    I've used the ketogenic way of eating for over five and a half years to put my BD2 into remission without medication. I was a guest on Dr Iain and Matt Bazucki's podcast, Bipolarcast, Episode 11. I've since studied with Dr Georgia Ede, Beth Zupec-Kania, and Denise Potter and now help others recover from bipolar disorder. I love being a part of this incredible movement!

    Like my friend @michaelblive, I'm grateful to Dr. Iain Campbell for his advocacy, research, honesty, and encouragement to those of us who have bipolar disorder.
    I took part in this survey. I've been doing a vegan ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder the past 15 months, and it has been nothing short of amazing.The lifestyle isn't always easy, but the challenges have been worth it.
    The Metabolic Mind series is my favorite resource for learning about ketogenic diets, and how to use this powerful modality safely.
    You can learn more about how much keto has helped @michaelblive on Dr. Campbell & Matt Baszucki's podcast "Bipolarcast", Show # 20. After you listen, you'll never look at Gatorade quite the same way as you did before...🙂
    Like Michael, I was honored to be a "Bipolarcast" guest and I discussed my vegan ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder & non-vegan topics, too. I invite you to check out Show #23. Take care! 🙂

    Dr., I am a great admirer of your approach to these mental conditions! I'm a teacher, and one of my 14 yr old pupils was recently diagnosed w/ bipolar, autistic and Asperger; also gender disphoria, depression... How can we cope daily and how can we tell parents about these new treatments? I am not a Science teacher, so nobody gives me any credit when I suggest alternative views. Can you share your wisdom on children/teens suffering from this? Thank you.

      You may want to try adding Taurine to your supplements. Start with 1 gram of powder or capsules daily and work up to 6 grams of powder daily. I would recommend up to 6 grams of Glycine daily. I also take 1 gram of Betaine (Tri MethylGlycine) and 1 gram of L-Cysteine daily. These will boost Glutathione production. I credit Pottenger's Human ytt channel for this info. It has worked for me. 19:54

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your question. Some doctors report an increase in hypomania and possibly mania as people transition into ketosis. Others see it as less of an issue, possibly based on how quickly people get into ketosis and what safeguards they have in place as they start ketosis. That's one of the reasons we strongly recommend working with an experienced clinician in these situations. If you're looking for a clinician, you can start at www.diagnosisdiet.com/directory

    I was fatigued and suicidal my whole life. I also had periods of a bit elevated mood. Three weeks ago I dived into keto, almost carnivore. It caused hypomania. I felt so good. I thought YES! Finally I found a cure . Unfortunately it lasted only 10 days. But it has opened my eyes. I diagnose myself with bipolar 2. Now I don't know what to do, go to a doctor and tell that I am bipolar and ask for meds, or simply continue with keto?

      Ketogenic diet is one of the most powerful interventions I have come across in my 17 years as a psychiatric RN. It is not something to be approached lightly.
      I, myself have implemented the ketogenic diet recently and put into remission an antidepressant induced bipolar. I was swinging highs and lows for 13 years, and this is the first round of seasons I'm symptoms free. I also struggled with suicidal ideation that intensified overtime and was disturbing to say the least, on top of the litany of adverse and toxic effects of medications. I share my journey and guidance online.
      One thing that is an absolute MUST if you're attempting to implement ketogenic diet for mental health - and especially if you're on psychiatric medications - you need medical monitoring. You need to surround yourself with as much formal and informal support as possible. You do not want to embark on this journey alone. It can be dangerous.
      As well, this is a long term game and needs to be approached holistically - meaning there are many other simple but powerful interventions that compliment a ketogenic diet. No one factor is responsible for our mental and physical health. There are many different influences that need to be taken in to consideration and addressed appropriately.
      Don't give up. You're on the right track but you need to rally some support with people who understand your situation and can provide you proper guidance and direction as you go along this journey.
      The beginning and transition phases of ketogenic diet are the hardest parts, and where you'll experience the most side effects. For someone who has been "fatigued and suicidal" their whole life, the change in the energy can feel almost destabilizing. However, there are ways to manage this transition phase and move forward.
      You're doing good, in that you're educating yourself and that is key. Ideally, you'll also be supported by someone who has training to guide you on this process. It can be very challenging in the beginning.
      Kind regards,
      Neseret

      @@NeseretBemient thank you ! Unfortunately I live in an extremely conservative country plus I live far away from big towns . I can only get very standardised medical treatment . I know that cause I've tried many times, no mm away from Algorithm. So I am thinking is it worth getting an official diagnosis. Funny ,first I found a cure then I found a disease . I am three weeks on keto. Now I am aware of hypomania, I can easily spot the first signs. I do psychotherapy, that will help also.

    In a carnivore diet, would ones body produce less ketones considering the protein intake is higher than fat? From my understanding only a certain amount of ketones infers therapeutic effects that can't be achieved otherwise

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thanks for your comment. It's interesting how individualized ketone levels are. Many people can routinely produce ketone levels above 2 on a carnivore diet. It may be related to how fatty their food choices are, or it may be an intrinsic variable for each individual. We are also learning more about whether there is a "threshold" effect for ketones. The signal thus far is that people can experience benefits even at low levels of ketosis (0.5 to 1.0 mmol), but may experience greater benefits at higher levels (2-3 mmol). We are excited to continue to learn more as we get more research and clinical experience.

    • @metabolicmind

      As with many things, we need more research and clinical experience. But in many ways, it makes mechanistic sense that improving brain fuel utilization could help those conditions. Hopefully we will learn much more in the near future.
