Totally underrated song, I always thought it was a George song because of, Here Comes the Sun. This melody with the astonishing vocal harmonies is amazing. If you want to know how it feels being completely stoned, this is how it feels. Your a natural teacher, thank you.
Written by John Lennon, and Lennon actually plays the pattern using Travis finger picking technique (similar to "Dear Prudence", and "Julia"), while Harrison plays the low opening riff and then the high soloing. The song was loosely influenced by Fleetwood Mac's "albatross" (the Peter Green guitar sound).
Incidentally, I think George Harrison borrowed (or stole) part of John's chord progression sequence and melody here (right before the Spanish sounding lyrics) to later shape his own song "Something".

Here comes the Suuhun...uunnnn.....King

Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover
.
If you like the feel of this song. Check out Fleetwood Mac - Albatross
This is fuckin' great, man. Really well done mixing these parts together.
Thanx so much - I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's such an excellent Beatles song... the whole Abbey Road album is amazing :-)
When I heard this song first time, it was almost spiritual experience. That's the magic of real music, it returns you to present moment where everything is happening 🙂
Anyway, my sincere thanks Howard for making the effort to do this lesson.
"Hopefully you're pretty handy with barre chords, if not it can be a bit of a challenge... But a good challenge" Thats a pretty awesome message there.
Thanks for the lesson, the best one out here!!!
:-) Thanks so much for watching!
Always reminds me of Albatross by Fleetwood Mac. I love it.
They actually added the reverb because they were inspired by that song
You are the best teacher sir. You have done it clearly and easy to follow. Tanx
most excellent! The greatness of the Beatles comes alive again with this...
Howard, thank you, nicely done..... I'm glad I was looking for this classic today. What a wonderful band.
Proves Music doesn't have to be Complicated to be Great just Original The Beatles are the Greatest Biggest Act in the history of Show Business nobody else is remotely close!!!!!!
Tackling this one bit by bit... You're a great teacher, thank you taking the time to share this.
Thank you so much for watching... and your very kind words.
Howard, such a good stuff you give us on your channel !! much appreciated !
also not so frequently seeing Beatles with jazz stuff all together . thank you.
Bro. I love you for posting this. Thank you so much. I'm in heaven playing it now.
Beautiful, thanks so much for posting.
This is easily my second-favorite song from Abbey Road featuring the line “here comes the sun”
Nicely taught, thank you for the lesson 😊✌️
Great lesson. Been working on this song. The chords are beautiful.
Thanks
Thanx... It really is a beautiful song
Beautiful lesson.....Lennon would be smiling up there watching this..😊😇
Ohh, and well done! Good job!
I like your lessons and your encouraging approach to teaching. 👍
Thank you! :-)
Great song, great teacher!! Thanks!!!
Thank you :-)
Love this, what type of effect are you using, phaser?
It's a Stereo Chorus with a bit of Verb and Delay... and a clean single coil pickup-type setting. Thanks so much for watching - Howard
Wonderful lesson! Thank you!
Gorgeous song (as everything is, on Abbey Road), and wonderful arrangement, thanks a bunch!
Thanks for listening
Merci, merci, merci ! Absolument parfait !
thank you for the video
This is great. For some reason, I never even considered trying to learn this song. Would've been great when I was in a 70s band. We played mostly Jimmy page and ccr, jethro tull, etc. This woulda been great. Thanks!
Man you sound cool 😂 what guitar did you use in the band? How long did the band last and how was it formed in the first place. 70s a really good time for rock music
Wow and wow, wow excellent lesson thank you! So clear master
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad it was of some help - Howard
My 6 strings accoustic is in the hospital for few months (because I broke a mechanic and it s very long time to have this kind of mechanics from Germany😉 even I'm living in Switzerland) so I play on my 12strings accoustic and it s no differences... maybe it is for simplify the game, but it s ok like this😉👍 Thank you for your video, I made a big break of 13 years playing the guitar and I begin for 6 months... my ears often are wrong when I heard a song and want to play her... for example I before played C CM7 C7 F (like "Something") and you played right with C CM7 Fm7 and Am7😉 so that is why it's better for me to see well done video... thank you very much and have a nice day and you made mine🤗☀️🌈
This is the best version I've ever seen, well done. Part 2 as well !!
Thank you so much :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart especially for the complete version by 1 guitar ( including McCartney lines, ya!) + fills
By far
AWESOME!!!
That was brilliant, thank you.
Thanks :-)
Thank you! Awesome tutorial.
Glad you enjoyed it - Thanks for watching :-)
I just listened to Lennon's guitar on an isolated track. He took an open E6 chord and moved it up to the 6th fret with the 1st and 6th strings open. He finger picked it with the same pattern he used on Dear Prudence. The variation of the Travis pattern that Donovan showed him.
That's correct :-) But the tutorial is a "mosh up" of both John and George's parts, as well as a bit of Paul's - Making it a fun way to play it on one guitar.
Great lesson, very smartly presented. And natural, too... you could grow tomatoes on that fretboard!
:-) Thanx for watching!
Thank you for this
Thank you!
very nice and helpful. thx
I sure know a Major Dude when I see one. Saweet stuff Howard the MD!
thanks for the mysterious chord at the end of the intro!!!!!!
It really is a cool chord :-)
Thank you.
The Beatles best song. La mejor canción de The Beatles
It's an all time favorite of mine as well
Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much! :-)))
Thanx so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed
Excellent!
Many thanks!
I pretty much would do the same thing with Sun King....very close. I'd insert the bass parts for color. Your ring finger, starting it off is a good idea. I've done it a couple ways, but I knew it was a slide and not a hammer on. I also like how u add the A extension there. For awhile there i was wondering if Harrison was playing that lick while Lennon picked the F#m7 thing.
When I get off work tonight I'm going to do it your way, with that little lick right at the end. I would do something like that but add those 2 or 3 bass notes before they say sing "Ahhhhhhhh".
thank you
much appreciated
Nice! You should do the whole B side medley--some great solos thee!
I agree :-)
Qual o modelo desta guitarra? adorei o som dela
Oh carajo! Muchas gracias por el video
ЗАМЕЧАТЕЛЬНО!!!
perfect!!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it... I hope to do some more Beatles soon :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart did you use a pedal for this? And if yes what is it?
Sorry... Somehow I missed this one. Yes, I used a Jyoti Chorus Pedal. They are relatively inexpensive, but have a nice vintage sound
Thanks for the lesson. I just saw a clip on TH-cam where Mick Fleetwood heard John or George say (in 1969) this song was inspired by the Albatross. That F#m7 chord is hard hitting the b string at the 5th. My favourite part of the song too
Getting the pinky over to that 5th fret can be a 'bugger' - but worth it :-) Thanx so much for watching!
Divine ! No other word for it...There IS a God.!
Major dude! haha
Oh shit you play very beatiful the guitar
fuuuuck its so difficult, my hand is a mess!
A would be something. ;P
PS. Nice tone btw.
is this tuned in standard? I'm currently in drop D
Yes... it's standard tuning
Yes, is a song by John!
Indeed it is! He was such an eclectic writer... so many wonderful songs :-)
Hey man I had once known how to play most of Abbey Road and I love how you added in bass lines and methods to tie it all together. I did the same thing. This and part 2 really helped me get this song back. I do have one comment. Those F#M/F#M7 arpeggios are so hard, why not play them with an A/A6 chord formation? Anyways once I realized my old A/A6 arpeggio for that part sounds the same I got the rest down and sounds really good, thank you.
Thanks... I'm glad it was helpful. Either way on the chord arpeggios works great - It's an arrangement for 1 guitar, plus a few of Paul's bass notes, so I like to include the F# in there for the fullness it creates... plus it sounds kinda cool coming off of those bass fills :-) Their arrangements were always so good!
I am using the Google translator to write this. I wonder what is this guitar? I don't know ANYTHING about guitars and models ... But I'm wanting to learn to play, and I loved the sound of that guitar.
Hi - it's an Ibanez RG series. Thanx for watching :-)
damn, how do you get that tone?
It's actually pretty easy... Pickup selector in the mid position, a bit of stereo chorus, and a pinch of verb and delay. I used an Orange amp on the clean channel 🎸
How do you bar on the 2nd fret and keep your ring on the fourth and play your pinky on the fifth without killing your thumb and it sounding like garbage?
Your thumb should be about midway behind the neck... Bring your elbow in toward your body to help open up the palm of your hand and keep your hand straight - and then? Practice :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart Thanks so much! Practicing it like that has definitely helped a ton.
Sound very similar in theme and tone at various points to Pete Green's Albatross which was released 6 months after Sun King... just saying...what you say, Peter Green? Any influence?
It's always a possibility :-)
Love this, Backing track?
Thanx Raul - I'm actually working on a 'download' section at 247guitar.com where viewers can download backing tracks, tabs, etc - It all takes time, but hopefully soon
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart Howard, I join the chorus in appreciation of such a great, tasty, and faithful rendition of this JL/Beatles classic. I'm 66 and have played classical guitar my whole life. However, I also love classic rock and roll. I picked up the electric about a year ago to learn how to play all these great Beatle classics. At this stage in life, it is very hard to put a band together! (Everybody is either dead, creaky or too cranky.) Any chance, that you will post the backing track to your version of the Sun King relatively soon? It is the only clean one out there. Happy to pay for it. If not, no problem. I still love your stuff.
Brilliant! Am I missing the tab?
Hi - Sun King is one of the few videos I've done where I haven't included TAB. I chose to simply verbally and visually walk the viewer through the lesson. Maybe, if time permits, I might go back at some point and include it. Thanks so much for watching :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart Thank you. Not trying to be critical....but I think the instruction + the tab in the lower screen is brilliant. It is by far the most effective teaching stye for me. That you combine guitar parts is so rare and needed. It is agonizing for a somewhat advanced player to have to listen through all the first finger, first fret, first string etc.. Just discovered your work today and I am grateful. That you have great taste in music is all the better. Thanks a ton, Howard.
amp settings for this?
Very clean tone. Mids at 5, bass at 5 - Treb about 7 or 8. A touch of chorus and very as well. Thanks for watching.

Are you Tony Stark?
Blinking Beatles, how good where they.
They were incredible... absolutely ahead of everyone
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart Yeh the whole world cant be wrong.
its so hard to tell which fingers youre using lmao
Thumbs down is the guy who struggles with bar chords!
:-)
