9:50 no, no, no. You've missed the point here. Lily Allen is absolutely correct to say that musicians and bands performing and releasing for free has the effect of devaluing music. Why pay for music when it's free? Nobody can deny this, we see it all around us nowadays. Radiohead didn't do that deliberately but it is true that only a secure and successful band could ever do this and have any success. The thing that sounds identical to the record labels is you, ironically, with your message that anybody can make it in this model if they just work hard and have good music. That's not the case. People were prepared to pay willingly for In Rainbows because it's Radiohead. Nobody will willingly pay for an album by Johnny Nothing and the Nomarks, no matter how mind-blowing the music is.
@James Schultz * Est.1982 man daily mail is for sure in my top 3 Radiohead songs. Listening to the basement version really unlocked TKOL for me. When I first heard it, thee regular version felt like an electronic Thom Yorke album and a slightly flat. but when they performed it live, it became so much bigger, every song acquired an amazing unique character, and each musician made himself present. It's amazing.
Just to add some thoughts to this thread, specifically regarding James & Pedro mentioning the basement sessions; there's something about all of the songs played 'From The Basement.' The Mix was incredibly on-point, meaning where every instrument sat frequency-wise in the overall mix added brightness yet also some crunchiness (Bass for example, and/or the punch of the drums) to the instruments, and while watching each member play their part, every instrument was audible & distinguishable on its own, yet sat perfectly in the mix as a whole. I prefer the from the basement versions of almost every song vs the studio/album versions specially for those reasons. And of course, not only was the mix on-point, of course Radiohead themselves were on-point and 'in the pocket' as well. Lastly, one of the reasons Radiohead is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time, is because they've never stagnated creatively; it's not that they "reinvented themselves" for each album, but they absolutely didn't try to recreate the sounds or vibes from a previous album. They've continued to move forward creatively & sonically every album, but as the video mentioned, the songs and albums are without question distinctly Radiohead. I think being able to make that statement for a band is few & far between, especially in the (current) age of recycled, resampled, remade, nauseous excessive radio play times that we live in. So for me, Radiohead haven't ever put out an album or song that I'd consider lackluster or don't enjoy listening to all the way through. And then of course, they always have 1, or 2, or several songs on each album that I enjoy so much I end up playing it on repeat for hours or days or weeks. Anyway. Great video! And great discussion guys! Cheers, .-H.B.
The thing about In Rainbows that makes it stand above other Radiohead albums for me is that I don’t feel the need to listen to it within a certain context (mood, setting, time of day, etc.) to understand or enjoy it. It’s accessible, immediate, visceral, emotional, passionate, vibrant, colorful, romantic, melodic. It doesn’t really depress or disturb me like some of their other records do at times. I actually get a warm, happy feeling from listening to it
Exactly. On another in rainbows video someone said after listening to the album they have to listen to some joy division to cheer themselves up, I was like what?!?
nick - I got lucky (no pun intended) and watched them perform it on the Jonathan Ross show. Also seems to be one of the more accessible tracks when showing Radiohead to friends, especially those who can appreciate slower paced music. I like that you called it "a perfect synthesis of the sounds Radiohead embraced", I've always thought of it as their Abbey Road in that way (OK Computer is their Revolver and Kid A is their Sgt. Pepper's).
In Rainbows is a classic from start to finish. Videotape, All I Need, and Reckoner are my favorites! My dad and I did a review on our channel if you want to check it out! Great video Middle 8!
Also, at the time In Rainbows was released, music piracy was at it's absolute peak. You could find anything anywhere easily. They probably made more money with the pay what you want release than if they sold it traditionally.
Man, I remember when this album came out. I was a senior in high school and wasn't really into Radiohead at the time, but releasing it with the pay-what-you-want model still caught my attention. A teacher of mine was a huge fan and we spent 20 minutes of (english) class one day talking about it and him losing his mind over how much he loved the record. Now it's a favorite of mine too!
Jigsaw Falling Into Place has one of the best builds in any song I've heard. There's maybe one moment you notice a jump in intensity (when Thom goes up a key) but apart from that it's this slow, methodical build of every piece until the whole thing blooms. It's literally like a jigsaw puzzle - you don't notice the individual pieces going in, but by the end you somehow have this beautiful, complete work of art. Honestly one of the few songs I consider perfect.

My favorite Radiohead album of all time! After seeing them live on multiple occasions, I've noticed, they don't play a lot from In Rainbows. And I really really really wish they gave it the importance it deserves.
This was the video I stumbled upon one day that got me into Radiohead. From Radiohead, I learned more about the wider music world. Fast forward and I’m listening to 10-20 albums a month, exploring new fields in music, and learning much more. Radiohead is now my favorite band of all time. Thank you, Middle 8.
Honestly, I think in In Rainbows is my favorite Radiohead album. I know Ok Computer is looked at as their best, and it is fantastic, but I find myself listening to In Rainbows much more often. And from beginning to end. And I suppose since Radiohead is my favorite band, I guess that means In Rainbows is my favorite album, period. Lol, I guess I've never really thought too much about that till now. But yeah, in my 37 years of life I guess this is my favorite album. I'm cool with that.
Nude moved me to tears when I first heard it. The bass line, the guitar coming in after it, the vocals, the simple drums. Easily one of my favorite songs.
This album shaped my 20's and is responsible for me choosing a creative career. Monumental, emotional, concise, inspiring. My favorite record from my favorite band.
Someday I went into the internet and heard a band was giving an album for free. That's how I discovered Radiohead and I regret giving them 1 dollar to this day
B sides is where you can find some really true gems that never made it to album, no matter the artist. Some of my definitive favourites are b-sides. I think “like spinning plates” has a b side version that is so much better that the one that actually found the way to the album. Also another I remember off the top of my head that is completely off topic is “Quiet Steam” by Peter Gabriel. I am not particularly fan of him, but that version is something to give a try. Also some other golden nuggets in my head, but just seems out of reach in my brain at the moment. I am getting old lol.
@@roygalaasen I love the b-side tracks of Radiohead for me they are just other albums. The Amazing Sound of Orgy, Kinetic, Down is the new up, Go Slowly, Bangers + Mash, etc... just amazing.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I forget about it from time to time. I’ve recently rediscovered it and I can’t get enough of it again, one of my favorite little gifts I’ve given myself since quarantine. This album is perfect, every song so incredible.
I'm not an album guy, I just listen to random tracks but In Rainbows changed the view for me because I discovered my 4 favorite Radiohead tracks was from that album. I love everything about it: the melody, the harmony, even the cover is beautiful.
In rainbows is my favourite album of all time. I can’t count how much I’ve listened to this. To me, it’s the epitome of Radiohead. It’s so beautiful and there is not a bad song on there (at least not on disc 1). Everything is tear-wrenchingly, hauntingly beautiful.
Funniest thing about In Rainbows is that's its the rock album everybody expected to be a follow-up to Bends. However, after OKC and KidA releasing a more straight-forward rock album.was the unexpected move.
Yeah, Reckoning is just an exquisite masterpiece. I love this album more and more each time I listen to it. That, to me, is a good sign that it's a truly good album.
YOU ARE ALL I NEED YOURE ALLLLL I NEEEEEEEEEEED stuck in the middle of your picture damn dude that outro hit my inner teenager, and described why this album became so much better when i got older.
That's still all on U2 and Apple man. So many ways they could've done the free album and they chose the most annoying way possible. They could've just said, "hey we are releasing a new album, you can choose to get it from the front page of iTunes" instead they shove it in your library without consent or warning like a bunch of arrogant head asses. It was probably Bono's idea
this is 100% what I thought when they showed the U2 quote, I never would've thought that this could be linked to that. major butterfly/hurricane reaction.
actually U2 was offered 10 million dollars by Apple to allow Apple ownership of the album for a month - in that month Apple pushed the album on their patrons. U2 gets the blame and haven't whinged about Apple's "gift" (protect the payee, I suppose). What would you have done? @@yummycookies58

That's how I discovered Radiohead and I regret giving them 1 dollar to this day
This is the question i have been asking myself, HOW ON EARTH HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS BAND BEFORE??
Weird fishes changed me like no other song did. Extremely sad and inspirational at the same time.
Love your stuff man... as a Radiohead lover, this was exciting
a video on each radiohead album would be awesome.
Ah, finally. A Middle 8 video about my favorite Radiohead album.
in rainbows is a perfect abum, it has no weak songs
The B-Side tracks from this album are just as good as the main tracks!
Radiohead is the flagship band of patriarchy, white privilege and Anglocentrism of the last 30 years
@@pablo_6180 Are you ok?
@@iknownothing4661 You need to read more about patriarchy, white privilege and Anglocentrism in society and therefore in art
This is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I forget about it from time to time. I’ve recently rediscovered it and I can’t get enough of it again, one of my favorite little gifts I’ve given myself since quarantine. This album is perfect, every song so incredible.
In Rainbows is my favorite album of all time, House of Cards is me and my girlfriend's love song, that album makes me feel so many things.
Wonderful song..
I'm not an album guy, I just listen to random tracks but In Rainbows changed the view for me because I discovered my 4 favorite Radiohead tracks was from that album. I love everything about it: the melody, the harmony, even the cover is beautiful.
"If it's not In Rainbows... cheer up, kid."
Hah. That hit me.
(My favorite is either OK Computer or A Moon Shaped Pool, I can't decide.)
Reckoner and house of cards are my go to ✨
Reckoner is so good. So good.
reeeeeeeeeeeeeeckoneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer
Funniest thing about In Rainbows is that's its the rock album everybody expected to be a follow-up to Bends. However, after OKC and KidA releasing a more straight-forward rock album.was the unexpected move.
In rainbows a straight forward rock album wtf😂
Reckoner is probably my favourite Radiohead song, just so incredible
Great stuff man, all your Radiohead vids have been fascinating and this one was no different
Your break away from Radiohead is finally over and back with, not only mine, but a great deal of Radiohead fans' favourite album! Thank you
Yeah, Reckoning is just an exquisite masterpiece. I love this album more and more each time I listen to it. That, to me, is a good sign that it's a truly good album.
The graphics in this video are amazing. Keep It up!
I listened to In Rainbows for the first time thanks to this video and God damn, what a beautiful album, All I Need is such a masterpiece :)
YOU ARE ALL I NEED
YOURE ALLLLL I NEEEEEEEEEEED
stuck in the middle of your picture
damn dude that outro hit my inner teenager, and described why this album became so much better when i got older.
I have never felt that any album after "In Rainbows" has had the passion or even imagination I came to expect from Radiohead.
You need to listen to A Moon Shaped Pool some more. It's a slow burn, but additional time with it pays off. A great late night headphone album.
Keep making these radiohead videos!
One of the greatest albums of all time 🤙
Super intriguing idea. I love Radiohead for their constant experimenting on all levels.
Nude to this day is the most beautiful song I've ever heard
in rainbows is my favorate album by them, it just sounds like they threw everything they had done before into the album, i love it so much.
First radiohead album I've heard and still my favorite
I've been waiting for this video for soooooo long! Thanks man. Such a good vid. Keep doing these videos! I love watching them.
So radiohead is to blame that U2 decided to put their album in everyone's iTunes library without us being abel to delete it. Smh
Jigsaw falling into place and Nude are my favorite of the album
My favorite Radiohead album
The editing in this video is absolutely fantastic! Love it.
This is one of my top 10 albums so I’m glad it got some love
I’ve never been a Radiohead hardcore listener but I’m loving this series. I can remember crying the first time I listened to In Rainbows; blissful.
