I can't speak for everyone...but I think 3 bedrooms are usually desired by families...and families like the feel of a house that a townhouse offers (their own front door and multiple levels) plus the fact that they can get (not always) outdoor space and a garage. Plus, maintenance fees tend to be significantly lower with townhouse developments. All making townhouses an increasingly popular option. Note in Vancouver we have a tiny amount of 3 bedroom condos. These are starting to be built a little more often now, but they are always small (due to the high price of land) and so the space feels very cramped. Building on multiple levels saves land cost and so Townhouses can be built more efficiently.
Well. A townhouse usually means your own front/backdoor, more privacy, having a front/back garden. Also, townhouse might mean it's quieter too--- only sharing 1 wall with a neighbour.
Townhouse is superior to an.apartment in most people's eyes (mine included). I don't want people living over me (hearing them stomping around). I want a backyard of some kind. I want it to feel like a house.

Yes, there is what we call the property transfer tax in BC. Every time a property is sold the buyer must pay 1% on the 1st $200,000, 2% from $200,000 to $2,000,000, 3% from $2m to $3m and 5% over $3m. Pets can be a challenge depending on whether you are buying or renting and depending on what type of property you are buying (if buying). But yes, landlords and stratas can restrict pets or not allow them at all. That’s right @joaki2711! In BC we use the term “strata fee” (sometimes just “maintenance fee” or maybe “condo fee”) rather than what we see most commonly south of the border, “HOA fee”. We call the legal division of land between multiple owners a strata and don’t have a legal entity called an HOA. I’m assuming you are watching from the US? :)
Actually I'm watching all the way from Sweden@@LivingInVancouver-BC. Here in Sweden it's called "bostadsförening" in english thats "Home/Housing association"
Oh, that happens here in Canada, too. Our system isn't quite as left-leaning as Sweden, nor as right-leaning as the US...it's a bit in between. But, we do have public healthcare. If you get sick here, then it's also covered by the taxes you pay. The criticism here is that wait-times can be lengthy for getting surgeries, getting seen at an ER or even trying to find a family doctor can be a challenge.

The biggest difference is the taxes we pay in Sweden goes to the public sector. Exampel; if you get sick and need surgery, it's already paid for.
