  • Good news for those who don't want to spend more money on a higher standard paint, paper or brushes. It's important what you choose, but it does not mean that good art could only be created by expensive material.

    There is a term I have heard a few times working in design studios and it's "Studio Check": You finish some artwork, you print it and hand it to a colleague. You'd be surprised how many times another person find in seconds something wrong that you have in front of you for hours. It happens to everybody.

    Wonderful! The [bigger] older wiser trees on the left have learned to lean to the left [past the house] to catch the final rays of the smouldering sun. ☀️

    I believe that if the painting speaks more on the subject by cheating with reality, it is perfect. I did this in my last Tempera. I dared to move buildings in my city. ;)!
    Your watercolors are beautiful, Titus. The light in this latest oil is simply magical.

    I missed the video with the backlight, but I stopped this one and went back and also read the comments. I wouldn't have been so bold as to criticize your decision in public, but I do believe that strong shadows not aligned with the light source are very different from impractical shutters (which may have been folding panels anyway). I was always a slave to my reference. That's why I'm so excited about being coached to be creative in music so late in life. I'm glad you finally admitted that you only use the best materials. My experience is that transparent painting is much too unforgiving for cheap paper, paint and brushes. Your honesty is a great gift to aspiring artists. It's more than I got from most instructors at art college.

    Your thoughts and ideas are INVALUABLE...I watch your videos every single morning..start to finish. I see that you don't work in numerical order from start to finish because you group your work as plan for the day...I LOVE IT...I don't mind searching around your post to find how you started a painting so that I can follow the finishing of that painting because it just leads me to more Golden nuggets! Again I admire your thinking and level of skill!

    Колкото до това, че нямаш навикът да отговаряш на коментари(поне не на всички), първоначално мислех да не ти пиша повече, защото се чувствах сякаш говоря на стената(доста фрустиращо). Аз съм емоционална, екстровертна , спонтанна. Което едва ли импонира на вглъбен и съзерцателен типаж като твоя (доколкото мога да те усетя само от видеата и подкаста ти). Нямам обратна връзка, за да разбера това. Но като твой запален фен ще кажа, че твоите клиенти ще се влюбят в дома и градината си като видят твоята картина. Вече имах случай да разсъждавам по въпроса за светлината. Понеже създаването на една картина е дълъг процес, дори когато рисуваш от натура, как по-точно избираш кой момент да отразиш в творбата си така,че да е най-атрактивно или да отговаря на твоето внушение,което отправяш като автор. Винаги има отношение предполагам. Относно другите аспекти, които сподели, напълно споделям твоето мнение. Развитието на личността на твореца е неминуемо, особено ако се е посветил на изкуството. Мисля, че ти си на прав път и смятам за чест, че живея в твоята епоха. Звучи високопарно, но виждам, че красотата е в състояние да спаси света.💗🧙‍♀️

    I've recently switched to 100% cotton paper from the wood pulp "student grade" paper. More than anything I've tried in watercolor, I've found this allows me to create what my mind's eye sees. It would be nice to have a large collection of Daniel Smith paints and Escoda brushes if I had the money! But as I learn more I realize that for what I want to create I just need the right paper. That's been my recent experience about finding quality that influences outcome, and it helps me feel more empowered to create!

      There are many many beautiful paints around the world. Even though that brand is available here there are really just as lovely ones in other areas. I mix different brands. Sometimes people have older palettes that are just fine but stored. My first one was from the early 50s. You will have the best base of mixing practice because nobody uses 200 colors, just the basics and the rest is a commercial.😊

    • @cammatthewhayes
      @cammatthewhayes ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ninner196I agree! I’ve mostly limited my palette to six primaries, a tint, burnt sienna, umber and white gouache. Mixing my own colors has really helped me learn a lot about color theory quite quickly.

    • @ninner196
      @ninner196 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cammatthewhayes the Zorn palette was used by many artists including Norman Rockwell and might be intriguing as he wasn’t the only one he revived what was popular in the later 17 - 1800s usually to light up the face. It is a lovely way to learn that with just four colors and values we can visually make others believe that what they are seeing is complete. Happy painting!

    The house portrait is stunning. I loved it last week and even more this week. Like I said last week you really know that morning/evening light and so it so well. You turned, what felt to you bland (during your en Plein-air visit), to something dynamic in your studio portrait. Honestly the Plein-air portrait was lovely, but this one is magic.

    Quality is a result of quantity. You need to try everything, regardless of cost, to discover what is right for your process. It is the same with the process of creating art. You don't get good by aiming to paint 4 high quality works a year, you get good by painting 100 poor quality paintings a year.

    • @ninner196
      @ninner196 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly can be a dilemma. You pulled out my favorite artist Johannes Vermeer. I think he enjoyed messing a bit with our minds and he certainly isn’t the only one. I like the sun higher as you did it illuminating the whole picturesque scene. It isn’t just a house, it is a beautiful home as they hopefully see it in their hearts. The shadows play well and it looks great. Personally I do not feel that all has to follow a set of rules or traditionalism. For those who do then that is fine also for them, I am capable but our work reflects our personality, some of us enjoy seeing what others spot in our work that was intended to make them wonder or laugh. It adds to the joy of our work and makes it lively and fun. Those who might jump on an inconsistency might want to consider that an artist probably knows and kindly hinting is appreciated. I knew that you would work it out. Maybe I will try a different one again on purpose and be completely wrong conveying confusion who knows, I did think about picking up a tube of Turner yellow 😂 That was a quick cleanup by the way, the music must have been good. I would have been running!😊

    I think in Vermeers painting the shutters were foldable, but he chose not to paint the joint, to simplify. You can even see a darker crack right in the middle of each shutter. So maybe he was just copying.

  • @SpareTombs

    I think the over large shutters being man made can be as crazy as the artist decides, but the shadows of those shutters are nature - and nature never lies.

    Love your vids Titus, the slow tempo is soothing and despite that I dont work in watercolours, there's a lot in here to learn from. Albeit directly technique to mindset. Lovely. Funny btw, that you paint a lot in some detail but decide to leave the 'spatborden' of the bike out of the picture. Maybe that gives too much detail and thus pulls the eye too much?

    Hi! Another great video. I'm curious if you have a "process" you like to stick to when painting, especially for work that you are doing for commission? I do quite a few house commissions as well in watercolor but I am not a full time artist. I work them in around my job. I don't really have a process other than I usually like to start with skies but I find when I sit down without a plan, it gives me freedom to "let the painting develop" rather than sitting down with a set process for how I do everything that I repeat. I'm curious if that is the same way for you? I tried to stick to a process early on and found I didn't really enjoy it as I felt "constrained".

    I love all your paintings and especially watercolor paintings which are so difficult for me, I guess in this one I don't see the shadow of the house. I guess the shadow of the house should be longer if the bushes in front of the house are that long. The small bushes should be in the shadow of the house???

    Does accuracy matter for creativity?

    • @lshwadchuck5643
      @lshwadchuck5643 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the way I read the title, too. I've been watching old interviews with Alice Neel. Inaccuracy is her mode of creativity. She limited her time on large canvases to the 3-5 hours her subjects sat for her, so with long brushes at arm's length her sketch was final and away she went with colour. The results were so emotive, so expressive! I always painted accurately, but not tightly. Accurate proportions are one thing, tight detail is another.
