  • If you weren't at Avery Fisher Hall on February 17 to see Maury Yeston and Peter Stone's musical Titanic in concert, fear not, because we have all you're gonna need. Here is a video of the show's full opening number and closer, featuring stars Michael Cerveris, Brian d'Arcy James, David Garrison, and company, backed by a 29-piece orchestra and 250-member choir.

      I was seventeen when I got to see this. The performance, the voices, the costumes, the stage design, the storyline, everything were spectacular!!!! I still cry every single time listening to the original score soundtrack of the musical. If this show make a rival comeback I'm there first thing at a ticket booth. This show got best musical in "97, and took home countless awards and numerous recognitions. This is truly a gem within itself.

      Same. I remember him because I looked at my Playbill at intermission to check his name. I don't do that often. I knew he was a star.
      Two other memories stand out. The piano rolling across the stage. And, I think it was the end of the first act, the stage became reflective and you saw the small image of the ship on the horizon. I have some memory that each person in the audience was assigned a name and you could check to see if you survived. (Or did I just come up with that in my imagination?)

    • @Nonamearisto
      @Nonamearisto 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@captainAlex258 Titanic's sinking was unique. Poetic even. A tragedy which could easily be taken as God rebuking humanity for hubris and recklessness. "God himself couldn't sink this ship." And focusing too much on luxury, size, and speed at the expense of safety, at the expense of human lives. And on its maiden voyage no less. The Titanic was in many ways a microcosm of at least British society at the time, with similar social stratification. It might have come to have been seen as judgment being passed on said society, given that the Titanic was perhaps the greatest technological expression of that society to date, and a major investment to boot.

If you watch the two companion videos (rehearsals) you can see how delighted he and many others are to be reunited with the cast, and performing this music again. You can tell that they feel privileged to see each other’s exquisite performances. (Particularly the Marry Me/ Telegraph duet). We were very fortunate to have seen Titanic on Broadway. It’s a show that continues to resonate with us.

And I was fortunate to be there the night of this reunion concert that reassembled almost the entire original cast save for Victoria Clark (who was originally supposed to be there but then I guess ran into conflicts), Don Stephenson (who was directing this) and Larry Keith who had passed away. A truly great musical and for me, the superior telling of the Titanic story that appeared in 1997.

    Peter Stone wrote "Titanic" and "1776." They both have something in common; you know the endings, yet are still in suspense throughout the show. During "1776", it seems like they won't be able to bring the delegates together to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. In "Titanic", one hopes against hope that somehow the ship will not sink. In only one is there is a happy ending.

To be fair Michael Cerveris got some rhythms wrong, but he didn't need to be pushed around the stage. In his waning years I had to do that for a formidable basso who sight-read and memorized music at sight, but couldn't deal with a director who changed the blocking at every rehearsal. If you follow opera, you know this director's name.

    Wow orchestra is absolutely phenomenal here, especially Woodwinds and Brass I mean those high octaves are so hard to tune they don’t even get it right on the recording. Bravi

    HOW IS THIS FUCKING POSSIBLE! A one night only concert performance by the original Broadway cast and NO ONE FILMED IT! I don't want the opening number I want to see the play with the original cast. and an orchestra. Like they did for Les Miserables. And Rent, they filmed the final performance of Rent. But Titanic? Nope. FUCK!

    • @7rippster7
      @7rippster7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joshua Plotkin Both Les Miz concerts were in London. I've noticed London and other European cities will often film a musical, or theater event and later on offer it for sale. Kind of sucks.
      Every Broadway show is filmed, but for archival purposes only. Actually, if they did film them and offer them for sale, it would probably cut down alot on the bootlegs. A quality dvd would also make money for the production.
      But alas... nope.

      I have a full audio recording (I was there). It's kinda muffled, but I have it. I also found a video of the Dutch production of Titanic. I'd love a bootleg of Blue's Clues Live; Nickelodeon is no longer putting on that show. Hopefully anybody out there who grew up with the show could ask them to bring it back?
      I attend a lot of shows through Theater Development Fund's Autism Theatre Initiative (I'm #ActuallyAutistic) and I really want to film those shows because I like watching specific moments of the show repeatedly (ex. a certain line, the sound of the audience clapping). But they still tell me no, and I'm upset by that. I've actually had meltdowns over that before; thankfully one of them happened to be at an autism-friendly show so somebody came to help calm me down.
      Many people tell me, "just buy the cast recordings." I already do that. What I am talking about is more than just hearing the songs, it's reliving an experience. Then they say, "just buy tickets to the show again." Yes, I would love to do that. But the shows are often too loud for me, and both my social ineptitude and self-stimulatory behaviors make it difficult to cope. Also, the recordings are of a specific performance, different from others. I like to do the same thing over and over again. I want to relive certain things from the past. Most people just don't understand that.
      I can email you the audio tape privately if you'd like.

      It all involves contracts, royalties, recording payments for all union performers & musicians as well as requiring deep pockets to record, edit, market & present in any format.

    • @hawby7mgh
      @hawby7mgh หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your recording is (sadly) not legally permitted at any such Union entertainment event. There are good reasons for that.
      Not that I don’t agree that a professional recording would have been exciting.
      I was fortunate to attend this event. Wonderful evening.

    Oh, dear! I hate to pile on the poor Captain. I'm learning Captain Smith right now (two years older than the real Captain Smith, but more prepared that what we saw) and we haven't gotten to this part in musical rehearsals yet, so after banging it on the piano a few times, I thought I'd see how the opening goes so that I would be ahead of the game among a really intimidatingly talented cast. I don't think that's how it goes for the Captain. To be fair, I've got the score in my hands and Michael Cerveris gets some rhythms wrong too, but the Captain having to be pushed around the stage is sad. Again, to be fair, I directed a 25 yo in a Gilbert and Sullivan show (who had done two years in a Broadway show and two show tours before he moved back here to raise a family). Opening night he went up on his lines and hopped around the stage singing la-la-la for three verses of a song.
