Yes to all the ins for the channel! And looking forward to see the home transformation!
I think it's not too late to do a Visconti and Dante video. I don't neccessarily watch your videos as pen reviews, especially not the more high concept ones. I see them more demonstrating fountain pens as a lifestyle element in action and trying to evoke the atmosphere and feelings that might be associated with a city or an author. Videos like that can serve a lot of purposes for a viewer that don't even have to be connected to the particular pen that is featured. It could for example inspire someone to get their Lamy Safari and write out some of their favourite quotes and spend a joyful hour. Something they might not have thought of if it wasn't for the video.
Wishing you a happy and video ideas filled 2025!

Happy New Year HJ and all the community. HJ, I took the bait after watching your many praises of the Carene and bought myself a Carene L'Essence du Bleu. Thought about the Reflections of Paris but I really think the blue is prettier. It is as beautiful and smooth writing as you have said. It's all your fault (and Vanessa Langton's)! It cheered me up on this very cold day. And thanks to Atlas Stationers and their HJ discount I feel just a little less guilty. Thank you for what you do for all of us.

Funny - we happen to be having a pre-C New Year tackle of a very dark grey wall in lounge bought that way. It's so depressing. Farrow and Ball have a showroom in their Dorset county home and advisors there to help with colour choosing. So we're replacing the grey with... Bancha 🍵! Yep, green tea, delicious, dark and tonal in different kinds of light. And we have the same grey in chalk paint on old 1970's wardrobes, serviceable for now, but new paint will help. They were once old white gloss, previous owners slapped the grey over them, but it's bubbling up and already flaked off the hinges. We bought two colours, the other is Incarnadine, so we may do a two tone, doors different colour to frame. But that won't be until later in the year during some leave as every door has to be paint stripped first. Just looked up Pigeon on our colour card, pleasant but too towards grey for our mission to be free of it. We'd say the equivalent tone but going towards green would be Lichen. If you do want to go warmer, then there's Picture Gallery Red, your chair and painting would go so well with that too. For a unique Dorset county name there's always Mizzle, that persistent (miserable?) drizzle spray kind of rain, two up from pigeon on the colour card! But currently, it's snowing! Happy New Year, healthy and inky. Is 'paint' now 'wall ink'? Talking of which, cult pens' deep dark ink is nearly black and MontBlanc's Irish Green is a good deep green too, both 'solid' choices in the green range. CONGRATULATIONS ON 20K 🖋✍📖✒🥳

In the UK, green ink has two main associations: Apparently, it was the choice of the original 'C' in MI6, and the tradition continues to this day. More commonly, it's been associated with obsessive letter writers to local newspapers, politicians etc (known as 'the green ink brigade').
Personally to me, my dad, as Head of Materials for Rolls-Royce Aerospace, used green ink in his Sheaffer No Nonsense pens with Oblique nibs, so his comments on plans, papers, memos etc were very easily recognised. I'm very pleased that I cleaned and recommissioned his pens, and sourced a green ink he loved, and he used for the last five years of his life, until shortly before his death in September of 2024.

The Ferris Wheel Press narrative that is generally ignored is Canada. They seem to be moving a bit away from it (sadly), but they have a lot of great Canadian-themed inks that reference the landscape, geography, history, and culture of Canada. And they are not too light or fussy. Roaring Patina Black came with an “Echoes of Eaton” pen to celebrate the art deco history on both coasts. Down the Don Valley celebrates the valley that is an integral part of Toronto’s landscape. Algonquin Maple is based on the great Algonquin Park, heavily featured in iconic Canadian art. They did a “Fashion District” group that named the streets in Toronto that were full of fashion businesses in the city (Bathurst, Spadina..)… It’s sad that their business missteps and light inks dominate conversation about a brand that has actually showcased Canada. (Which, if you live in Canada, is a nice change of pace from the dynamics of living in the shadow of US media/cultural dominance.)

Regarding the question of pigments or dyes: No, not all inks are pigments in suspension, certainly NOT fountain pen inks. Almost ALL fountain pen inks have exclusively a dye or a mix of dyes as colorant. They basically have to, because fountain pens' chances to survive a pigmented ink are rather slim. Remember, you should never put Indian ink or Chinese ink in a fountain pen, and the reason is exactly that, - they are pigmented inks, for dip pens only.
In recent years, there have emerged a few pigmented fountain pen inks. The most known (and the best and only one that has good justification) is 'Platinum Carbon'. The technology here is that the pigment particles are incredibly small, nano-pigments. So small, it's hoped, that 'Brownian movements" should keep them individually separated and suspended indefinitely. That "works" somewhat. My experience is that you have to be wary and pay attention to the pen, same as with Iron Gall inks, and always be prepared to flush out and clean the pen if things seem fishy. IMO these inks should only be used in cartridge/converter pens with replaceable feeds. Not because they are a high risk, but because it's so stupid to ruin an expensive or irreplaceable pen for no reason.
The quick and simple explanation for what "dye" and "pigment" are, is this: Pigments are solid, small particles that are insoluble in both its vehicle and binder. Dyes are a solution of a colorant, where the colorant's molecules themselves swim around independently in the vehicle. The colorant of a dye typically stays soluble indefinitely, if left to its own, even if the vehicle evaporates. Thus one typically use some means of adding a coupler to attach the dye molecule to what you want to dye. This is usually called "mordant" or dye fixative. This is how textiles are dyed and how "document" inks work.
Of course, that is not the whole and complete truth about pigments and dyes, but for keeping this short and concise, it has to do.

Welcome back dear friend. Happy new year!
My suggestion would be, don't worry about the critics. The book of war, "a ancient Chinese book", says a warrior's best teacher's are his enemy's. Being a gentleman might not be in voge, however that's not your problem! Your a true Man, a human being!
You always interest me,becase you put your heart into your work. You continue as you are.
Ken an English man in Latvia.

Month in and month out, I hood my breath in hopes that HJ, the man who does a show about writing and journaling, who I think said he met his wife at his museum job (?), would tell us that he had finally decided to do a show on Vincent’s letters to Theo. I get man.. I don’t like that Visconti VanGogh either and it’s also old news.. and sadly, it kind of means, that story will never be discussed on this show. There’s so much there too.
Im not going to google to get exact quotes but someone made some hateful remarks to Post Malone about his music and he made a calm mature comment that it was ok because the music was for his fans not the haters. So, just take that approach to digesting rude comments.. and also, we do love the personal videos. If it makes you feel better, the core HJ gang DOES appreciate them.

That Van Gogh video will come one day, probably once I get a Visconti or someone else featuring him. Thank you!

Haters and critics: I'm sure you already know this, but I'm telling it anyway. - It's not you. It doesn't matter who you are or what you post. There are ALWAYS going to be a line of haters showing up. That is an integral part of how internet works. That's it really.

Quite a following you have assembled. A good thing. Then I don't have to feel guilty when I miss it. Which I usually do, these days. But I can always catch it afterwards. Not quite the same thing perhaps, but...
