THANK YOU Christina! I am a Canine Obedience Instructor and have really been helped by your video here! I recently was approached by a woman who recently adopted a young Labrador retriever mix. She quickly realized the dog was not responding to her voice or any other sounds and had the suspicion that the dog was deaf. She took her in to see a vet and the dog was diagnosed with hearing impairment. The vet informed her that the dog would likely lose all hearing. She also was seeking training for the pup but had been turned down by every trainer in the area we live because the dog is hearing impaired.
When her and I met, we got into conversation about her pup and she explained to me that she wanted training but couldn't find anyone willing to take her on as a client. I work at Petco as a trainer and told her I would be delighted to train for her. She couldn't understand why everyone else was turning her down. The only logical conclusion I could come to was that it had to be because the dog was hearing impaired/deaf. I have never trained for a dog with this condition but I imagine it takes more patience and understanding as well as the use of signals instead of verbal commands.
I explained to her that from day one, I have always been a huge advocate for the use of hand signals as well as body language when communicating with dogs. Simply put, canines do not understand human verbal language. The associate a sound (verbal language) with a behavior. But, they never learn to speak human language. So much of "dog training" is about assimilating them into "our" world. I rather enjoy us, as humans, learning to navigate their world. I don't train dogs. I train humans to understand dogs. Meet them halfway and build a bond with their animal companions. I believe in this mission. While I have never trained a dog with hearing impairment, I am excited to engage and believe I can be successful! With your video, I have a better understanding of appropriate hang signals. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this well informed demonstration!

I adopted an almost eight year old Shar Pei from a local shelter. I quickly noticed and then later have it confirmed by a Vet that he is deaf. He was so well trained by his previous human that he is very easy to take care of. Thanks for the video on signing to him, it is very helpful. I don't even consider his hearing loss a deficit, He's a great dog.

Can I ask how you get them to come to you? I try to use the hand signal but my dog doesn’t know what I mean

Wow, what great lessons, thank you! My fur baby became deaf over time, but looking back, I think she always had ear/hearing issues, I just wasn’t aware or able to see them, now with 20/20 hindsight, they seem pretty clear. Thankfully, when I did obedience training with my previous dog, I was taught the importance of hand signals alongside verbal commands, so it’s been easy to teach my little deafy new commands….I think I love her even more because of her deafness💕💕💕💕🇦🇺

i wish we knew my dog was deaf sooner because she picked up some silly signs for stuff. We got her under the idea she was hearing and she was so hyper and aware of us we thought she could hear but slowly figured it out. walk is moving our arms like we are fake running. good girl is jazz hands but so is "come here" depending on if she is close or far. we tried to separate those two commands but she just ignores the other commands by closing her eyes or looking away. this video is very helpful for more communication ideas with her though!!

This is excellent! There is a dog at the house we're staying at, just 1 year old, and I couldn't help myself but to run a couple tests on her, and I think she does have a hearing problem (rather than listening / obedience problem). I have spent a couple days with her when other people are gone, and started training her more visually and she seems quite intrigued that I'm figuring it out. She seems way more focused, has more eye contact with me, and gave me the sweetest snuggle. I'm looking forward to learning more.

Thank you for this. We have a 3 year old boxer who may or may not get her hearing back after an accident she had. It’s been a week and still no hearing so I’m now looking into new training. She knows a few signals but mostly was verbally trained. So we are pretty much starting all over

This would be good training for all dogs. It is quiet and gentle. If a dog started to lose its hearing the transition would be easier if it knew the signs already.

Dogs are far more intelligent than humans give them credit for, still have yet to learn so much about them. I’ve seen the dogs who have learned to use the buttons to communicate better.

I have a specific question. I used to train & show Springer Spaniels long ago & took all of my dogs through AKC CDX and a couple to UD, so I’m familiar with training, but not the 2 month old Labrador I just discovered today is deaf.
So, the question. I want to start with sit, and use a downward flat palm for the visual cue, but in training to sit I need to roll/push her butt to the ground while also holding her collar. That’s two hands occupied. How do I accomplish the command/response to sit for a deaf puppy? Being short, direct & succinct is great, as I do understand dogs & training, but non-hearing is another world for me! Thanks!

My deaf boy has this issue sometimes I distract his nose with treats to re focus on me. A good “watch me” is especially important. It sounds simple but I know the struggle 😅 I hope this helps!

WITH MALICE TOWARDS ONE AND ALL... |
    KHUSHWANT SINGH
    Watchdogs
A SARDARJI acquired two highly pedigreed dogs. He was proud of them and took them out to the park when he took his evening stroll. One day another walker accosted him and asked: "Sardarji, your dogs are beautiful: what have you named them?" Sardarji pointed them out in turns and replied: "This one is Titan, this one Omega". Strange named for dogs: remarked the other; "Why have you named them after brand names of watches?"
"Because they are my watchdogs," replied the Sardarji.
