- This time around I'm hanging out at an Assemblies of God church in Springfield, Missouri with Pastor Saehee Duran. This church, called Life360 Church, is built with the Gospel and the immigrant community in mind. I've never been to a church like this, and I suspect you'll find it as compelling as I did.

Suwon Central Baptist Church in 2002, I was a brand new believer in the US Army, and some friends in the barracks brought me there for the English language service. @stresser 123 I happen to know her and her husband personally, which is unusual for TH-cam. We met in South Korea. Let me just say that in my opinion, she is right in the center of God's will. Maybe you've focused a little too closely on a single verse from Paul, and not enough on the importance of all the women recorded in Scripture.

Whenever I get a little tingle in my spine cautiously wondering if that "version of Christianity" is spreading false teachings or secretly a cult I remember this verse from the New Testament.
Mark 9:38-40 “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us."
So now I try not to judge haphazardly just based on their "group" and let the individual person's "fruit" show me what they truly believe. That woman truly seems to want to love others as Jesus commanded.
Hi JB, I have been in an AOG church in Australia for many years. I am not sure if there is a difference between us and our USA brothers and sisters, but we are focussed on believing the Bible and church planting. It's certainly not a cult: people are free to come and go, there is no shunning, no secrets, or secret meanings or weird meetings and unlike some churches, no special church membership. Our worship was always orderly and no one was shouting, screaming and throwing people on the floor.
For us, it's all about Jesus. No one is doing any weird rituals. Having being in a very conservative denomination before (non-Pentecostal), the only difference is the music is louder and we have to watch out for the same threats to the church, such as conflicts, being too concerned with music rather than God, all the usual attacks that the book of Ezra portrays. May the Lord bless you and keep you as you continue to seek and serve Him.
A beautiful point, though there is a season for all things, lest we forget drinking from cool aid rather than wine.
Except for the part where she's biblically disqualified from eldership. Don't budge on Scripture, no matter how sincere she seems. She's just sincerely wrong.

Amen sibling! Christianity had never been as much a hemogony as sometimes it would like to present itself. It absorbs local traditions and weave them back into the seamless fabric of God's tapestry. The sacred fire is with any of us who gather in his name! Relativism is silly - but pluralism can truly work. I like to think about it as healthy competition to keep this game of God alive. Keeps us all sharp and introspective band reflexive upon our own faith. God wills it!!
"If you love God , you cannot help but love what he loves" - that gave me that wave of joy that moves you to tears. It's that feeling. It fills me with pathos becuase I can never explain it to my friends who look at religion and shrug their shoulders.
I love these types of videos they help me understand other denominations. Even if I disagree.
Same here. The point isn't to form some kind of fake unity where everyone pretends to think the same thing (or nothing at all), but rather to listen to, understand, and appreciate people who are coming at the same thing in a different way.

@@OatPancake I am not a big fan of multiculturalism nor a fan of the amount of immigration America has. This church doesn’t really care which is totally fine. I don’t mind what this church is doing because I believe all kind of people should believe in God. However when it becomes all people’s in one nation I think, politically speaking, that’s a recipe for disaster. So no I don’t disagree with this church in any major way I don’t believe but it’s hard to tell from this small glimpse.
@@anonymousthanks4603 I see. We all have our opinions. I myself believe that multiculturalism is what makes the United States great. We can either let it destroy us or we can make it a strength and let it unite us.
@@OatPancake i understand your view and it is a common one. I do however suggest you research the negative of multiculturalism on top of the positive. To me it is not logical to conclude that many people with nothing in common can unite under one flag without conflict such as the ethnic wars of Yugoslavia.
In some ways, this church reminds me of the one I went to while in grad school: people from every tongue and tribe and nation. I will never forget how overwhelmed I felt the first time I stepped into the building and saw the rainbow of people all worshiping and praying and listening to the Word together. So very, very beautiful.
Even if you disagree with their theology, you should appreciate their desire to bring the gospel to all cultures and even inviting people from other religious backgrounds with the desire of sharing the gospel. I know many churches that are comfortable with their own congregation in their own neighborhood and don't try to reach out to others. There's a huge difference between writing a check to a charity or going on a mission trip vs actually inviting those people into our lives and engaging in genuine fellowship
The assembly of God church has always had a huge emphasis on missionary work.

Thanks for hitting an AoG church Matt. Beautiful to see the fruit from this community Pastor Duran gets to lead. As someone from a more Reformed Baptist background myself, its easy to become insulated in your own church tradition and functionally act as if God is only working in your sphere. God had to work on my heart the last few years to show me that the Spirit supersedes theological lines. I own a coffee shop here in Coastal Southern California. One of my most Christ-like employees is a kid from an AoG church. I love seeing God work through our siblings and I think you are helping cultivate this in many people. Keep up the awesome work!
I grew up in AG and have since experienced some other denominations and when they found out that i grew up AG, i was literally teased for it in front of the group. knowing the people, it was all "in good fun," but this video treated Assemblies with great respect and you just listened and that's what we need more of. I am still trying to establish my beliefs now based on scripture and not just the church i happened to end up at as a kid, so I'm not sure i agree with AG as a whole, but this video did remind me of some of what i really loved about it growing up, the focus on bringing God's good news of redemption to all people. Thanks for being willing to listen to people who think differently than you.
Grew up AG (PK), now in a more conservative denomination, but also appreciate how Matt graciously interacted with the pastor. I would be happy to have people tease me in good fun - more than one person has asked me, seriously, "Isn't that a cult?" Pentecostals do some things right, a few things I disagree with, but "cult" is not a word I would associate with AG as a movement.
@@circuitrider8700 nope. Definitely not a cult haha. One of the reasons I like going to an AG church is the commitment to the authority of Scripture over all else, and the firm belief in the deity of Christ. I don't know of any "cult" that affirms those things.
@@circuitrider8700 fully agree. oddly, growing up in my particular family had me believing other denominations might be cults. but that was about my fam, not my church. 🤣
@@aNeighbour the denomination as a whole is committed to the authority of Scripture, absolutely. There is a great sermon by Rick DuBose on that topic entitled "Bible Engaged". It was preached at Grand Rapids First Assembly and starts around the 52-minute mark. Problems arise when you add anything other than God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) to the statement "the Bible plus".. Sadly, there are a lot of AG congregations doing just that nowadays in the name of church growth.

Wow. I was so moved by this woman and this church. So much humility and inclusion and just really doing Church how I feel Church could be done better. I don't like the formal Sundays where you go in you greet someone which is phony, then you sing, then the pastor does his sermon. That is so boring to me. I have left many churches because there's no life in those churches. I loved her enthusiasm about making sure that everyone Christian or non-Christian can feel welcome at their Church. I love that the kids can give testimony and anyone can get up and share. I just love the whole way this church is put together. Thank you Matt for taking us along on this beautiful Journey. This one was special for me.
I was caught up in the emotion that she seemed to behind her words. I was wondering if there was something in the editing that we missed that started the emotions or she this just her heart as she is talking to a camera and /or people who might not share her viewpoint? I thought that you did great job here, and I found the video very moving.
Catholic here. I like this church very very much. There's a lot of awesome stuff going on here. (Sting of envy/inspiration telling me to get my church hanging out better now. We're in-and-out businesslike people, with the community element optional and less emphasized. We need to up our game!)

I VIVIDLY remember worshipping and learning and fellowshipping as a brand new Christian in an international, cross-denominational, multilingual worship service in little chapel on the side of the massive (by my standards) Suwon Central Baptist Church. Pastor Damon Duran led the services, and she played piano. 18 years ago, when they were newly wed, her English wasn't quite as good as it is now.
I had friends from something like 15 different countries. We all spoke at least a little English and all follow Jesus. It was a highlight of my life as a believer! That time is part of my testimony, and really frames how I view the worldwide body of Christ. Thank you Saehee; please tell Damon I say hello.

I'm not even a christian, but I was always interested in religions especially the metaphysics and world view of them. This series helps me a lot to know more about these different denominations.
I really liked this video! I love how I feel like every church you visit has a difference aspect of it that represents Christ, even if my theology is not the same. The way God tugs at peoples hearts in different ways I find fascinating. Can't wait for the other videos!

I grew up Pentecostal in the A/G, but I left it soon after I graduated college because of racism in my old congregation. This is so encouraging to see A/G churches like this one take immigrant outreach seriously. I love it.
Wow....so sad to hear about racism in the church. It ought not to be so. My experience in AG churches has been much more in this vein. Right now in fact. I'm working with a Nicaraguan past to plant another multi cultural AG church in Branson Missouri to reach out to the various people who are coming into the area. I'm excited to see what God is doing and is going to do.
There were a few college revivals through AG as recent as within the past 10 yrs. It affected missions and pastors throughout the denomination. My guess is this pastor maybe a direct witness to that. Hearing the passion in her voice was incredibly moving.

Women pastors are forbidden, it is supposed to be men in the office of an elder/pastor (Titus 1). Women are to keep silence in the church (I Timothy 2).
This place is awesome.
I had a big smile on my face as soon as I heard about them planting 10 churches per year.
One thing I found very interesting was how they managed to integrate long sermons into the service without putting people off.
I always like it when churches have long sermons but I understand people's reluctance when they're worried about putting people off.
If the dinner setting makes it possible to have best of both worlds, that's really great.

Hey Matt, I grew up in a Pentecostal church, and this one's totally different from what I'm used to. It looks like there's a lot of different church communities in the denomination. I'd be interested to see videos in more Pentecostal churches or even in a Charismatic church. Keep up the great work!
There are many different pentecostal denominations. Some are way crazy almost to snake handling to end of the spectrum all the way to nearly indistinguishable from any other evangelical church.

There are different "versions" of Pentecostalism. You have the oneness doctrine in the United Pentecostal Church which denies the Trinity and requires its members to follow certain rules, such as no wearing makeup or jewelry and wearing dresses that cover the legs and arms. Then, you have Trinitarian Pentecostals such as the Assemblies of God, Churches of God (Cleveland, TN), and Pentecostal Churches of God who do not have such strict rules.

I am an AoG missionary. I have served overseas and currently as a missionary to college campuses. I did not come from an AoG background or even a christian one, but the thing that made me fall in love with this denomination with all the warts it may have was this evangelistic and missional impulse that Pastor Saehee clearly demonstrates. Pastor Saehee and Matt, thank you for articulating what I could not!

This was so good. I am so challenged by this church. So much prayer is needed so much action is needed.
We went to a church in Texas that was multi cultural, what a joy, people of all colors, so much enthusiasm,so fabulous
Keep in mind there's a huge varieties of expression within the A/G. Some A/G churches are almost indistinguishable from a Southern Baptist church... At others you are just waiting for them to start the snake handling... Some are very outreach focused, some have a large emphasis on the worship time. Each church is a "sovereign assembly" so there's a lot of freedom in how a church functions, as long as they hold to the 16 Fundamental Truths.

@@ohioitis200 if they are a General Council affiliated church, they are sovereign. If they are a missions church or parent-affiliated church or a church operating under the supervision of their local Ministry Network, then they aren’t.
I was skeptical at first watching this because I was wondering if this would be the only view the Assembly of God churches you would give...Which I'm not a part of but I have great admiration for.
But knowing we get a few more and one where you speak with the AoG president is exciting! I'm sure I'll learn a lot!!

10 church plantings this year sounds rather ambitious though, especially when [many] congregations are financially struggling during the current situation. I wish her well with it though!
God is in control of all situations. And so many people are seeking right now. John 4:35, KJV: "Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest."

Sometime I'd love to see you do a video on a Convergence Church! If you've never heard of convergence Christianity before then please do a video on it sometime. Its a really interesting approach to church and I think it would really lend itself to what your trying to do through these videos!
I enjoyed this video very much. I grew up AoG and attend on most of my adult. I left the AoG to join the Lutheran church mainly on the doctrine of Christ presence in the bread and wine. I miss the zeai and missionary emphasis of the Assemblies.

Its like our church has a Halloween event where we give out loot bags to kids every year and it gives people a chance to see that we are open to all,
yesterday was no different except we did it outside and a mum and daughter came up to give us a bunch of flowers to say thank you!
She said her daughter wanted to do something for us as we were giving out candy to her.
It touched us and it made a connection, what more could you ask for?

I was baptized in an Assemblies of God church but I now, like Matt, disagree with their interpretations on some stuff. My brother is charismatic/pentacostal and there's just no denying that those guys are killing it when it comes to spreading the gospel. He's done serious mission work in Nepal and all over Africa. Whatever disagreements we have, we know them by their fruit and I'm seeing some good fruit in this video. Humbling indeed.

Was saved at Sheffield Assembly of God in Kansas City in 1982 and later attended Evangel. Sheffield church is an inner city church that still tithed 10% of their church income to missions!.
The AG is an amazing organization dedicated to evangelism and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I would so so so appreciate if you were to give your take on the "Local Church" movement. They hold the teachings of Witness Lee in high regard, and use their own version of the bible, recovery version, which is published by living stream ministries.
I've had a tough time over the past few years deciding what I think about what they're all about and what makes them different from other denominations. So I'd really really really appreciate if one of these days you could help me out with your experience and thoughts on them.
I almost joined a Witness Lee movement in college, about a decade ago. I can’t speak for what this particular “local church” movement, but what I experienced was a cult. They sent a bunch of people to the college to pose as a student club, although none were students. They would read the words of Witness Lee, not actual scripture, at their meetings. By “read”, I actually mean force everyone present to chant in unison. Instead of singing, they would tonelessly chant worship songs as a group. Not a sin, but a super creepy thing to do loudly in the quad. They also have this apocryphal belief that anyone who says “Jesus Christ” three times is saved, so they try to trick people into doing it, like a game of Bloody Mary.
Watchman Nee and Witness Lee's theology is heretical. They teach Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit as three in "oneness", without any distinction of separate personhoods, one Being, which the historical Christian faith holds to.
@@Thaumazo could you explain this to me in as simple terms as possible, I think it'd be very helpful for anyone, including me, who might read your response to understand, in layman's terms, what you are trying to say
@@louiefelipemurphy It sounds like he's saying that they reject the Trinity of the Godhead, which is a key tenet of Christianity. In simple terms that means that they see Yahweh (God the Father), Jesus/Yeshua of Nazareth (God the Son), and the Holy Spirit/Ghost as separate beings. This means they believe they are separate gods. Whereas in the Bible it's made clear that God exists in 3 main forms to humanity. Therefore rejection of the Trinity is a major point of contention if they claim to be Christian as Christianity is monotheistic, not polytheistic.

I was saved into AoG and miss the enthusiasm. The high level of expectation that God will be present and active in services is infectious and utterly joyful.
I have a more conservative theology now but Oh Boy do I miss how much FUN churching used to be 😊

@@Jordan18561 A conservative theology is necessarily Calvinist and doesn’t include the high level of intervention by Holy Spirit in services eg Tongues, Prophetic Utterances and does include the Regulative Principle of Worship, not the Pentecostal 3 hours of all-in worship :)

The Bible says that tongues, prophecy and sound teaching are all things that we should seek after.
And the Regulative Principle of Worship cannot tell you how short or long the prayer, singing or sermon should be...so I think we have some freedom in that regard.

Thanks for doing these videos. I joined a AOG church a year ago after being in an Evangelical church for 37 years (which was a wonderful church) . I had not heard of the church before and honestly thought it was made up. I have found the heart of my current AOG church to very much be inline with what is observed here and with your other video of the denomination head. As a "newcomer" it is very encouraging to see this video. Great content keep it up!
I like the introduction to a new denomination of Christianity. But in the interview, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of deep theological questions relating to baptism, Communion, Heaven/Hell, etc. I understand there will be future videos with the president but it would be interesting hearing from the pastor herself too. I hear that secular culture is all about wokeness and political correctness, but I appreciate the Pastor here being humble in the Gospel and at the same time, not falling into the temptation of secular culture.
You should read the 16 fundamental truths of the Assemblies of God. They're all online. But yeah, he'll get to all of them in the interview later I'm sure.
For right now though, baptism and communion are considered to be ordinances of the church. And are in distinguishable from any Baptist Church. Full immersion. Communion is symbolic.
Heaven and Hell are literal eternal places.
Yes, she seemed great! I would have like to hear more from her. A local church pastor is perfect to be able to connect the theology with its boots on the ground impact. You'll have to go back Matt!
11:40 Oh! We're the ones who have the secret stuff about God...Do you see the discrepancy between what Jesus did at the Lord's Supper and what the CC has made of the altar bread? What Jesus had in mind looks very much like what these people are actually doing. He got together with his best company, had a great feast and talked about the serious issues of the day. The Old Covenant came to an end at that supper table, and the New Covenant began. Thanks for an enlightening TMBH.

So I used to visit a friend's AOG youth group back in the 90s and while I certainly had my differences on theology, they were a loving bunch of people.

I grew up AG, and while I lament their lack of doctrinal focus/desire, I do remember that it was always a huge focus of theirs to point to believers in other cultures and celebrate that. It seems that kind of went away as I grew up, but when I was little, the huge sanctuary was surrounded by flags of many different countries, and pictures of believers from all over.
Matt, what are your thoughts on female pastors?
I went to assembly of God churches for 20+ years and I no longer do ( I go to a vineyard church.) As this video started I was skeptical as the church seemed gimmicky. But, I do feel as I watched it felt very genuine and authentic in its approach. One of the things that has really bothered me for a long time is how divided black and white churches are in America. Watching this video makes me think this would be one way that we could bridge that divide and become more united.
I like how they made this place of worship a place everyone feels welcome to, regardless of ethnicity or nationality or race or religious background. I love the diversity.
On a practical note, could you share how this church funds the sunday food distribution?

I wish more churches and ministries like this existed. I genuinely love meeting people from different backgrounds, and I think it really showcases the global reach of Christianity.

She is a special person.. It makes me wonder about alot of things.. She is a powerful soul..
I think many of the more conservative denominations could really learn from the spirit of community and worship of Pentecostal churches such as this.

Its like a bridge or gateway to the lord for people who otherwise probably would not go to church.. Its a very interesting open freestyle of concept that at least get people to know the lord. Its a place to start or stay..

Hey you're really accomplishing a positive thing by doing these videos, as an example... I would have never taken the time to sit down and listen to her explain her church for certain reasons and even though from where I sit it still seems like the emphasis is overly placed in one area, I can now definitely respect what she is doing & we don't have to perfectly agree.

Matt, if you go to Missouri again, could you visit Orthodox priest Rev. Moses Berry who is was raised in the A.M.E. church but became Orthodox?
It would be great if you could make some videos with the different branches of Protestantism. Maybe in the us is very common but in a lot of catholic countries there are a lot of denominations but it is not very clear what are the differences between them. Obviously some are more popular than others but for example in this case Assemblies of God I have seen but I don't have any idea of what it means or even the Pentecostal movement you mentioned it could be thought as a general map for your videos.
