I feel like a lot of people in America grew up with the impression that motorsports are boring because all we have is NASCAR, and NASCAR sucks. But this is real racing right here.
Bare in mind the Sierra was first designed in 1982! The body shell itself never changed - although rouse and johnson both broke the rules by cutting away the floor pan and welding it back in an inch or so in the shell. The engine was a 2.0 cast iron block (200 and 205 blocks) based on the pinto engine first released in the RS2000 MK2 escort. The Cosworth were commisioned in 83 to product a race engine with most of the R&D work done in an "xr4" in the 85 BTCC season. The RS500 version had a bigger turbo (again rouse and johnson cheating there (long story) and 8 injectors. So here was your road car designed in 82, with a performance version in 86 (RS Cosworth) and the RS500 in 87. In race trim in the early days they would put out about 320hp, but as time got on the HP grew and grew with trick heads, higher boost, better internals etc - but still in a chassis originally designed in 1982. FFWD to 1992. Who got pole? DJ. OK 91 say a syline on pole but a sierra got pole 87,88,89,90,92. By now the chassis was well out dated. Compare the GTR with the cossie entering the chase. The GTR composed. The cossie always looked like it was on the point of a massive accident. Compare that to the R32 that was designed and built in 88. I think they used the RB20 engine although I'm not sure. 4 wheel drive too. Massive advantage. If the R32 was only allowed to run in RWD things may have been different but we will never know. The cossie for me will always be king. Ford ruined everything with the escort cosworth using the Saphire Cosworth floorpan and running gear with a mk5 shell - but thats another subject entirely. I owned a R32 in 2004 and a 3 door cossie in 2005. The R32 always felt planted on the road, the cossie was a handful on unfamiliar roads, and I'd fucking shit myself if I took it out in the wet. I sold that and bought a pulsar GTR - full stripped out, two seats, cage, 400bhp. To date the best car I've ever owned - although out of them em them cossie always made me smile. PEople arguing over things, get over it. Its evolution. The cossie had to conceed to newer technology. Same reason the MK2 escort isnt in the wrc! What I'm not excited about is the new 4x4 Focus. It might have an RS Badge, but its no Cosworth.
Honestly, it makes me glad that "car brand xenophobia" isn't just isolated to the US. Seems like you Aussies have that issue too according to these comments.

the sierra is a far more successfull race car when taking into account its racing heritage. It won the dtm championship in germany against the 190 cosworth and e30 and it also won a bunch of rallies
In nz, advertizing on sundays was banned so one year we got to hear them whilst aussie ads were on. It was classic banter. F this f that laughter slurred speach. They were obviously taking advantage of sponsor hospitality. Then straight back to mr interesting when back on air. So funny
They were also restricted in rear tyre size. I read a quote from DJ years ago that if you weren't careful exiting 2nd gear corners, they wheel spin all the way through 3rd and 4th gears on the straight.
Nick Mendez because the GTR got sandbagged with a boost pop off valve and skinner tires, if the GTR ran in the 1991 spec for the 92 season the GTR would have crushed the ford
Phantasy Boy on the straights yes because in the 1992 season the GTR got very heavily penalised with a boost restriction from the turbos more weight add to the car and skinnier tires. What I’m saying is that if the GTR had been run in the same spec as it did in 1991 the ford would’ve had no chance anywhere, but none of that matters because the GTR still kicked the fords arse anyway in 1992 😜

Ahh, Godzilla back in the day. One of them many reasons why these sportscars and its bloodline are legendary. It’s number of championships, consecutive official wins, lap time records, 1/4 awd records, 1 mile, you name it. It’s basically the most successful Japanese sportscar line date. Other cars can just dream about those achievements. And what made the GT-R BNR32 very popular thus earned the name “Godzilla”? Because it was handicapped, banned, and changed grp A rule books. It was very controversial, and simply too dominating back in the early 90s.

Even got to to drive around the track the next morning, albeit in the opposite direction and at a crawl (because it's a one-way public road and the cops were pointing radar guns at all the wanna be Peter Brocks :-P) Only thing that could've made it a better day was if Holden had won.
One thing I forgot to mention is the huge elevation difference of 175 metres between top & bottom. Many people don't realise because it's hard to pick-up from video. It's a long steep climb and a fast descent...every lap.

Two of the greatest homologation cars in history. I would love to add an R32 to my collection someday, the cosworth may be the more outrageous looker and better balanced drivers car, but the YB certainly can't touch the way that RB26 sounds.

Absolute beauties, I can only hope that more of these types of cars are preserved and not banned outright in the near future. The all electric push is depressing though perhaps a necessity, there's the controversy about the energy used in producing them and exporting/transporting them for sale. Tighter emissions laws for MOT I can see the sense in, versus outright bans.

Gran turismo 2 REAL LiFE¡
Bare in mind the Sierra was first designed in 1982!
It might have an RS Badge, but its no Cosworth.
triptechable Cool story
Gtr was just that much better
+Zac Youngson it was. however in 1992 the sapphire cosworth was available in 4x4 form and would've made things even closer in the wet.

Amazing series. Modern touring/DTM cars pail in comparison!
You can hear every single other car reving hard, but not the gtr, what a restrected engine sounds.
Wow I forgot how fast those Sierras were.
potaka79 check out Dick Johnson hitting scramble boost at 1:37 - he's really trying to get past the GTR.
They were also restricted in rear tyre size. I read a quote from DJ years ago that if you weren't careful exiting 2nd gear corners, they wheel spin all the way through 3rd and 4th gears on the straight.

The Sierra was way passed it's prime by 1992. Amazing it was still hanging on by that point.
Nearly 10 years after the initial developments of the cars. And yet it could still leave the GTR behind on the straights.
Nick Mendez because the GTR got sandbagged with a boost pop off valve and skinner tires, if the GTR ran in the 1991 spec for the 92 season the GTR would have crushed the ford
@@klayshotter Don't talk rubbish if that was in dry condition the Sierra would leave the Nissan in the dust
Phantasy Boy on the straights yes because in the 1992 season the GTR got very heavily penalised with a boost restriction from the turbos more weight add to the car and skinnier tires. What I’m saying is that if the GTR had been run in the same spec as it did in 1991 the ford would’ve had no chance anywhere, but none of that matters because the GTR still kicked the fords arse anyway in 1992 😜
@@klayshotter Rubbish the Sierra was penalized too with boost reduction power reduction way back from 1988 89 No car could keep up that's why you only saw Sierras in a row. Not on this Bathurst it didn't Dick won this but the stewards thought to rob him of his victory as Ford Sierra was robbed in 1987
Ahh, Godzilla back in the day.

The golden age of racing.
one of the best tracks in the world full stop.
I went to this race. I was about 21 and we watched at the top of the mountain, with plenty of beer to keep us hydrated all day. It was one of the best experiences I've had.

I am fortunate to own a 3dr Cosworth in the states and I swear I could park it next to anything and it would steal the show, never have I owned or even ridden in a car that breaks necks like it, I can't go a mile without a thumbs up, a wave, or someone cutting up traffic to try to catch up with me. I would love to add an R32 to my collection someday, the cosworth may be the more outrageous looker and better balanced drivers car, but the YB certainly can't touch the way that RB26 sounds.
Whats your collection buddy? Only your amazing Sierra?

Absolute beauties, I can only hope that more of these types of cars are preserved and not banned outright in the near future. The all electric push is depressing though perhaps a necessity, there's the controversy about the energy used in producing them and exporting/transporting them for sale. Tighter emissions laws for MOT I can see the sense in, versus outright bans.
It was only a few years later, i stopped watching these races- around the EL Flacon period.
I miss the various cars that raced back then- everything from a Corlla to a GTR

Did the water pump not fail ?
So it was Johnson's mechanics who where wiping the floor or mopping it
1988 Tourist Trophy wasn't it?
Put his car on pole ahead of Rouse and the Eggenberger Sierras.
Yeah he did. He put it on pole and was leading by the length of the straight when they came in for a pit stop and the water pump failed. They got it fixed but he was out of contention by then. Didn't really matter, the point had been proved. DJR built the fastest Sierras on the planet. Dick said in his book he had been screwed over by Rouse in the early days of the Sierras development in Australia, which prompted him to develop the car himself in house. He took great delight in thrashing the British cars.
Testament to how good they were is Cosworth have one of Dick's cars in their display rooms as an example of the best of its type. That says something.
