firs time, I remember hearing the swelling instruments in the background as the song progressed, and man, that hit in a way that was lovely yet familiar.. I wasn't sure where that feeling was elsewhere though. But eventually I put the two and two together and it was akin to the feelings I would feel listening to radiohead. Well done.
How Much A Dollar Costs has a lot of Radiohead influence on it. And as far as Pablo Honey, Anyone Can Play Guitar is probably the most underrated Radiohead song.
It's definitely a Kid A era or Amnesiac era song with it's lyrical content having that spiritual and profound nature that eludes you somehow on your first 100 listens back when you were an angry teenager
It's only this year that i started to dive deep into Radiohead and Kendrick, and i never really think of the connection between the two. But now i think this is the reason why i suddenly got obsessed with the two artists almost at the same time
I've seen them as similar in a lot of ways but not from what you laid out. I largely saw them as similar because I think they both had cracked the code on popular music, but also aren't the least bit worried about having a popular song. I'm sure you know how Radiohead feel about the song creep. I feel like Kendrick was the same about popular music. He could make a number 1 song in 30 min. But as an artist, doesn't so much care about that. I think that's why Not Like Us was so big. (Sorry to touch on the beef for a moment) In NLU Kendrick was showing how easy it is for him to do what Drake does on a regular basis. NLU came out maybe 13 hours after Family Matters, with responses to what was said in Family Matters. I think K. Dot made NLU to prove to Drake that you have the number 1's because you aren't pushing boundaries, not because you're the chosen one. That was my read, anyways. I just don't think either RH or KL are interested in being very popular, rather pushing art forward and being as honest with themselves as possible and being interested, not so much loved by all, but understood by enough people to survive and evolve. There is authenticity in that.
THIS THEORY IS SO REAL. MY FAVOURITE ARTISTS ARE ALSO KENDRICK AND RADIOHEAD BUT I NEVER MADE THIS CONNECTION BEFORE. DROPPED A SUB CAUSE YOU DESERVE IT ❤️
I've seen both artist many times. But I am a huge radiohead fan, and have seen them atleast 8 times. I have traveled far and wide to marvel in their genius. Its sad the last time i saw them was at primavera sound barcelona 2016. Thanks for this video. I'm very happy to someone has delved into such a conflicting yet contrasting analysis.
After I finished watching your Kendrick vs Drake video this one popped up. As a massive Radiohead fan (In Rainbows is also my fav RH album/album in general) and someone who is not into hiphop, but has been interested in Kendrick's discog/story since the beef, I clicked on this video so fast and I loved it!
my favourite Kendrick album is DAMN, and my favourite radiohead album is hail to the thief. always thought they were both quite random picks but this makes so much sense
Personally I consider A moon shaped pool to be Radiohead's Mr Morale. They're both underrated songs that you can tell have a very personal meaning to them, they're largely unlike both artists' previous works, and they both contain a lot of the artists' respective histories in some way. They're also both albums I honestly wouldn't mind being the last in their discographies. AMSP is that kind of album I feel it takes a different kind of Radiohead fan to appreciate. It feels more like an ode to their history, featuring finalized versions of some of their oldest demos and finishing off with true love waits, the song that's been with radiohead their entire career pretty much. It genuinely feels like a final goodbye from the band and has some of the most heartfelt moments of all their albums. It's why it's personally my favorite album from Radiohead. As for Mr Morale, it doesn't feel nearly as much like a closure album, but it matches some of the heartfelt and personal beats. Of course, this would break the linear continuity of the parallelism of their careers but I think if we're talking about what fits best, I'd say it's these two albums over Mr Morale and In Rainbows.
I guess it was only a question of “when” rather than “if” for this video to appear. Thank you for this. A fan of both sides. And a fan of King Of Limbs, which is rare in the camp of On A Friday fans. So I’m waiting patiently for Kendrick’s version of Bloom and Codex
I’m more of a hip-hop head, and I think I enjoyed Radiohead’s later music more. Probably because I was younger with their older stuff. However, Thom Yorke’s solo stuff is really good too.
I’ve been a Radiohead fan since the MTV Beach House Creep performance when I was in 8th grade. I’ve just started getting into Kendrick and this really helps me understand how to approach his discography. Thank you!
I discovered Kendrick after someone on TH-cam made a video essay on DAMN, now I am hooked and I have heard of Radiohead but never listened to their music, but after this I am curious. Delicious content 😜
Funny, i just ordered Good Kid, M.A.A.D City today online (my 1st Kendrick album). Radiohead is one of my all time favorite bands. In Rainbows is my favorite album, with Reckoner being my favorite song.
Thanks not what he’s saying. He said right before which almbums those track are from, he’s saying that after listening to the mashup fans of one were exposed to the works of the other and listened to eacherothers albums
Funnily enough, Pablo Honey was my first purchase ever of any Radiohead album, and it was my gateway drug to their art. Not once had I thought of it as the ear sore aberration in their discography as many claims it to be, and the numerous times I've played it on my deck until the tape stretched is my personal testament to that. Of course, I defer to the more sophisticated listener and fan; if that's what they say, then that's what they say. For me though, that album damn well counts.
I am so sorry, but when I saw this I laughed💀. These are quite literally my top 2 artists of all time. Thinking about a parallel is fine and all, but just listen to a track like Blacker The Berry, and compare it to a track like Exit Music. I genuinely can't stop laughing. No disrespect either. Just, the thought is so absurd to me. I probably sound like such a snob, tbh 😅. To elaborate, I find the idea funny. Although the core concept is pretty interesting.
Great video! Are you a fan of Flying Lotus? He and Thom are best friends and have worked together… I think you can hear a bit of this kind of mashup coolness when they do tracks together, I wish they would do more and I think Thom could do lots of excellent work with several unique hiphop people like Kendrick Lamar. Flying Lotus is kind of a mashup all by himself, of course, total freak! Here’s something you’ll like as a huge Radiohead fan… I was at South By Southwest in Austin when Radiohead headlined in 2016… Flying Lotus was on before Radiohead… it was Thom Yorke and Flying Lotus’ birthday… everyone sang happy birthday to Flying Lotus and he told everyone to sing happy birthday to Thom when Radiohead was on. He said Radiohead was his favorite band of all time. He was getting REALLY drunk onstage, drinking tequila out of the bottle…it was so funny… he said “I’m gettin drunk cause it’s my birthday… and someone promised me a hit of acid… Thom wants to get drunk too but he’s a professional… “. 😂 At one point Thundercat came out, he didn’t play, just talked in Flying Lotus’s ear for a few minutes. RZA had played earlier in the lineup, his band with the guy from Interpol … and Flying Lotus said that after the show they were having a birthday party with RZA as DJ, and that’s when Thom was gonna get drunk. So funny!! And my god, to be a fly on the wall at that party! We did all sing happy birthday to Thom after Radiohead had played their first couple songs … it was great, he was embarrassed 😀 , someone has it on TH-cam somewhere. Anyway, great video! Cheers!
I appreciate the perspective; it's not for me, but I can see how some could overlay the two. I'm a huge fan of both; neither remind me of the other's discography. Thank you for putting this together.
2 of my faves. The Roots got me into RadioHead. Interview with them ?uestLove and Black Thought said OK Computer is one of THE GREATEST albums of all time. This was back in 98. Been a fan since. Kung Fu Kenny speaks for himself .
I started tying them together when I realized the place GKMC and TPAB holds in Hip Hop is very similar to the place Ok Computer and In Rainbows hold in rock. Both considered one of the best musical albums period, and two albums that these artist will probably never recreate. Same with DAMN. and Hail to the Thief and MM&TBS and Kid A. That's how I compared them.
Speaking on the Pyramid song sample. I am a producer. I know a lot of a famous producers... Some in the hip hop world. Trend tends to be this... While writing you use a real sample... but when it comes time to record, often times you get a session player to play the sample or something similar. This avoids any copyright issues or lawsuits. So likely it was written with a sample from Radiohead, and then they hired a piano player. Even listening to the performance, the slow rolls of the notes on the chords are different than Yorke's more straight playing.
Kendrick Lamar's newer snippet showcased in a fashion week chanel runway sounds eerily similar, and has similar lyricism to Radiohead's down is the new up, featured on their in rainbows disk 2 album
I know we like to make some connections, and like it's also interesting connectios. But let's be honest here TPAB and GKMC are like miles ahead in terms of quality, conceptually & thematically. They just so well-put together, it's as if they're like a thesis of some sort. But yeahh, Ok Computer and Kid A are undoubted timeless classics.
Ive been a Kendrick and Radiohead fan for almost a decade now... I started to hey seriously and in depth into them literally in the past month... And this video drops now?

YES IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS COMPARISON TOO
i literally never heard of the mashup in the beginning and i like both 😭
I discovered Kendrick after someone on TH-cam made a video essay on DAMN, now I am hooked and I have heard of Radiohead but never listened to their music, but after this I am curious. Delicious content 😜
beautiful idea...the views are coming🔥🔥🔥
I love videos that are directed to certain fanbases who like things that contrast eachother
Funny, i just ordered Good Kid, M.A.A.D City today online (my 1st Kendrick album). Radiohead is one of my all time favorite bands. In Rainbows is my favorite album, with Reckoner being my favorite song.
OK Computer, In Rainbows, and TPAB are all in my top 10 albums
Two of my favorite artists. Thought about this for years.
Ok, that was actually very interesting, and basically all the points made sense. Guess I have to check ount Kendrick now.
0:25 Sir, “Everything in its Right Place” is from the album Kid A, not In Rainbows. And “N95” is off of Mr. Morale not TPAB.
bro didn’t understand what he was saying
For me though, that album damn well counts.
the mashups in each transition are crazy lmaoo
This video was legit one of the best videos ever bro good flipping job
Both In Rainbows and Mr Morale & The Big Steppers both have me going back and picking a new favorite song on each album.
The way my favorite kendrick album being Untitled Unmastered and my favorite radiohead album being Amnesiac is making sense
5:37 backseat freestyle x exit music is a mashup I never thought I would see 😭
backseat music (for a freestyle)
Cheers!
Overly Dedicated is literally my favourite KDot album.
Cut you off and High Power is peak Kendrick
Radiohead and Kendrick are also my favorite band and rapper ever.
I appreciate the perspective; it's not for me, but I can see how some could overlay the two.
I'm a huge fan of both; neither remind me of the other's discography.
Thank you for putting this together.
Yeah it is a bit of a leap, it seems like you could make this comparison with too many artists to make it worth exploring.
@MarLoria
"United in Grief" indeed sounds like Tom Yorke's "Cymball Rush" from the album "The Eraser", at least it reminds me a lot of it.
I am CACKLING at the transitions, especially Idioteque with Kendrick's AAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I’m a big fan of both Radiohead and Kendrick, this is such a good watch 👍👍
They are very similar in a way. It's a sadness to all of their music, even the 'upbeat' songs. I can't explain it, but I LOVE them both deeply.
7:58 popular music history is a good way to word that
Wow, This is actually a great comparison. Good job fr🔥
Damn this video is amazing! Kendrick and Radiohead are two of my favorite artists!
I see both my favorite artists in a thumbnail, I click
5:38 UHH... MARTIN HAD A DREAM🔥
Thanks for sharing this collection of thoughts. I go listen to Kendrick's now.
"Hey you. Name a song on Pablo honey other than creep" "I can't"
"name a song off Pablo Honey that isn't Creep"
'i can't'
"yeah, i didn't think so"
Kendrick Lamar's newer snippet showcased in a fashion week chanel runway sounds eerily similar, and has similar lyricism to Radiohead's down is the new up, featured on their in rainbows disk 2 album
I love Alien Girl from Overly Dedicated. Had me in a chokehold all of 2011-2013
I know we like to make some connections, and like it's also interesting connectios.
I have been a Radiohead fan since I started listening to music I say them at bonnaroo first time in 05 😮 hooked ever since and now I’m getting into Kendrick thanks for the video
Even Radiohead fans see Kendrick Lamar as a geek.
