Thanks for this! I have a 8wk old pup that my older dog just attacked after fair warning near his food...he is healed and good, but that made me realize this issue, he didnt hear any warning growls... He's a foster, but a pitty, so thank god the local recuse group here in Belize got him from the vendor, because I dont want to think what would happen to a pitty that cant hear threats. I will follow your videos and figure out how to give him his best life, thank you so much!
I absolutely love the ping pong ball to diffuse the light--such a great idea. I haven't found the right light to train my deaf cat because they are all to similar to a laser, so this is so helpful. Thanks!

I had a Golden that went deaf in old age. At first we thought she was going senile or getting stubborn, but when we figured out she couldn't hear, it was amazing how she had picked up hand gestures (that we didn't realize we were giving along with tricks) that she had learned on her own,
We have an 11 year old lab. We thought he was going deaf. ... nope. He is just tired of listening to us lol
Great video. We have a 13wk old deaf english staffy. A very quick learner. I have often used hands signals when training dogs but the fact that he is deaf just makes me work a little harder at coming up with a range of signals. Looking forward to more of your clips.

Just found out our 6m old English bulldog is either deaf or hard of hearing. We noticed she doesn’t react to sound like our other dogs. She doesn’t even react to their barking. This will be so helpful getting her trained ❤

Me and my wife raised a deaf boxer and he was pretty easy to train after he passed we had tossed the idea around of adopting another deaf dog. We recently just adopted a deaf Jack Russell and are beginning her training. Like the tips you have to share look forward to adding these to our training. Thank you

Very creative with a clicker
I'm thinking of adopting a deaf dog and have been doing tons of research. I think I'm going to try this before I introduce a vibrating collar. I'm so glad I found this because this seems like a more gentle way to start
I love the idea with the flashlight marker and probably will build one myself. I adopted a deaf dog a few days ago and while I'm pretty good with training hearing dogs now I'm sucking in all the infos on deaf dogs. Your video helped a lot
I'm glad you found it useful! I would suggest teaching a marker with your hand in addition to the flashlight. I just had a former client tell me the flashlight was harder to see outside in the daylight. Good luck!

@@razendar Good luck! Just to be clear, I'm not saying to use them at the same time but to teach them both so you can use one or the other, depending on the situation.

I don't understand why some owners will be put off by a dog being deaf. They are just as loving and affectionate. Hoping to adopt a deaf Spaniel cross called Quincey, really hope I get chosen to adopt him. 🐶
I saw a puppy and wanted him. I noticed he was deaf. Told to return him, I said, No. I was determined to find ways to communicate with him!
I just realized that my dog is deaf, there’s no way I’m getting rid of her, we love her dearly, she’s only seven months old, I’m biggest concern is learning to communicate with her, I’m looking at videos so I can learn, who ever has a dog and they find out they’re deaf, don’t get rid of them , it’s not their fault, love them to death ❤

i have a deaf dog and he was really bad at first but then i did some training and he was better. i recently moved a few weeks ago and now he just constantly eats everything (my shoes, my bra, wires, anything on the ground). none of the training that worked before is working now, i even got him more toys to play with and chew instead of my stuff and nothing is working. me and my aussie need help :(
We just adopted a deaf border collie... But we didn't know she was deaf when we got her. I figured she was spunky and strong willed... But it turns out she can't hear us, even if she would ignore us if she did... I am so lost on how to get started ... She won't focus on us at all ... Are the treats we're trying to use not high value enough? I don't want to give her back... But at this rate my roommate has nearly give up

My dog just went deaf and I was thyinkung maybe a lazer pointer at the ground would be better (daytime/ when not looking at you already)
Hmmmm.... Interesting thought.... That would need to be done very strategically and may end up being harder. I think there might be too many "rules" to using one as they take extra caution for various reasons. I do like how the button works on them, but I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the risks for me.
Practicality-wise, one big concern is helping your dog make the behavior-marker connection without looking at you. If we're pointing it at the ground, we may end up struggling with that important message.

My 13 year old doxie just became deaf from old age. Vet verified. Can I teach an old deaf dog new tricks or how to understand? Help. Vet is no help. We've brought him to 3. Every vet just says he's old and now deaf. How do I help him? In the morning when he's sleeping he gets startled. I want to make his life easier for his time left here in earth. Can I be trained to help him?

We just adopted a one year old Australian Heeler. It turns out she is deaf. She has been abused and is so malnourished. I Hope you had good luck with training. My journey is just starting :/
@@sunshyne850 I'm wishing you all the best with your new pup. I've found that my pup is so focused on any kind of movement and so food motivated that he picks up things quickly. He also chases squirrels, birds, and shadows, though.

She's very playful and I have two small old grouchy dogs who do not want to play at all and I'm afraid they are going to get hurt. It breaks my heart, but she also needs a fenced yard because she wants to chase cars.
i want to ask... i have 3 months old dogo argentino totally deaf. i started to train with flash and treat but it seems so distracted and also me and my wife doing this together. but im not sure if it's proper age to train. can u help me?
Puppies that age are REALLY distractable and can only stay focused for a few minutes at a time typically. Maybe limit your sessions to 5 min each and spread them out over the course of the day. Just end each one while the puppy is still engaged.

I want to buy a vibration collar for her to start training her to recall, but while i saw too many reviews out there i cannot decide which one to get. Do you have any recommendations? I just adopted a deaf Westie, 5 months old. I have been able to train her to come inside through a doggy door, but she just isn't picking up on how to go out through the same door. Any suggestions?
Hi, Steven! I'm going to guess you've already trying luring her through it. Is there a way to remove the door entirely for you to practice? If not, maybe you can prop it open and play a few "in and out games." What methods have you tried so far?
@@attapuptraining I would prop the flap open and put a treat just outside the door. When she went out, I gently lowered the flap onto her back. I would put the treat out further (just an inch or two) with every attempt. She would eventually go through but not unless I was holding the flap. Thanks to our cat, Luna chased her right out the doggy door. Ever since, she thinks she a hot shot and is going through all by herself. I guess I wasn't using the right motivation! LOL

Awww, I would just start out marking and treating the times when she's quiet. Also, figure out what works best as a distraction or redirection technique for her. You can always email info@attapuptraining.com. (Don't hesitate to email more than once. I get a lot of emails.)
I'm having a tough time teaching my deaf boxer puppy hand signals :( this is my first deaf pet, so I'm learning as I go, but if ANYONE has any advice or suggestions, please feel free to comment! Is there something else I could use besides a light? I'm kind of worried about using it, cause I've heard horror stories of dogs going crazy when they see a light 😬
Hi, Melissa! If you skip to around 3:42, there's a hand flash instead of a light. Stevie, the dog in the video, was adopted. His mom ended up using a hand flash or a thumbs up. I don't think she uses the light at all anymore :) Let me know if I can be of any other assistance, and good luck!
