  • These are the signs we use with our Deaf Dogs Rocket, Coco & Dottie (and we have 1 hearing dog that knows them too); Coco has her CGC since she was 2 years old. I had some requests to include this video for a couple friends (and dog sitter) to see the signs we use, it was a low key video I made, hence the video being in my bedroom on my bed and no make-up on etc :) hope it is helpful.
    Deaf dogs are great, :) we love a website called deafdogsrock.com and highly recommend it if you are looking into adopting a deaf dog.

    We have had a number of deaf dogs over the years. One thing I teach them is to wink back to me if the answer to the question is YES. This sets up two way communication between the two of us. I like the fact that you also show combining signs into short sentences. This creates the ability to transmit complex ideas to the dog(s). Thank you for this great video.

    good stuff, thanks! my dog is not deaf, but I found that teaching him sign language for things like sit, down, and stay is useful in loud or crowded areas where i would normally have to shout or repeat several times due to distracting noises. my 6 month old poodle puppy already has the signs for 'sit' and 'stay' figured out. impresses people more than verbal commands too. I look forward to using your videos for training purposes often!

    I rescued the most wonderful dog, turns out he was deaf. During the 3 weeks it took me to find his owner, I quickly fell in love with him. 3 months later, the young owner needs to find him a new home, she thought of asking me to be his new Mom. I am so wonderfully blessed to be given this opportunity! I ordered a vibrating color last night & will pick him up today. This video will help me to build out vocabulary, Thank you so much Alisha!!! Really.

    Thank You for sharing, I use hand signs with my dogs,they can get distracted when We are outside trying to tell them something and I want them to concentrate on what I’m telling them. So they will see that additional I’m trying to tell them something, talking with my hands..it comes a bit easy to me because I’m Italian too!! LOL👍❤️

    What a great, informative video! I will watch this again to pick up some signs I don't know. We have a 9 month old deaf liver Dalmatian. He is learning signs, but slowly. We have his sister as well and she is hearing so we find ourselves talking to her and he simply follows her lead. I want to work more with him with signs. Both of them recently earned their CGC. The judge said Chance (the deaf Dal) was "the best dog" there that day hands down! (And that was out of about 20 Dals.)

  • @elwoodthebulldogman
    @elwoodthebulldogman 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now that I have had a deaf dog after having a hearing dog that knew a lot of "language" I realize how much communication is eye movement, facial expression, and body language. My deaf dog often does things I want him to do before I even sign - I talk to him also - and some is just contextual.

    actual ASL! our dog is hearing but our son is not :) we'll use snack for treat/you use special. heel! we'll use the sign for dog LOL. stop/enough. calm down for us is hands thumb to chest other hand thumbs at bottom of ribcage, palms facing down, pulse in a calming pace and visual in out breath. we do 'come' with both hands, pointer fingers out and jutting in to space requested. Dance sign is so fun! Thank you for this video! you have great ASL knowledge!

    Honestly, this is a great video. We adopted a puppy, a German Shepard/American Fox Hound and didn't know he was deaf. It became apparent and we had him tested and found out for sure that he is completely deaf. Gus is smart and we already started training classes and he is a rock star but obviously the clicker wasn't working for him. With these signs, I think he will do just fine. It also helped me to hear that you are able to bring him to the dog park, with close supervision. I am going to incorporate a lot of these signals right away. Thank you for posting this video.

    I adopted a female deaf Australian Blue Heeler a few months ago she was abandoned 2 times and I knew I wouldn’t abandon her. I had a couple surgeries and just now I’m ready to start training her she is 1 1/2 years old do you think she is still young enough to train all these signs to her. They said that she knew a few hand signals but I have tried them but she doesn’t really respond. They were using the number one sign for sit and all she would do is back up for me. She is VERY reactive and protective and also a bite risk. I need to work on her not bolting after people she doesn’t know and biting them. She has bitten when someone she didn’t know just walked into our home which we did not tell her it was wrong because this person was not supposed to be in our home but she has pushed the door open when a relative didn’t latch it and chased a neighbor down and grabbed her pant legs. I don’t want her to be put down for biting someone it’s my greatest fear but I don’t want her sequestered to the house because she might bite someone. This poor baby was abused and I think that is why she is this way but she deserves a chance at life. I went to look at muzzles to buy and it broke my heart just looking at them. Any advice you can give me I will be grateful for thank you for this video 💜🐾

    We just adopted a deaf Akita/Pit Bull mix neutered male, almost a year and half old. Been with us 2 days. Good temperament, little stubborn, or just not interested in looking at us for information (signs). We got him and he only knew SIT & COME. I'm sure there will be a huge adjustment period learning new signs, tricks, skills, rules, etc.

    • @SomeLikeItHomegrown
      @SomeLikeItHomegrown  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yep he just has to learn that good things come from paying attention to you ... he needs to learn to come to you when you sign his name or if you just sign come here by pointing to the ground by your side and treats come with that -- start with a smaller confined space that he is already used to and wait until he is a few feet away A. sign his name sign B. point to the ground near you WITH the treat in your hand while point. If he looks your way show him the treat the first time & when he comes to your side sign YES and open your palm to give it to him with lots of happy love and pets for a few seconds. Then wait a couple minutes when he thinks the treats are all done and do it again. On day 1 just do that over and over alll day at random. He will start to pick up on the motion of his name sign and pointing to the side of you means come to you (for treats) and gradually you will add more training requests to it in order to earn the treat, once he understands that in the 1 room start doing it in other rooms and then start in a confined yard too and eventually you will ease off the treats too. If he isnt interested in treats you have to find what makes him happy - sometimes it is a ball or toy instead :) Good luck! & Congrats!

      I am using a Dogtra 282 Pager Collar as well. I watched Panzertoo videos on fast recall, I wanted to be able to call my deaf lab if I needed to keep her out of the road and out of harms way. I have her trained to come back to me when she feels the vibration on her neck. I keep the nick and constant set to 0. The pager mode is mainly what I wanted, since she can't hear me call her. Just thought I would share in case you did not know about pager collars.

    Trying to learn a new language is hard and I can't seem to find a good partner for practice, language requires constant practice which is why, I imagine I've never actually succeeded.
    Hopefully, because I also need to focus more on my pet's training too I can do a little bit of both and at least become practiced with a few and get a good base started.

    I have a deaf Lab. She knows most of the signs your dogs do, except for bath I think. I do a couple of them different and probably not all quite correct as I had to learn from a book and the web. I also use the obedience ones that are typically used for sit, down, come. She also knows cheese, birds, bug, weave and a few other tricks. It is sad to see a deaf dog that does not know at least a few signs including "I Love You"!

    This is perfect! I'm hearing but I use ASL and didn't know the extent of which signs I could teach my puppy (which won't come home for a few more weeks). Do you just sign to the dogs constantly with speech or do you focus solely on specific signs one at a time to train them? Just curious - I'd like to have my plan down pat before the dog comes home :)

      Just like when you have a hearing dog at home, likely a person says a lot of words around them but during training time and when you are requesting something it is best to only focus on the behavior for 1 word at a time while they are young. Once they get several 1 word commands and are a little older you can start doubling up words/requests, and eventually as they get older and more trained they will understand a string of signs. During the day everyday however you can sign to them all you want..don't expect them to understand but they are smart and will pick up things, I'd say just during training make it completely clear what you want from them as you train. :) good luck & congrats!

    I must say, you are the master of signing to dogs. I counted 71 signs in your video, wow. Other signs you can add to your repertoire would be:
    To ask your dog(s) to “Show me what?” we point to our eyes, then to our chest and then shrug our shoulders with our hands out facing up. We trained our dogs to go to the item and touch it with their noises. We also have pictures on the refrigerator of various items that would normally be out of the reach, like cookies. We blend treats with lots of love, so that at the end of the day they don’t weigh a million pounds.
    Our two dogs know that we have established two way communication with them through signs and touch. In response, they communicate their needs back to us. For example, our sign to the dogs for them to receive a back massage is to hold our hands out flat and rotate our thumbs. In response, the dogs will sit with their backs facing us. The Blue Healer has trained us that when he pulls on our thumb, he wants a massage.
    I would love to see you work with your dogs. How old are they?

      Thank you :) Our oldest and only hearing dog Charlie is 8 (he knows the signs too), Coco is currently 7, Rocket is now 6, and we have a deaf Boxer too that came after this video name Dottie - she is 3. :) we have even more signs with them as things come up. The more dogs I have the less time I have to focus on making fun videos lol … and I don't think I will ever own 4 again after this. 3 was probably enough haha 4 is over flowing with doggy love. We have moved since I made this video, we now are located in the Seattle WA area. As of this year our dogs have their first grassy yard ever in their entire lives. They love it, life is good. :)

    You´ve created a lot of good signs for deaf dogs. But I dont really know how to train the dogs the signs. I´m sure you can make all these signs and your dog..how does he know what they mean? I´m about to get a deaf dog in a little bit and it would be great if somebody could explain me how that part works =)

    Hey there! I'm getting a puppy in May and I'd like to teach her ASL. I have degenerative hearing loss and require hearing aids currently. Crowds and anywhere noisy is difficult for me to interpret what's going on in conversation around me so ASL is very helpful. I want to know if it was difficult to teach your dogs sign language and also, is it possible to teach both English and ASL at the same time? Thanks

    • @SomeLikeItHomegrown
      @SomeLikeItHomegrown  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry this is a late response, teaching sign language was the easiest way 😊 and 3 of our deaf dogs have since passed away sadly and our only dog now is hearing but listens so much better with sign language

    We found a dog and she responds to sounds and she knows sit but she will only stay or stop jumping by doing the signs(I know ASL because my cousin is deaf).No one has claimed her and I hope we can keep her:) Is there is any reason that she would know ASL other then being deaf? Could she have had a deaf owner?

      awww that's too bad that you cant keep him. Our house is full now with 4 dogs and an 8 month old baby or I would consider it. You should reach out to DeafDogsRock.com they are very helpful with placing pups.

    As long as your body/sign language is consistent (that's the key), it doesn't matter what the specific symbols/gestures are! It's fully customizable! After all? It's communication! :)

    • @SomeLikeItHomegrown

      Yes but if you use actual sign language signs there's a chance that other people will know how to communicate with them too. Our dog sitters, vet office techs surprisingly knew some ASL, people in public, kids learning baby signs, you'd be surprised how many communication doors it can open for your pet using a known language.

      +mollycule Training dogs is a never ending process ;) it doesnt take them long to start picking up on the signs but to get them to actually use them you will sign to them all the time :) I suggest a lot of treats.

    Hi hun hope you see my comment and reply i've recently just got a dog she is 13 weeks been with me for about 2 - 3 only just realized she is deaf about 5 days ago, i can see the signs but how do they learn i feel dumb asking like i should already know she's a american bulldog i'm starting today with 3 seperate 15 min sessions a day any advice would be so grateful thanks

    • @SomeLikeItHomegrown
      @SomeLikeItHomegrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      she will learn the exact same way a hearing dog does...with 1 acceptation, you will use visual cues (signs) instead of vocal. If you take her to a training class it will work the same. repetition & reward

    Hi Alisha,
    We've been looking for a companion for our dog and today I came across a 4yr old deaf jack russell terrier. I'm thinking of adopting him but I worry that training will not go so well with my current dog being present and most likely distracting him. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

    • @SomeLikeItHomegrown
      @SomeLikeItHomegrown  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chris Serrano We had a hearing dog when we got Coco, then we added Rocket (also Deaf), then a few years later we added Dottie, 2 years ago Charlie our hearing dog passed away...our dogs really missed having a hearing friend around. Mostly they missed the confidence he had he really took the role of lead. So 4 months ago we got PeeWee another hearing dog - puppy. So far they are all getting along great. :) The dogs are not biased about hearing/deaf...either they like their personality or not. If the dogs get along I don't see why it would be a problem :)

      +staylyn77 that's a bummer, mine all like car rides, must be an individual personality thing. We drove with ours up and down the west coast a couple times, and CA to OK a couple times. They are not only dogs though, if I leave any of them anywhere as a solo dog they cry/scream.

    My dog isn't deaf, but I don't like to actually talk to it, especially in public places (weird facet of social anxiety), I have been working heavily on geastures and this video really helped to elaborate on that!

  • @SomeLikeItHomegrown

    It could have had deaf owners for sure :) or maybe savvy owners ... most dogs respond to signs better than voice commands since they rely so heavily on body language.
