I am 77 years young and still have my Machinery's Handbook. I used it often during my career from technician through VP of Engineering & Technology and finally, Pres of a company. Thx for the vlogs and content! God bless!

Just loved this video! I am a bookofile. When I was at the power plant they gave me an old copy of the " The Machinist's Handbook". Wow what a reference! Just learned about a few more from you. I will look for these at book sales and old book stores. Thanks Lyle !!

Any of the old instructional books published by Audel's are also somewhat useful, and cover many technical fields. Although some appear to be rather introductory, they are generally cheaply had at garage sales, flea markets, etc. Recently, an industrial trainer for a large local municipality was searching our larea for any old copies he could find. They use them for designing industrial training programs.
The Baumeister-Marks handbook was especially valuable to me when I took the exam to become licensed as a Registered Professional Engineer. It was the only book I used. Yes. I passed.
Books obtained through an inheritance are particularly valuable to me, mostly for sentimental reasons. I have old books from my great-grandfather's apprenticeship as a carpenter (at the beginning of the twentieth century) and also my father's old law library (from the early-middle 1960's). It's nice to see pencil their notations in these books that are an enduring record of their thoughts at the time.

Computerized inventory programs used by libraries have resulted in me being able to buy all sorts of books cheaply. I always go to eBay and search for what ever I am looking for and more often than not a copy shows up for less than $4.00 with book rate shipping included. They are library cast offs complete with the protective plastic over the dust cover and all of the library stamps, tags and markings. The libraries run the program every so often and find no one has checked out War and Peace in a couple of years so it gets deep sixed to make room for Video Gaming for Idiots or some other contemporary literary monument.
The same program has contributed to the death of many Mom and Pop hardware stores. They computerize the inventory and find that no one has bought a 1/4" black iron street elbow in five years, so they get rid of what they have and don't order any more. Then I come in, can't find one get, frustrated and decide to shop else where. Competition from the big box stores (they use the same program, don't have the odd ball stuff either, but have volume sales on their side) played the biggest part of the small stores disappearance but the inventory control has been part of it in my opinion (which isn't worth much). Around here, the small hardware stores that have survived are the ones with an inventory of dust covered merchandise along with the faster moving stuff.
    Thanks for another good video.

One important thing worth mentioning ... regardless of the age of the book a lot of the information is proven and doesn't change with time.
PS it occurred to me that all this Ebay activity you are engaged in should be carried out with caution.

I studied to be a mechanical draftsman in 1967 and the very first thing we were told was, "buy a copy of the Machinery Handbook," which I dutifully did. We used it daily when we were told to draw a particular part such as a nut, bolt, gear, etc. I still have it and I have my brothers later edition (1980's I think) that he used when he retrained as a draftsman when he suffered a back injury. I treasure them both but I know my kids won't care a wit about them when it is time for me to downsize. Loved your video, other books I never heard about.

Fuller's Earth... We used it in the brake bands of our cranes on clam shell work.. Makes a brake hold with less effort on the brake pedal and the load will slide exactly as you want it to...It is also good in a friction that does not want to pull the load....

Lyle, Thanks For Taking Time To Show These Treasures Of Yesteryear. I'd Much Rather Look Through These Books For Something I'm Looking For Than To Try To Find It On The Internet. Actually I Can Find It Many Times Faster In A Book Then I Can On The Computer. I Have To Laugh Because This New Fangled Age Really Believes They Have It Over Us Old Timers.

My first Machinery's Handbook was the 21st edition (1979) when I worked in the Industrial Woodworking Machinery industry as a design engineer. I then went back to the Defense industry and retired in 2014. Things I needed to look up while in the machinery business were mostly there, but still lacking things I thought should be there. In the defense industry, it was almost useless, couldn't find 85% of the things I went to it to find. I had to develop my own resources.

My main reference is the black book, just because it’s easier. But the two most used items in my shop is the vintage drill and tap chart, it hangs on one of the doors and I refer to it almost daily. Also the decimal equivalent chart the other thing I use often. I went to eBay and purchased a older edition of Machinery’s Handbook for the simple reason the work I do at home it is appropriate for my shop. I do have a promotional Valenite book that I had for years that a rep handed me it is in my tool box. Another great video

You're not violating any copyrights showing a brief sample contents of the books. I don't claim to be an lawyer, did stay at Holiday Inn though.
My first Machinery's Handbook was the 20th edition. It's tucked away in my Gerstner tool chest. I don't recall all the one's I've collected over the years, I know I have a 5th edition a co-worker gave me several years ago that belonged to a family member. My latest is the 30th edition on CD ROM. I like the electronic version, it allows you to print off a page that you can draw out to the shop to use and not worry about messing up you nice desk edition with the elements of the shop. The other references you mention I have except for the Kent and the last one mentioned. The American Machinery's handbook, I managed to buy all 8 editions if it over the years, lot of old steam locomotive and train stuff listed in it. Wonder if it was for the railroad machinists/mechanics than general machinists? Enjoy your videos and my daily shop lessons I get from you. Ken S.

Hey Lyle, I have an eight edition handbook from 1930, which I refer to all the time. I find the older books have the information that I need rather than the newer editions as they tend to deal with the most modern of engineering details. I use contact cement (Weldwood) for repairing my books, they last a little longer. Great video, thumbs up.

    Mr. Pete,
I have the 22nd edition of the Machinery's Handbook that you have. When I bought my Southbend lathe in 1985, my father bought me a copy to go with it. He was a turret lathe machinist at GE. He worked on parts for marine steam turbines for ships.
I bought a large print edition of the 29th about 6 years ago. Far easier to read. A friend gave me a late 1940's edition of the Stanley and Colvin book. I have found it had some info not in the Machinery's Handbook. I have bought a number of technical and trade books for 1 or 2 dollars at our library. They seem to feel they are there for entertainment rather than learning these days.

When I first got interested in machining, I went looking to buy a Macinery's Handbook and I found it difficult to understand all the different editions of the book. There's a Toolbox edition, a Large Print edition, a Guide to Macinery's Handbook, and more. I had trouble understanding what was on offer from eBay and used book stores. I have pretty much sorted it out by now. However, I wonder if other newcomers to the craft might suffer from the same confusion. It would be great if you could take some time to explain the different editions on your channel sometime? As always, many thanks for sharing your knowledge as well as your sense of humorr.

Lyle, I too like books over digital medium, however I do prefer both. Main reason the digital medium I can print out a page and take it to where ever I am working and it can get all soiled up and not ruin a good book. But I am with you on this... I like a book for reference.. it is amazing just to thumb though the wealth of information. Also a book is not dependent on batteries to work.

Keep an eye out for very old reference books. They have information that is often edited out (book size constraints) of newer publications.
Back in the day, machinists and shops had to make tools and equipment that were very hard to come by commercially. You can find tips and work-arounds useful for the basement machinist as well as job shops in these books... just don't cringe when the instructions call for 1 pound of powdered asbestos to repair cracks in your heat treat furnace.

I bought the Morse cutting tool booklet and its companion on tapping for a buck apiece back in the '70's.
90% of the time I get the info I need from them, without dragging out Machinery's Handbook.
One thing I've found useful in the Morse tapping booklet is the table which shows the per cent of thread for a given tap by using different size tap drills. If I'm tapping a difficult to machine material , i might use an oversize tap drill to spare the tap and ME. If 60% thread will do the job , why grunt to get 75%? Or ,
    grunt/SNAP?

Thanks for the video Mr. Pete, I just ordered a 17th edition off ebay, i got already a 26th as pdf file but i find it also easier to find things from a paper book. I'm a really fast reader since I learned to read at age of 3 so i don't like the more slow feeling of reading the e-book.

Good stuff Mr. Pete. I have been picking up some of these books and reference booklets over time since you've been showing them. I'm with you on preferring hard copies over digital, they are portable, always available, the batteries never go dead, and with bookmarks your most used data is instantly at your fingertips.
You did show us a while ago that center drawer in the Kennedy toolbox is really for your sandwich! ;o) And the top is for placing grandchildren!

mr.pete books we have a giant library for watchmakers this is a lot of what you have to do to learn watchmaking. Green book F-4 Phantom Vietnam (watched my dad at work making the parts and that book was there). You are too young to know that whole book just yet Lyle, we will give you more time to read up, LOL..
The H. Gerstner tool chest top box does hold the book upright, as you say, our drawer has one in it some book anyways. We do not have the Black Book, will place it on the list. I am still training on the use of my teacher mr.pete222 share about the Optical Center Punch (went with Flexbar brand). Lance & Patrick.
