My favourite Barry score. I saw the film three times when it opened in 1980.
Everytime I watch it I enjoy it, and I love the score. Can't understand why people didn't like it.

I was brought to tears watching this movie! I have watched it over and over and it makes my heart swell each time that ship breaks out of the ocean waters. I can hardly believe that it wasn’t well received at the box office! It’s simply amazing and wonderful! The music is awe-inspiring! (Lynnette Gleason posting on my son’s account.)

It’s a beautiful movie based on a bestselling book by Clive Cussler. A Cold War potboiler. But the movie was made just a few years too late. The real story that Cussler clearly knew more than he should have was by that point well publicized and more interesting. For those that missed it much of this story pulls from the true story of Howard Hughes Glomar Explorer and its secret mission in plain daylight, of lifting and stealing a sunken Soviet Ballistic Missile Sub from the ocean floor. Heck even the actual search for and finding of the Titanic was itself a Cold War potboiler. Woodshull Oceanographer Dr Robert Ballard’s stirring mission to locate and photograph the Titanic was just a cover story. Prior to joining Woodshull Ballard had been part of the U.S. Navy’s most secret divisions. Charged with finding new ways to track and if necessary hunt down Soviet Subs. To recover anything from the ocean bottom for intelligence purposes. The US Navy funded his Titanic mission. It’s purpose was to test out a ton of new search and recovery gear. By finding the two lost US Nuclear Subs. The USS Thrasher and the USS Scorpion. Only after finding those two ships was he to go after the Titanic. Ballards new gear worked perfectly. He found the two subs with 12 days remaining to go for the Titanic. All without the Soviets suspecting what was going on. You might remember Dr. Ballard. He was on TV a lot. He used to have an end segment at the end of Seaquest DSV. For many years he was one of the Navy’s best secret assets, operating in plain sight on tv. Like I said the movie flopped because the reality was actually better.

I totally agree with you .. both about the film and of course this theme music. I love it so much, I asked my daughter to download the music to the film onto my Tablet for me.
I think it is my all-time favourite theme by John Barry. I have many books and have watched so many videos and documentaries, about RMS Titanic, and
I also have both "Raise The Titanic" by
Lew Grade, and "Titanic" by James Cameron in my collection, the former sadly only on video so I cannot watch it, as have no device for it, but have the latter on DVD so maybe still can watch that if I can find the lead to plug the dvd player in... This music though, helps bring the story to life I have watched it so many times that I miss the scene where Anne Archers character, Dana (?) doesn't like "put the wormy on the hooky" , whenever that scene is cut when the film is shown in TV..

With its echoes of 'Born Free', 'Out of Africa', 'Dances With Wolves' and even its contemporary 'The Black Hole' (and some Bond films to boot), this one seems to trump them all - my God, that main theme is just so beautiful, an apotheosis of a kind, a singular icon of the Barry sound (with that tell tale use of French Horn/trombone)...I remember hearing it as a boy when 'RTT' was broadcast as one of those 'major television events' (really meaning, 'We need to recoup something in this big, big loss') and being transfixed...

It's such a shame the original score only exists married to the film. Lew Grade probably had the original score tapes destroyed. Such a marvelous score should not go unheard. The rerecording of this score was done with the original arrangements so outside of the film it's the closest thing we've got to a complete score. Such an incredible listening experience.

My daughter downloaded it for me on my Tablet so I can enjoy this theme whenever I like.. Sadly, I only have the film on video tape but have no device upon which to play it. .
This theme music goes a very long way to make up for that lack, though and just hearing the opening theme, plus the theme over the end credits and the rather eery music as the underwater search for Titanic plays, and the scene set (I think) in a Cornish seaside village pub, where Sir Alec Guinness character asks Dirk Pitt to take Titanic's red ensign and return it to her stern flagpole, ". where it belongs", all helps me to recall the scenes and reminisce.
(Apologies for typos and misspellings, I am recovering from cataract surgery and my vision is still blurry. Next eye op due at the end of August but first I shall be 70 this coming Thursday, 3rd August...

Lew grades finest moment -NOT!! Raise the titanic cost zillions to make and failed at the box office - BUT! - John Barry’s theme music is to die for! I have never encountered such an emotive piece of music-I’ve been listening to this on and off since 1980 after seeing the film at the cinema. It’s not such a turkey as was made out.....
This posting captures the 3 main arrangements used in the film - probably directly from the soundtrack of the film but I am so surprised that there is not an elongated arrangement showcasing how beautiful John Barry’s score is sourced directly from the soundtrack. Surely in this day and age it could have been achieved......the theme to raise the titanic is quite simply an awesome piece of music!

    I love this theme music.
I also enjoy the film, despite its obvious inaccuracies due mostly to the wreck if the RMS Titanic not being discovered until some years after this film was made...
However, as the story by Clive Cussler was mainly fiction, the film is not spoilt for me. Yes, if she could have been raised from the depths of the North Atlantic, in one piece, how great that might have been . Though if course, she would not have been in such a glorious condition as she first appeared as she rocketed to the surface, releasing the trapped submersible, Deep Quest, as she rose, but that is fiction for you.
This theme by John Barry, as always with his excellent film scores, the scene where Titanic rises up and the waves pour from her hull like confetti, truly does her proud and I can listen to it over and over again as I recall that scene in my mind... If only Titanic had been in a suitable condition to be raised, and if it had been possible to do so, how marvellous it would have been to see her sail, albeit under tow by straining tugboats, onward to her destination...
Perhaps the spirits of her poor lost souls might've cheered her on.. or would they have wept because she had left them.
We shall never know, but just as Rose , in James Cameron's version of Titanic, eventually was reunited with her newfound but lost love, Jack, so too did Titanic remain forever, rusting slowly in peace and guarding her passengers and crew until she finally departs from the world, except in our memories
Long may we remember her, her lost souls and the errors which led to their sad demise. Let the lessons be learned and not be repeated. Unlike Titan, too.
    Titanic 1912
    Titan 2023
    Rest In Peace. ❤️

A funny thing about this movie is one of the actors who appeared in this movie. British Actor Alec Guinness appeared in Raise the Titanic when it was released in 1980 as a surviving crewmember of the sunken ship. However, in real life he would have never been on the ship because 1: Mr. Guinness would have been too young to ever have served as a crew member and 2: Mr. Guinness would have never been a passenger onboard the ship because he wouldn't have been born yet. Mr. Guinness was born in 1914 which was two years after Titanic sank in 1912. How very funny!?!?!?

An unfortunate adaptation of Clive Cussler's rousing adventure. John Barry's outstanding score "elevates" the proceedings .The producers obviously blew the budget on the music, and the majestic towing of the freshly raised Titanic into New York Harbor. They could have come up with a better script.
