Hi Nick! You were expressing concern about the low oil pressure at idle. In my experience, hot oil pressure of approximately 20-25 psi at idle may be a result of hi-performance anti pump-up hydraulic lifters. As soon as the accelerator is cracked open, the oil pressure goes to acceptable levels. The oil pressure variance can be valuable in a couple of ways! The high oil pressure part of this lifter only allows for the maximum lift without going to the point where the valve is getting pushed to far from the seat in case of a oil spike maybe caused by a stuck oil pump check valve. Another reason I like the anti pump-up hydraulic lifters is they help with the stopped idle performance that a high lift long, duration profile cam may negatively cause at low rpms. The high rpm value of performance cams still seem to keep their advertised value with these lifters as well. The lower rpm idle which can be of value when it comes vacuum operated items, lower stall torque convertors, brake drag, etc. The lower oil pressure in these lifters may have a slight ticking sound when idling, almost similar to a solid flat tappet cam. The other bonus is there usually a lot less valve adjustment periods that may be needed for most solid lift cams. High volume of oil flow at 20-25 psi, at idle should be more than adequate as long there isn't a problem oiling the top end of the engine such as the rocker arm assembly. In my opinion, oil flow volume to critical oiling points of the engine is more important than high oil pressure. Oil volume also takes less horse power to drive the oil pump at high rpm. Good luck with this awesome Hemi!!
A Monday afternoon, and the broken 426 Hemi is repaired and on the Dyno, and running a single 4bbl. I'm anxious to see what numbers this setup will make. I'm guessing around 500HP, and maybe a little more torque. Always happy to be here on Nick's Garage, the best channel on TH-cam!! Here We Go!!

Excellent video, I’m old school, just can’t do my own work anymore, but I really appreciate your attention to detail, it’s what makes the difference between a good tuner, and a great tuner! 👍
That is typical to comp retrofit hydraulic rollers. I will not put them in to any BB (or Hemi) engine. Sooner or later you will have problems. Have disassembled them and there is a steel plate with small holes in side that tends to split. I have converted several to mechanics retaining the hyd cam, just using very small lash like .004-.006".Works good.
Nick and George, excellent Monday Dyno Day !!! Enjoy watching Nuck work his magic on that 426 Hemi . Love to watch Nick just flow through the tuning process and correcting issues . Another get Dyno Monday !!!!
Wow that was pretty damn good Nick at just over 500 hp but cant wait for that crossram manifold & two four barrels to see what they make, great video Nick & George thanks.
Low oil pressure actions: 1. Change the oil and filter again. You may have knocked a bunch of debris loose and into the filter. 2. If oil pressire still remains low, especially at idle, then change the oil pump. I had to do these steps when I rebuilt a Ford 429 I found in a junk yard. 20 years later that engine is now in a boat, providing lots of power.
What a Super Cool Build. From what this started out to be…dropped valve etc!, the cross ram should be lots of fun. Can’t hardly wait. Great job guys!!!

I love your experience and expertise on the gas engine you are a joy to watch it is like a artist at work my friend. looking forward to doing business with you later
Hey Nick both those carbs you tested have replaceable high speed bleeds. If you were to order a set of 4 bleeds 0.005" larger and a set of 4 bleeds 0.005" smaller you'll soon find how quickly you can do a mixture change (minor, about 2 numbers on the main jet) without having to drain down and pull the fuel bowls. I do that all the time on the dyno as a quick check to see what the engine prefers for mixture. We have one of the Holley 950 UXP carbs as a dyno carb, it comes stock with 0.032" high speed bleeds so I have a jet holder with 0.027" and 0.037" bleeds for quick back to back comparisons.
Hello Nicholas, Great show and attention to detail on this run. Your knowledge on these engines always impresses me. I never thought of no other than you on my 426 build. I am glad that it is there. Also, you are a cool and modest fellow. Thanks for the chat this morning. Kocan. Thunder Road!
You can’t use a heavy oil with a hyd roller lifter . No 20w50. You need an oil with a centistoke of 15 or less at 100 degrees celcius. Valvoline VR1 conventional 10w30 is good, Driven HR5 10w40, Castrol GTX 10w40 conventional. In the intro to your video, with the Thumper carb, the secondary blades were a long way from being wide open and 90 degrees to the throttle bore. Either throttle wasn’t opening all the way or someone messed with the secondary link rod.
It amazes me after all these decades of building the same basic design that even on this performance oriented Thumper Holley still hasnt come up with a way to change jets from outside the metering block instead of having to take the whole carb apart. I had an early seventies Opel Manta Rallye on which I had to replace the junk Solex two barrel carb with a MUCH nicer more modern Weber aftermarket rig that had jets you just unscrewed from the outside and screwed new ones in took five minutes, no need to drain fuel play with gaskets, bolts, fittings etc its was one of the easiest to tune carbs ive ever seen and it even came with two extra jets as options. Holley already has externally adjustable floats and being able to swap jets externally would be the perfect companion tuning feature.
Im thinking of a 426 Hemi in a 69 Chrysler 300 convertible but with a single Carter AFB and yea, its simple, a good 550hp and 595 ft lbs of torque. Hydraulic roller cam is good and roller rocker arms. The car will be a late summer and fall highway cruiser, will bracket race her in the beginning, just to see what she will run in the quarter mile. Should be a good mid 12s. Especially with all that weight and running 3.73 gears.
Hey Nick,...Big Thx for putting up the 426 hemi Dyno Test & Tune info....Can you share the Camshaft Specs with us ?? ......Can't wait to See the Cross-Ram pull video !!
Seems to be a very common thing anymore with hydraulic roller lifters not holding oil. Seems to be almost as common as new flat tappets wiping themselves out
George/Nick Last video you said the dyno cell is reinforced concrete, bullet proof glass, and filtered air in. But the side door is always open where the engines get wheeled in. Why is it so? Shaun, Mt Gambier, South Australia. 👍🇦🇺
That door usually stays open for more ventilation. But it’s not a safe place to stand. Also, the door to the control room is not reinforced, so the best place to be is behind the glass.. or watching on TH-cam. 😉
Hello, I just wanted to ask..wouldnt the 4 Barrel be a much better choice in a driver? The spread board is more for flat out racing? Wouldnt the 4 idle better in traffic and be less tune trouble than the spread ? Dont get me wrong I think the spread board is very cool. Thanks and great video.
Every time I watch you change jets to make it run a little richer, I'm thinking to myself; why not just try installing the air cleaner? If air cleaner makes it run a little richer, then that's how it will be when it's installed in vehicle anyway... Although, I like the open throttle view down the carburetor as well, that is pretty cool.
Nick, Watching the dyno videos takes me back to early child hood when I had to climb onto the fender of a car being worked on and driving my brothers nuts asking "What can I take off or what is this or that" and my mother would not let them run me off LOL and as a result I learned a lot at an early age.
Well, that was more fun than a barrel of monkeys! 😊 Nice setup and tuning. With the Cross Ram setup you should be able to get 550 HP or close to it. That's more than just a cruiser, that's a crusher.
I think with some more RPM’s that single 4 can get there, this motors wants to rev more I would say it’s good for 6500 as it’s pulling easy and each time he backs off at 5500 or 5800 it sounds like it’s just getting going.
It's metal and it's heavy Nick is busy testing a wicked cool Hemi On Nick's Garage the winter snow has descended but that won't stop Nick from getting a Hemi mended Amongst muscle car folks He comes highly reccomended because he's got classic muscle and modern performance perfectly blended
Nick 14 Degrees Fahrenheit Not bad still above Zero Now -10 Below is cold -20 Below Real Cold -040 Below is Friggin Cold -60 is G-ddamn Cold Great Videos Thanks From Aurora, Ohio it's 35 Degrees F
I was beginning to fear that we weren’t going to hear the rest of this story but now I’m smiling. I hope Nick can get the rest of the bugs out but this engine seems to fight him at every turn. Good luck with the cross ram setup. 🥸👍👀✅❗️
Nick do you start any of your muscle cars (70 Challenger 440) during the winter in storage or do you just let set and start in spring? In spring do you just turn over and over and start or do you remove distributor and prime engine with drill motor?
For many years I just get in my car and just crank it over. It takes a while to fill the carb with fuel and by then the oil pump has started flowing oil.
You didn't mention the CFM of the current 4 barrel carbs, the first, then the "Thumper carb" you installed. It will be interesting to see what the two cross-ram carbs set up will provide for fuel / CFM Air. Good stuff, Thanks Nick.
Nick/NG team, whats the specs on the cam that went into the engine? Is its power range matched to be compatible with the cross ram like it should be? Or is it just a generic off the shelf cam, and the x ram is going on just "because"? I'm just wondering so we'll know why it performs the way it does - good or bad - when the next video is posted.
Hemi Heater works well Nick!! George another great video 🙏😁
Already snow in Montreal. Here in Toronto nothing but rain
Love the look with the Cross Ram intake ,
It will definitely turn some heads!
On this Thumper Carb you can adjust fuel ratio from the Air Bleeds. Which are just above the Air Horn. I went with Jets for what is common ..
Thanks for that lesson!
It's 42° outside right now in Chicago. And it's supposed to get 49 to 50° by this weekend. We don't get the winners no more I don't know why winters
Global warming lol..
I'm not complaining. 🙂 Phooey on Old Man Winter.
I lived in Chicago for a while back in 1995. My car battery froze the first week! Lucky there was an Auto Zone close by!
Hemi Powered Monday is a Good Monday 👍
Seems to be a very common thing anymore with hydraulic roller lifters not holding oil. Seems to be almost as common as new flat tappets wiping themselves out
That valve head sure went for a ride!
You got that right!
Hi Nick and George! I sure enjoy your videos of everything Mopar!
George/Nick
Last video you said the dyno cell is reinforced concrete, bullet proof glass, and filtered air in.
I hope there will be a dedicated episode for the black Corvette.
Best way to get through winter is, don't count it by months or weeks...count it by paydays, nothing goes by quicker than a Payday
My dad used to say to get a 6 month loan and winter will fly by.
Hemi Rockers- that’s so cool. Thanks Goerge!
Good job reviving the ultimate Mopar engine.
Best vehicle in Nick's garage that we hardly see is that white Ford ranger..
Old faithful.
Awesome show a engine repaired and and running strong again my guess on the cross ram setup is 40 more hp
Thanks for watching?
Thanks for sharing it sounds great.
Thanks for listening. 😃
Nick,
Watching the dyno videos takes me back to early child hood when I had to climb onto the fender of a car being worked on and driving my brothers nuts asking "What can I take off or what is this or that" and my mother would not let them run me off LOL and as a result I learned a lot at an early age.
I don’t know what it is but those thumper carbs seem awesome. Hoping to get my hands on one one day.
They are! Domenic builds cool stuff.
Great content thanks for sharing
Nick 14 Degrees Fahrenheit Not bad still above Zero Now -10 Below is cold -20 Below Real Cold -040 Below is Friggin Cold -60 is G-ddamn Cold
Great Videos Thanks From Aurora, Ohio it's 35 Degrees F
I agree. LOL.
My favorite go to place every Monday. Thanks for the upload Nick👌...Next week will be Interesting to see P2.✌
No problem 👍
Nick i enjoyed watching you tune this engine!
I really like your choices of background music.
GOOD JOB NICK-GOOD JOB/MOPAR NICK AT WORK/WHAT BRAND OF HYDROLIC ROLLER LIFTERS ARE THEY/ARE THEY NEW LIFTERS/THANKS MUCH
All new.
In 1960 four, they came with an aluminum manifold. They didn't come out with a magnesium h p two until on nineteen sixty five nick
A stuck needle valve will really mess you up! Its very good to know that im not the only one agravated wt a hyd roller! I thought it was bad lifters
Interesting video Nick !.....What type/Material oil pump Drive/ distributor Gear is customer using ?
Brass for Roller cams.
I was beginning to fear that we weren’t going to hear the rest of this story but now I’m smiling. I hope Nick can get the rest of the bugs out but this engine seems to fight him at every turn. Good luck with the cross ram setup. 🥸👍👀✅❗️
Really enjoy your show Nick !!
Sorry. Carb is a 750 CFM.
