I haven’t finished the video yet but on reading comprehension Taylor’s asylum lyric on TTPD was one moment were I was like damn some of you can’t fucking read bc people were posting photos of her childhood homes being like oh what an asylum! meanwhile she’s very obviously referring to being a teenager in the music industry

That's honestly bad faith interpretation by people, not by swifties. Most of the people who made those statements do understand what she was saying but they'll take any opportunity to be unfair to her work
people don’t realize that the fact that pictures of her childhood home are so readily available IS the asylum, people posting pictures of it to hate on her are only proving her point
Kendrick's got a damn Pulitzer! "Damn is the recipient of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first time a musical work outside of the classical and jazz genres was honored."

@@roshiiirohoe I'm a music lover. Good music has to speak. Has to have depth. Meaning. Story telling and weaving. A desire to evoke something MORE. That isn't to say that artists that make straight bangers and club music aren't enjoyable- just saying that it's ok to write about something that has a deeper meaning than face value. Write a song about your addiction. Don't tell me what you're writing about. Give me a story. Evoke something from me. Bring me to tears. Make me flinch. Get me to laugh. Get me to catch my breath and wince. Evoke a sense of fear, humility, passion, excitement- anything. RAP does that- it's the *core* of the music. Go back in time all the greatest rock hits, jazz hits, blues hits, rnb hits, etc does this. Fuck. Even *classical* music does this. *that* is what makes it *art*. Taylor Swift is due credit for giving this story telling and provocative lyrical poetry to POP fans. Just the same as Kendrick is due credit for his lyrical genius.
I think Mother I Sober is where Drizzy got the DV lie from, too. Kendrick says he couldn't look in the black and blue face of his queen, remember? But he was talking about his mother. But again, Drizzy's low comprehension skills made him think Kenny was talking about Whitney. He even used the word "queen" when he said it.
@@sorinnoctis652 i mean, idk for sure, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me, considering how he pulled that whole line of attack out his ass on FM. he already misinterpreted the SA part, so it's apparent he skimmed the lyrics. he def coulda thought the DV thing was what kenny was talmbout if he only skimmed the lyrics. 🤷♀

Folklore/Evermore are two of my favorite albums of hers, along with 1989. Don't hate I know it's pop but it is an incredible pop album and Taylor has won a lot of awards for it.

as a swiftie and casual kendrick fan i absolutely loved this! i enjoy story telling more than everything in the world, thats why i love tays music so much and listen to it almost exclusively, but will come back to kendrick and other artists with great story telling once in a while. i do have to admit that actively listening to these storys cause some sort of superiority complex iykwim but i love that every person has the chance to educate themselves through music! especially literature analysis vice versa. analyzing lyrics and casual literature i enjoy actually helped me a lot in school, for example with readi g comprehensions. so thank you for this video! i really enjoyed it and believe it can educate many people about the importance of actively training your attention span through listening to music! not sire of thos was comprehensible, not a native english speaker :)
i started in swift's catalogue before kendrick's and the amount of people who never read through lyrics was crazy to me, like it's a central part of the music and you're not reading lyrics at minimum first listen??
Just wanted to say thank you. I came on here originally like a year ago bc of your Taylor swift videos, but I didn’t know I would find love for Kendrick Lamar too. Without your videos I never would have thought about listening to him.
Another good example I think is hozier. Not necessarily with Easter eggs, but just the way he crafts his lyrics, all the references to mythology, history, art, music, all the themes that he explores. And most importantly, something I think is true for Kendrick and Taylor as well is that they are all telling stories. They treat music as a medium for storytelling, and that's what makes their albums have so much replay value. Because people never get tired of a well told, interesting story
When you talked about reading comprehension all I could think of was people’s reactions to the lyrics of I Hate It Here by Taylor Swift (The 1830s line). That part of the song was all about how romanticizing the past is wrong and it can only be good in a made up, impossible, childish simplistic way. People were so lazy that they at best judged the song from an isolated line and made it seem shallow, pointing out the exact thing the song itself was criticizing (and people thought they were being smart and virtue signalling while doing it 😭), or even worse, they had an insane interpretation of the song and were calling her a racist who “liked those cotton picking days” (when even with a bad interpretation of the song she straight up says she longed for a past WITHOUT racism). All I could think of is how it was scary how people could not read
I had already listened to all of TTPD before my partner did, and they talked over the following lines, going 'wait, that sounds racist,' and I wonder how many other people that happened with - who just completely missed the following, contextual lines and never listened again or checked the lyrics. Of course I corrected them and pointed out that the following context was important, but not everyone is going to have someone there to refute that initial impression.
There is a reason I’m here watching this in September when the beef started in March. Kendrick’s artistry can analyzed months later and you can STILL find something new to talk about.
People who enjoy music did.. not exactly fans but people who genuinely enjoy all genres of music. I'm not a Taylor fan, but I'm a music and artistry fan. Open your horizons, you might surprise yourself
Kendrick fan here 🤚🏾I only watch Kendrick reactions. Rewatched his interviews 7+ years ago. Always listen to his songs while reading the lyrics while contemplating on life experiences. Kendrick is definitely a storyteller.
Still remember you said in a previous videos, how Taylor and Kendrick were the best storytellers of their generation and the proof was found in Duckworth and The Last Great American Dynasty, and IT'S TRUE! no one like them, that capacity is unmatched and a very special talent.
As a Kendrick fan from way back, this is all spot on! I also realize I've been neglecting Taylor's music because one of my favorite Podcasters hates her. I never even gave her a chance. Seeing her champion lyricism on Fallon and hearing some recent snippets, I'm going back on Taylor. I might be a swiftie by the end of the year. Lol. You have changed the mind of a purist music head. Excellent video!
We're the same, but the opposite. I've been a swiftie for years, delved into rap here and there, but never fully committed. This Drake and Kendrick beef piqued my interest and watched multiple deep dive videos of it. It introduced me to Kendrick's music and lyricism. I'm starting to listen to him now, and by the looks of it, I will be his fan in months!
What's also so amazing about Kendrick's storytelling is that he weaves stories together from prior songs. So for example on "Keisha's Song," he tells a story about a prostitute named Keisha. Fast forward an album later, on the second verse of "Sing About Me," he raps from Keisha's sister's perspective and how mad she was at Kendrick for making "Keisha's Song".....so many more examples but yeah, amazing video!!!!
Ever since I gave the latest Billie Eilish album a listen, I started reading the lyrics while listening to the music, and it's been mind-blowing! It's an entirely different experience. I've played the album at least ten times, and I discover something new or understand something different each time. As a result, I've started reading the lyrics for all the albums I listen to, especially Beyoncé's (the last two albums for now) and Taylor Swift's. Lately, I've become interested in Kendrick's music and lyrics. I used to only listen to his most popular songs, but everything changed after this feud. And It just occurred to me that Kendrick challenging everyone by name has led to better music because of the competition.
I was intrigued by Kendrick Lamar, listening to his songs, but then putting it back down, not thinking too much about it, but after this rap beef, I became one of those investigative journalists and going back and listening to all those songs gives me chills. And this video made me excited to think that Taylor Swift is similarly talented, which I never knew. I’m bout to be a Swifty for the next couple weeks, listening to all her albums.
it is simply not possible to listen to that much of Taylor's music and NOT become a lifelong Swiftie. She's just too good. I would know, that's exactly what happened to me. Welcome to the fandom, it's really fun here 😉
I would love to see you do a full breakdown of Kendrick's damn album for the Swifties. I have learned about him through your Taylor videos, but I would like that kind of break down about Kendrick.
People miss so much in to pimp a butterfly, like it’s a really sad album, it’s leaking with depression, suicidal ideation, and bitter spitefulness, it’s depiction on black stardom through the caterpillar and butterfly metaphor is masterful, Kendrick struggling with loving himself and him returning to his heritage and homestead to fill that void is beautiful. Can’t wait to see your video on it.
It's not even just the lyrics, it's the pronunciation, rhythm, pacing, emotion, tempo, story arc, narrative. Sometimes even just the confusion and then the clarity, or vice versa. It's an entire journey.
Damn, that's so true. They really did underestimate us but they didn't realize that we like puzzles lol Edit: 18:32 HOLY SHIT that song is 12 minutes long?! It felt like 5!
This video really hits home. While they were in elementary school, I introduced my kid to the Harry Potter book series, which they loved. Later, as a high school student, my kid highly recommended that I listen to Kendrick Lamar. After listening to GKMC, I instantly became a fan. My kid is now a college graduate, and we've spent several phone calls discussing and dissecting Kendrick's lyrics from this beef. Lol Great video! I'll have to send it to my kid.
THIS is the best comment here. I would of wanted to be a parent like you❤ Just a cat lady with dogs traveling through dropping love on the coolest! Tell your kid the Kendrick fandom said "HEY BABY!!🙃❤
Thanks for these deep analysis; it’s amazing how successful Taylor and Kendrick are at balancing between being lyrically deep for their fans & yet accessible for the masses. No wonder they are so successful in their genre 🎵
RIGHT! This brought my daughter and I together like we were legit detectives. Matter of fact, I'm sending her this vid. We went over MMATBS and TPAB together as well. Kendrick is HIM
I used to be an avid Taylor Swift listener, and I loved getting the CDs specifically because the lyric books in the box always had Easter eggs. Her fingerprints are all over her work, even the booklets. Kendrick is exactly the same. His references, puzzles from reworking the orders of his albums, he's a genius. Musicians like Drake were propped up from the goal of being famous. Whereas Taylor and Kendrick want their music to be heard..
In all honesty, music is meant to make you think. That’s the purpose of art. You should walk away all hearing different things. It should speak to your soul and make you feel and see the world differently. I used to hate literature class because I hated analysing poetry and figuring out what the poet meant or felt…like how the f am I supposed to know that? But as I grew up and experienced more of life it made sense to me. Rap is art at its purest and highest form. It combines poetry and music and storytelling and creative writing…it encompasses so many art forms into one thing.
kendrick is such a good lyricist that he won a pulitzer prize for the album DAMN. which is extra impressive because its the only musical piece to not be jazz or classical. so impressive that the International Baccalaureate allows their students to study kendrick in high school and write whole ass essays on his work
I feel like Kendrick fans are true lovers of hip hop/art/ and tend to be more introspective while Drake fans just like going to the club and being associated with popularity.
This is true, I personally hate that I didn't know Kendrick earlier, I'm really happy he did this beef because now I got to see him, especially so raw, for example, I love Eminem to death and clearly his new album is doing numbers, but I have not touched that album, tbh, I have Euphoria on repeat, pulling motivation from Like That, peaking at to Pimp a butterfly at work, getting attached to I and u, the blacker the berry, complexion, just his whole way of carrying my mind thru a story even tho my job is a chat job and I'm talking to 4 persons at once, I still get carried through his emotional roller-coaster and lyrics. In fact, I've been passively listening to him thru features, his song Momma I hit a lick was in Need For Speed Heat and I was so obsessed with that song, I downloaded the games soundtrack, then recently I'm like oh shit the second verse is Kendrick, his feat on love game with Eminen his feat on mona Lisa with lil Wayne, I even remembered having DNA as my ringtone for months in 2018 so his music has always been knocking at my door I guess. But yeah you're right.
The point about the fans is such a good one. Of people requiring an album a year because the music has no staying power. It’s such a simple point that actually clears so much up for me.
It's one of the reasons I quite like the Billboard 200 albums chart. To see which albums stick with people. DAMN is at 34 (week 379), good kid m.A.A.d City at 42 (week 612) Drake's highest album is the recent one For All The Dogs at 54 (week 41) Drake's albums don't stick with people.
Here’s an Easter egg I haven’t seen anyone talk about. “GO. The audience not DUMB” And he shouted out The Bay in the line right before, “you think The Bay gon let you disrespect Pac” Going dumb is a common phrase/dance move in Hyphy culture. I would think it was a coincidence but..come on, it’s Kendrick lol
I’m a dedicated swiftie and a very casual Kendrick fan, however I think perhaps after this I will need to add him into my listening rotation more frequently ‼️
One thing I noticed about a week ago as I was re-listening to The Heart Part V is that while his face is morphed into Kobe he says, "Euphoria Is glorified and made his.". Kendrick released Euphoria at 8:24 am.
From memory isn't that the line when you first really notice it's Kobe he's turned into. The way Kendrick looks hard straight at the camera as he says it and you're like "wow, that went from generic looking person to full on Kobe in a split second".
When I was young, dad used to explain lyrics (mostly Eminem, pac, etc.) while we drove in the car. That may have had an effect on my music tastes now as I think I evolved from his tastes into story of soundscape as well (since I rly like instrumentals)
this video is insane! I loved everything about this video and the best part was it was SO VALIDATING. my god and I tired of people shitting on main stream artist just because there song had a good backtrack, when its the LYRICS im talking about. Agree, also The last Great American Dynasy was about She ( he) was mad , bad and dangerous to know ( What Oscar Wild said about himself) basically Taylor was saying that there were parallels to Rebecka and now the neighborhood has her and again that sort of free spirit and she bought the house.
I appreciate you actually knowing what you talking about lol a lot of guys piggyback off the beef and just be spewing stuff in support of Kendrick which is cool coz I support him too but they just yap and it’s clear they don’t have an endpoint for whatever they’re saying so thank you bro

real as a swiftie i feel like all the hate comes from misogyny
This is the nicest way to calling Drake a dummy I’ve ever seen in a video and the presentation is exquisite
And this is how Taylor has a honorary doctorate and Kendrick has a Pulitzer
Be respectful
This video made me Finally understand WHY the girlies are obsessed with Taylor Swift's music😮
Same!
Fr.. he got me thru talking abt kendrick and I got additional info abt Taylor 😅
Honestly I'm no Swifty but the hate for her and her fanbases often comes from a hatred for woman and especially teenage girls. Taylor writes her own music, has some bangers, loves Easter eggs etc. If half the haters(usually fragile men) actually listened to some of her songs they might even like it.
@@alinac5512 I'ma always give Taylor Swift hell for essentially gentrifying Earth, Wind & Fire w/that seasonless cover of "September" 🤣 AND I think she does do something similar to Drake, to where it sounds like she's ceaselessly writing her music for the same age demographic instead of aging up her audience & content as she & they get older (but you know, at least she doesn't have all those OTHER allegations & associations attached to her that Drake has on him now)...
But I agree with you, most of the OTHER criticisms Taylor Swift gets are unwarranted & are essentially just misogyny playing out in hating on the things that young girls like
@@holybalognajabronies2013 honestly I don't know September, I'll just give you that one, I agree that she is definitely a product of the industry sometimes, same as drake but yeah, no allegations. And ty for agreeing with me on the rest, have a lovely day :).
17:50 its so weird hearing "its a niche reference" being a Swiftie and thinking its the most basic fact 😭
It's because we're like a huuuuge but very insular group, people who aren't swifties basically have never heard that song especially that closely lol
My mom told me a long time ago, "You have to teach people how to treat you." Kendrick and Taylor have done a great job of doing that.
Daamn, thanks for that. Putting those two artists together really shows you that NONE of the popular criticisms aimed at them have no grounds. They do everything music is supposed to do, why people need music in the first place, and they execute it flawlessly. I will be waiting for your To Pimp A Butterfly thinkpiece bc i want to get into Kendrick for the exact reason i went into Taylor
As a swiftie who respects Kendrick and his music, it is really fun to try and decode the meaning of a song. I appreciate lyrics so much and knowing Taylor, she has some deep songs that even I still don't get the meaning😅😅. Overall, nice video!
As a fan of both Kendrick's and Taylor's song writing and storytelling skills, I really love this video.
Watching the Taylor and Kendrick reactors having the exact same moments to their own artists . .
Very cool video, brilliantly articulated.
I haven’t finished the video yet but on reading comprehension Taylor’s asylum lyric on TTPD was one moment were I was like damn some of you can’t fucking read bc people were posting photos of her childhood homes being like oh what an asylum! meanwhile she’s very obviously referring to being a teenager in the music industry
imo a lot of that is the new fans (not all of them, some aren't dumb). Swifties that been there for years would know what's up and they know how to analyse lyrics.
Her fanbase is so large it’s also full of children
That's honestly bad faith interpretation by people, not by swifties. Most of the people who made those statements do understand what she was saying but they'll take any opportunity to be unfair to her work
people don’t realize that the fact that pictures of her childhood home are so readily available IS the asylum, people posting pictures of it to hate on her are only proving her point
Kendrick's got a damn Pulitzer! "Damn is the recipient of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first time a musical work outside of the classical and jazz genres was honored."
Damn!
If anything all that shoild prove is kendricks music is only valuable to old leftist white men and not the actual people in his cult. Also obligatory ywnbaw
And sadly, he actually stooped so Low to dissing an artist he felt was below him despite his accolades. Now where's the genius in that, if it wasn't for clout? If there wasn't something in it for him would he even bother to do it?
I don't see the genius in his actions. I see a desperate attempt to clap back and stand on filthy ground only to claim victory. That's disgusting.
He should have assumed his position and kept the foolery at bay. But as always, because I speak for the dumb, I appear to be dumb. DAMN.

Theyre different genres thats it. Lyrical/musical genius doesn’t matter in genre. Give Taylor her props because she does with Pop what Kendrick does with Rap. @@roshiiirohoe
@@Guiu-fo6tv most objective take from a taylor defender ive ever witnessed and for that i'll fw ya

I'm a huge swiftie and a casual listener of Kendrick Lamar, I had no idea he did easter eggs!! I'm gonna have to join in on the fun i guess 👀
The water’s fine jump in! 😂
Exactly .
Hey Drake, you are slow.
@@Loverapten lmaoo
Omg so that's where he got it from!
If we could harness the collective power of the Swifties to hunt for easter eggs, we could legit eliminate our dependency on fossil fuels.
"Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go give him a Grammy right now" speaks more about Drake than a diss
Yup. He also tried to call This Is America overrated, too. Lil b1tch...
No, it speaks to the fact that his music appeals mostly to the leftist establishment then to the blacks he supposedly makes music for
What makes this even more apparent is that they’re friends. Both have said how much they respect eachother’s music. Kendrick fans are really smart, and so are Taylor fans if you exclude the 10 year olds with cruel summer on repeat, especially folklore/evermore fans.
Folklore/Evermore are two of my favorite albums of hers, along with 1989. Don't hate I know it's pop but it is an incredible pop album and Taylor has won a lot of awards for it.
I am a Swiftie and a Kendrick fan. I am so glad someone is seeing the connection
I'm more of a swiftie than a kendrick fan but i like the take about songwriters, audience participation and artist aura.
This beef has exposed me to so many new to me channels, scanning back thru your earlier vids, yeah I'm gonna sub to you.
The Top Dog story is also about Kendrick’s father seeing Top Dog as a man too to be respected. This is one way we carry each other’s burdens. That one Act had God show Kendrick’s dad what his humility did b/c he didn’t judge top dog.
Taylor and Kendrick are top tier artists
I became a swiftie because of the easter eggs!! And ofcourse because of the good music.
as a swiftie and casual kendrick fan i absolutely loved this! i enjoy story telling more than everything in the world, thats why i love tays music so much and listen to it almost exclusively, but will come back to kendrick and other artists with great story telling once in a while. i do have to admit that actively listening to these storys cause some sort of superiority complex iykwim but i love that every person has the chance to educate themselves through music! especially literature analysis vice versa. analyzing lyrics and casual literature i enjoy actually helped me a lot in school, for example with readi g comprehensions.
so thank you for this video! i really enjoyed it and believe it can educate many people about the importance of actively training your attention span through listening to music!
not sire of thos was comprehensible, not a native english speaker :)
i started in swift's catalogue before kendrick's and the amount of people who never read through lyrics was crazy to me, like it's a central part of the music and you're not reading lyrics at minimum first listen??
Oh man I love when media critics affirm literacy and reading comprehension, instant follow!
Smart overview! Honestly, I'm a Swift fan, and am now looking forward to listening more critically to Kendricks albums!
As an avid fan of both musicians, I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Very thoughtfully pieced together, and very good input!
Just wanted to say thank you. I came on here originally like a year ago bc of your Taylor swift videos, but I didn’t know I would find love for Kendrick Lamar too. Without your videos I never would have thought about listening to him.
"his reading comprehension is, terrible." 🤣🎯
Drake's "all my stuff is facts" line or whatever it was, before he tails off, when 99% of smart people listening knew he got Mother I Sober wrong.
Yes! I really thought that maybe people have bad reading comprehension or blatantly playing stupid just to hate.
I didn't know Swift did that too. Props to her
People who enjoy music did.. not exactly fans but people who genuinely enjoy all genres of music. I'm not a Taylor fan, but I'm a music and artistry fan. Open your horizons, you might surprise yourself

I love that you bring us our Kendrick Lamar / Taylor Swift crossover information. ❤

This is seriously the coolest series youve ever done!

As a Kendrick, Taylor and Matilda fan I feel so seen
The way you talk with compassion about Mr. Lamar's music makes me want to dissect his lyrics
Yep. Kendrick music is necessary
It's not even just the lyrics, it's the pronunciation, rhythm, pacing, emotion, tempo, story arc, narrative. Sometimes even just the confusion and then the clarity, or vice versa.
It's an entire journey.

DAMN is at 34 (week 379), good kid m.A.A.d City at 42 (week 612)

From memory isn't that the line when you first really notice it's Kobe he's turned into.
The way Kendrick looks hard straight at the camera as he says it and you're like "wow, that went from generic looking person to full on Kobe in a split second".
When I was young, dad used to explain lyrics (mostly Eminem, pac, etc.) while we drove in the car. That may have had an effect on my music tastes now as I think I evolved from his tastes into story of soundscape as well (since I rly like instrumentals)

Agree, also The last Great American Dynasy was about She ( he) was mad , bad and dangerous to know ( What Oscar Wild said about himself) basically Taylor was saying that there were parallels to Rebecka and now the neighborhood has her and again that sort of free spirit and she bought the house.
