  • I think we can reach a certain "tipping point moment" in every creating process. After all your input, experimenting and labour there comes a moment where you can tune in to the creation and look or listen carefully while it's telling you how to finish the work. For me this is a special moment and I'm sure there are more artists out there who know what I'm talking about.
You can listen these videos and explore more in my weekly updated podcast "Art in the making":

The scary part is not when the painting is a mess and you're trying to fix it, but when it's going well, but you want to take it a step further which you know will either make it much more interesting or completely ruin what was going well. : )

when it’s going well you’re not even present . it just happens. when it’s not working is when you’re in the room

I did that too and then got so frustrated (because it's a fairly large piece on a rolled piece of old canvas that I've nailed to the wall) and took a scrub sponge & went nuts rubbing everything off, but... what some of the good remnants of what was under it from when it was good was still there.
It gave me the opportunity to approach it from a much more minimalistic, worn & distressed look.
Of course then I got the bright idea of making the background a bronze gold like an ancient religious painting & now that's too much!:))
A complete study on overworking is in order for me!
      Good luck with your painting.
I try to remember the words; "less is more" but it doesn't always work!@@andreaslightangels

Ooh, the mess became so very beautiful! Really proving that mess is needed before it can become art. It's sometimes so unsettling just before the turning point and you might want to quit, not yet seeing the end of it. I once tried a selfportrait in oil, i was working on the underpainting and my then teenaged daughter walked in and asked if a was painting a witch..made a photo of it and made a completely different painting on top of it. Last week i saw the photo again and saw it was a very promising portrait, it was just in the messy stage and i should have trusted the proces. I think thats the reason i wan't to be alone when painting, to avoid comments, to keep looking through the mess without selfdoubt.
Last weekend i joined a group of painters for painting a local celebrity, that was difficult. I made a very small sketch, had people looking over my shoulder. But it was a chance for me to paint a real life sitting person and that made me join the circus. And i just withdrew in my sketching and observing and time was flying, made some photo's in the end and tonight i will make a new mess in order to produce a liking painting. And when it wins, am letting it go gracefully..😉
Have a lovely weekend, Sinterklaas is in town, hope you and your family are enjoying the festive feeling.
The fanfares you painted, you can hear them play!

Good morning, Titus! I've just seen your video from 2021 02 03 (although you were speaking dutch there I read the english subtitles) and I like the way you spoke about "the tipping moment" .I see this is a recurring thought for you. I just wanted to tell that i understoood so well what you mean, even if you're talking about an almost magic sensation, difficult to put into words. I also want to thank you so much for for letting us to have a look over you shoulder, have this sort of intimate conversation about topics as interesting as creativity or discipline, and sharing the painting time with you. I also find your podcast very interesting, it's like an "impressionist painting to listen to". Thank you very much.
(Last week I attended in Verona a lecture by Jan Brokken and everything sounded so familiar to me, his accent while speaking english and the subject too, as he told us his experience alone with a Rothko in a closed museum at night) Ciao!

Oh, yes! The tipping point is very real. It’s easy to give up right before it happens…then the painting calls to me and tells me what it needs…as long as I’m patient enough to listen and humble enough to receive the information and not rush it. Thanks for pointing it out in your video.

I so enjoy your videos. I grew up in Texas, and have a long and lasting love of Dutch paintings. About shipping your water colors. You might try clear acrylic to act as a shield to protect the surface. Acrylic is just about bullet proof.
The quiet and contemplative quality of your programs are refreshing. You have discovered a life for yourself that should meet the needs of most people. My life is quiet too. I discover interesting subjects and paint them in oils in my tiny studio. Glad your videos are around.

I started again with watercolor painting, after 100 years;) and it feels like coming home. Also I have been working with nature structures since many years (studied Biology) (evavoile) and my process with these subjects is given inspiration through your videos too. Once again: thank you. Oooh… I think I just realized something… all the time when I was trying to learn watercolor.. when I got halfway thru and I’d be thinking it’s awful it will never turn out.. I never realized that the line of communication had changed and you need to start listening now… I never saw that. Instead I sat there struggling, over and over, frustrated, trying to force my way onto it.. instead of letting it tell me. Thanks for pointing that out ❤

For me, everything is already predestined, so this also applies to a painting I am working on. What the painting eventually becomes is not in my hands. This gives me enormous freedom. I do what my heart tells me to do and therefore do not have to feel anxious about the final result.

Your painting "The Marching Band" is a masterpiece like the other one that you painted today for the exhibition. As I see they differ from those you paint for commision when you have to fulfill the client's expectations. I think you should paint more for yourself when you don't have to work together with the client, just as with these paintings.

My world described as a parent of 3. Using the only skills I had at the time. Loving, nurturing. But chaos. I used to see them as a mess, a bitter single parent, a recovering addict, an incarcerated mentally ill son. Chaos. For so long. Now the tipping point. I listen. I don't expect much. I listen to hear who they are, not my expectations of who they should have been. Parenting as art. Hell if I know. But now, I find solace in painting and this video. You. A gift.

    Bravo!!! Bravo!!! Bravo!!!
I love you!!! You're the Artist I dreamed of one day being.
Let me be 100% with You about this Video, the Art, Artist and the Methodology.
Please listen, as I turn back many pages of my sketchbooks to my first day at the San Francisco Art Institute.
I was so nervously excited, the butterflies in my tummy fluttered round to the Circus sound and I felt sick.
I sat alone in a bathroom stall and above the toilet paper roll dispenser, it was written on the wall...
" San Francisco Art Institute Diploma's~ Please Take One"
It was then that I realized that for years that I had dressed in black jumped the chain link rope in the darkest corner of the stairs cloaked in shadows, after midnight , I would covertly sneak my way up to the Campus above the courtyard cafe outdoor classroom platform and look out over North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf as the lights over Alcatraz shined through the fog, dreaming of one day....
I awake to the sound of a fog horn I walk down halls as the smell of Turpentine and Oil Paint perspiring from the walls drips down and falls like rain.
The art by students is openly displayed in the courtyard outdoor gallery and pond.
I gaze under pale light to take in some of the works of art.
As I try to make out what I see, it looks like an abstract color field small triangular shaped piece, is it beautiful??? Well it is on the wall it deserves critique.
Finally enough light to see that it's a fat slice of pizza someone smashed with such unbelievable violent force against the white painted brick the toppings perfectly cast off and dripped as if it were the aftermath of a horrific crime scene, the cheese cooled and became the glue that held it in place.
I seen too much and left just before day break.
Now that I was Student it came to light that it was an open 24 Hour access Campus anyone could just walk right in.
Forgive me, I digress. From what I've seen and what I have learned and that which I will take away from this video, which has made me laugh and cry.
The laughter is not at you but at myself for having dreams of being an artist like the one that I see in you.
To see you paint was such a moving thing to see, to hear your heart and to not give up and take a mess and make a work of art is tragically beautiful in a world that is beautifully tragic, when my tipping point has been my boiling point.
From my pallet and scraped off paint looking more like art than what I make, which sometimes is costly wasted materials layered in time of self conscious strokes of muddy paint fall asleep a mess left in its wake.
The takeaway is such a great gift you have given to another man of kindred spirits the artist path is sung by the muse of an epic Poem of twists and turns the Artist makes mistakes and from this journey the Artist learns.
The echoed ring in my head, Don't give up, even when the streets have no trees as long as the Sun will rise there will be light and light is life and life is art.
You have re- inspired that spirit in me, the dream to be an artist like you, to open my eyes and look out of my windows and into my soul and seek the light.
I am grateful for what you've shared for me it means a lot.
Sir you are not an Artist You are a Work of Art!!!
    Sincerely,
    Randy Chavez
    Happy Holidays !!!

Thank you for making this video. I relate to your words about when you first are using your knowledge to get the subject down so to speak, but at a certain point you are relating to the creation itself as an evolving alive Art work that takes care of it's self...through you in a way. That is how I feel a painting that succeeds. I have to let it become as it is meant to be at a certain point. That is when I am feeling, not only seeing, but both intuitively.

Your videos are just getting better and better. I enjoy very much to hear your reasonings and thought about the painting process. We all go through these thoughts, perhaps without even knowing it. Creativity and inspiration are two very powerful tools and how they arise or come about is a lovely "mystery". Using new methods to achieve a painting goal is a very healthy thing. Painting should never be a "routine". As you say - then it becomes boring. There are multiple ways to reach a creative goal. Thanks for your enlightening videos.

You're hitting home runs lately Titus! The main message here is another one that went 'out of the park': start with intent, an idea, a reference and then look at what the painting can become. That's when the painting starts talking to you... In other words: LISTEN to the paint. Work/ do something and then, look and listen. Be open to what the paint is telling you, what it needs. I think my best piece to date was created this way. But this was before I ever heard about this and it happened by accident.
The last year or two, I feel like I first have to invest in my skills, get better first, before I start listening...
And also since then, I've read up and looked at lots of theory. Stuff about composition, colour theory, edges, etc. Great to know but now I need to learn to quiet down all that theoretical 'chatter' and look/ listen to what I think a painting needs.
It's hard to turn off the expectations of others that I imagine and then project onto my paintings (jeez that would have sounded super artsy fartsy 5 years ago but it's so true for me now). I find it hard to listen, to let the paint speak, to not let 'theory' dictate what should be done. And I find it hard to dare to step away from my reference... I'm so tied to my reference.
Food for thought and so, so, so much to practice to be done... urrrgh. My rant may sound like a complaint but its not. It's actually a massive thank you! Bedankt man!

Very lovely video again. How true it is about how a painting starts to direct the artist after a time of putting in technique, detail and I have noticed that sometimes it can be early on in the process and other times it seems like an eternity, but not really, and then it happens. I often had wondered if others had experienced that also. I really am fond of your layering and remembered when you had started the painting with the dark dark shadows and I saw the bluish layer , I really like the combination and how you carried the orange/ blue through and brightening it up. Once again it was another beautiful week. We are enjoying your book. My mom read it also. She is a very capable artist with paint but enjoys other artistic expression. Your fanfare painting will be enjoyed for many years. By the way I have really gotten into Qor’s transparent wc, wow their reds and a non blinding “hooker’s green” for convenience. Hi Titus, I have found my paintings sitting half-finished for weeks on end just waiting for me to come back. Often I feel that the painting didn't turn out well somewhere in the middle of making it and get discouraged. As always, you bring deep insights into my own art journey. Perhaps it's at this tipping point that I need to start listening to the painting rather than trying to force it to be what I had originally envisioned. Of course, once I get the courage to pick it back up and finish it, I feel as though my worries were trivial and the painting doesn't end up as the mess that I thought it would become. Thanks for bringing language to what I felt was inexplicable. -Steven

Sometimes I put a half finished painting away if I’m disappointed with its progress. When I get it out days, weeks or months later, I can often see where I want to go with it clearly, probably because I’ve forgotten what my original intention was!

Hi Steven, thanks for your comment. I think I know what you say. When a painting is put away in a certain phase, it falls asleep. In a deep sleep and we feel fear when we would like to “stir” in the paint again to awake it. And doubt brings all those thoughts and new doubts. For me the only way is to do something. Don’t blame yourself if anything will go wrong, things will go wrong and things will go well. The more you do the better you know what to do at what moment

Thank you. The tree is still there, don’t worry!! The trees along the water are gone, two years ago. Now they’re planting the new ones.
Good luck with the portrait painting !

I adore the dynamic rythme in the maeching band series. It is really an awesome series and I do hope you will dive into the well of unknown like you did in tbis case, but more often. It was awesome to watch tbese come to life. Maybe someday I will have the money to buy an original from you, ut for now seeing them online will have to do.

Essa é a linguagem pictórica de que a arte necessita. Um trabalho esmerado e surpreendente.

Titus, instead of Art Glass consider Optium Museum Acrylic….(at least that’s the name of it in the US)….light weight and makes shipping a framed piece trouble free without the concern of breaking glass. Love your videos!

Losing mature trees always saddens me... people think they are just objects until their healing presence is removed.

Hi , greatings form India, great painting as always. Well for the shipping piece, did you go for the fibre sheet in place of glass. That would be lighter and safe too.

I know this is an odd comment but i couldn't help notice you bring your hands up to your eyes several times. As an artist I find eye strain and over use to be an issue for me. Its possibly the same for you?

It became a “mess” because you started to PUT DETAILS IN A DARK AREA. This is a reflection of your presence signature: a fine sensibility mixed with vanity and selfimportant vibe stench (this is the “too many details in the shadow” part, the artificial complication coming from all the “me me me” details it always wants to “explain” or impose. Let go of the self and your Grace will shine.
