  • Ever wandered what the Bible says about Paradise? What does the Bible mean when it talks about παράδεισος, the Garden of Eden, and even the New Jerusalem?

Good research and explanation Ben! Thanks. The Persian word for paradise - as you know - is pardis which is pronounced as /parˈdiːs/ .

@@BenGristUK :D Yes, your explanation was very clear; it's just that you pronounced the Persian word not quite right! You know, a strange thing is going on regarding dictionaries about quite a few common words in English (like the word bad and others) which are originally Persian! Whereas the Oxford Dictionary normally does not mention the Persian root and suggests Arabic which is wrong and a quite different language altogether (like French and English), the Etymology dictionary does mention the actual Persian root!

Thanks for the feedback Alex, I agree, my pronunciation was trying to follow the more classical/older style of Persian pronunciation which had more of an ‘ei’ sound at the end, however now with modern Iranian pronunciation it is a clear ‘I’ sound. It is good to include the correct etymology when available as you say my brother, thank you!

@@BenGristUK It wasn't so much the pronunciation of the ending sounds of /parˈdiːs/. It was the sound which came after the phoneme /p/
. The sound which follows is /a/ as in cat and not /ɑː/ as in arm. Also the primary stress falls on the second syllable.
I have studied English from childhood and later Arabic, Italian & French. My family kept getting me private lessons in various musical instruments but I would lose interest pretty quickly regardless of whatever instrument I was supposed to learn. The reason I was sent for private education to England at the age of 15 was that my father realised my talent was in languages and not music when I won the children's national competition for mastery of the English language on the "Educational TV" that was broadcast nationally at that time.
Having said all that, I believe your knowledge of and interest in languages are deeper than mine; and this can easily be seen by the language-specific videos you kindly produce and I enjoy. Keep up the good work and look after yourself.
