Thousand Year Door is like the single most important remake they could have chosen to do. Then next up is the big 3D Zelda and Mario games truly remade. Then 2D Mario/Zelda/Metroids. Certain things like Kid Icarus just need a remaster and a sequel, not a remake.

TTYD is definitely a remake. Not only did they change the look of the game, the UI isn't the same, there's a new character that hasn't appeared in the original, there are new signs for professor Frankly and the help center, even some screenshots show some changes in the cutscenes like the Blimp showing all your partners or Flavio actually having a singing animation. Remaster would be like Luigi's Mansion 2 HD where its more or less the exact same game but with updated graphics and textures.

Saying TTYD is a remake because the UI and some models were changed is like saying OoT3D is a remake. OoT3D is a heavily modified port, definitely not starting from the ground up. TTYD might be a remake, but I'm not seeing evidence that it didn't just borrow the source and build on top of that.

I do like the fact Nintendo are pushing more remakes/remasters for modern systems.
One instance for this matter is that not all gamers or gamers to come would have access to classic titles legally since old gaming systems are of the past and would have the opportunity to not be left out.
Or if they manage to hunt down a title, retro resellers spike the cost equivalent to a used gaming system.

  • @PIKMINROCK1

One big thing that is important to recognize for Nintendo is that their business model has generally stayed the same for the past decade or so despite costs going up. They generally maintain a major title each quarter with an extra big seller around October or November in addition to Pokemon. To compensate for that Nintendo is reaching into their back catalog to find appropriate titles that can serve as multimillion sellers. We also see them mostly targeting the GC through 3DS era as those games hold greater value than to be added to a subscription service (or hard to emulate without a second screen for DS/3DS games). I think they can choose games outside of that era for remakes but, it's going to lean hard on those.
Luigi Mansion 2 was a title that kept selling well into the 3DS's life (see the Luigi's Mansion remake on 3DS that released in 2018 for further proof). Like Luigi's Mansion 3 is bigger but, Luigi's Mansion 2 still outsold Ocarina of Time 3D and is the 11th best selling 3DS game. It's just a safe choice. Games in that category I'd chose the 3D Marios not on Switch,3D Zeldas not on Switch, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the 3DS Kirbys. I think original Animal Crossing could also be a safe-ish pick but, they'd need to upgrade the visuals notably. and the GC Mario Party could work but, I'd think they do another Superstars games but boards around those 4 games.

As cool as it is having Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch, I was pretty upset that it was just an upscaled port. The fact that it has a physical version and everything basically means we won't get a full "Pikmin 1 & 2 Remake" for a LONG time.

    • @otaking3582

Personally I'd rather have it be upscaled than a full blown remake. Remakes of GCN games just don't look as good as the originals.

Mario Sunshine is one I'd really like to see a remake of. I love the island aesthetic, the vibes, the way the levels are diverse but feel part of the same place, etc. if they could address some of the more janky elements, poorly designed levels, and some of the busted gimmicks, as well as rethink the progression structure, it would be a much better game.

I’m just happy that Mario RPG fans are eating well with the two best games being remade in a 6 month period. Especially since I never thought Mario RPG would be touched again over splitting the rights with Square. I’ve grown to love the 3D 1:1 remakes like Mario RPG, Link’s Awakening, and Pokemon BDSP this generation.
My biggest problem with remakes is that we’re still missing the best of the Wii U/3DS remakes on Switch. OoT 3D and MM 3D look great in HD if they just wanted to do a straight port, and the Wii U HD versions of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess already have HD assets. Same with Star Fox 64 3D and Luigi’s Mansion 1 with the enhanced mechanics of the 3DS port. If Nintendo doesn’t want to keep selling 3DS games, they need to be on the current system.

A remake is a film, television series, video game, song or similar form of entertainment that is based upon and retells the story of an earlier production in the same medium-e.g., a "new version of an existing film". A remake tells the same story as the original but uses a different set of casts, and may use actors from the original, alter the theme, or change the flow and setting of the story, in addition since a remake is released some time after the original work it may incorporate new technologies, enhancements, and techniques that had not existed or was commonly used when the original work was created. A similar but not synonymous term is reimagining, which indicates a greater discrepancy between, for example, a movie and the movie it is based on. A video game remake is a game that's built from the ground up. In some cases, only models and environments are remade, while retaining the game's original code. Remakes are produced for the purpose of modernizing a game for newer hardware and new audiences. Typically, a remake of such game software shares its title, fundamental gameplay concepts, and core story elements with the original. With the advent of such notable video game remakes such as Resident Evil 2 in 2019 (followed by Resident Evil 3 in 2020) and Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, these strict notions are being called into question and brought into a broader perspective. This can even be seen as early as 2004 with the release of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes as that title features newer gameplay additions and voice acting.
Remakes are often made by the original developer or copyright holder, although some are made by the fan community. If created by the community, video game remakes are sometimes also called fan games and can be seen as part of the retrogaming phenomenon.

Finally someone calling Thousand Year Door just a remaster. Looking at comparison videos and some of the animations are literally frame-by-frame exact matches like the mech boss. That alone proves Nintendo is just updating the old Gamecube code. More ambitious than something like the Pikmin HD ports, but regardless still revamping old code.

I would love to see Super Mario World getting remade, with modern graphics, and a few extra levels that might not have made it into the end product.
With the second Mario movie now confirmed, i feel that it could potentially help to promote the movie while giving newer players a more accessable throwback to oldschool Mario.
We already have remakes of the nes Mario games, so i feel that remaking Super Mario World would make alot of sense. I definitley agree with your take on remaking Super Metroid, and i do like the idea of remixing the layout of Zebes.
However aside from the jump physics being offputting, the need to cycle through missiles with select can also feel unintuitive to newcomers.

I'd love a remake of Ocarina of Time. It is one of my top 5 games of all time. I'd want them to improve the graphics to at least Twilight Princess level and improve the sound definition of the OST and other things. Also add an Original Mode and Master Quest Mode. Lastly, slightly change the gameplay to where Link can learn different sword skills like mentioned in this video. As well as make Link be able to become a accomplished mage with more magic spells. Like each new Medallion can teach Link a new powerful support or offensive spell. This is because I love using magic in video games more than melee attacks.

I enjoyed the combat of Dread, and the Dread element of the game, though the feeling of entering an Emmi zone and disponding over bad spawn RNG and speed running the area really pulled me out of the immersion.

I doubt OoT will ever get a proper remake, but I wouldn't mind a good port of OoT3D. Of course, wherever OoT goes, MM must follow (which might be one reason they don't want to remake OoT). I've been saying for a while now, I would actually prefer remakes of the very first two Zelda games. Give them some QoL changes akin to Link's Awakening, and maybe reduce the difficulty a bit...especially for AoL.

I think a remake of Golden Sun Dark Dawn to test the waters of the franchise, add in some QOL updates, full voice acting, trim some of the dialogue, add some side content with characters like Jenna, Felix, Sheba, Mia, and others to let us know what they were doing during the events of Dark Dawn. Both Broken Seal, Japanese name, and Lost Age could be remade later, but a wholistic remake of Dark Dawn and fixing the issues that didn't fully make the game a great. I still really love and will defend the game, but some people do have issues with some of the design decisions of Dark Dawn.

I understand some of your criticisms, however, while it isn't a perfect system, I'd like to point out that this (in a way) helps with game preservation. Cartridges won't work forever, the laser for reading discs in that PS2 isn't going to work forever, we're slowly losing our ability to be able to access these forms of media, and like all art, it's important to preserve. Even some more modern media we've lost simply because it was delisted from a store (cough cough Metal Gear series). In some horrifying scenarios, you as the consumer are taken advantage of because you no longer own a real license to any content you "buy", it's more like renting, at any time content can be removed and even erased from your library/game catalog, even if you purchased it. This makes the less of physical media in my eyes tragic, everyone wants to be on the cloud, I want to go back to owning what I pay for, and using it how and when I want to use it.
Maybe in a perfect world we'd just get backwards compatible systems going all the way back to the original console, but that'll never happen. I personally think the root of the problem mostly lies in copyright laws, but we're also not getting those changed anytime soon. It may not be the "original" Paper Mario TTYD or Luigi's Mansion 2, but it's at least a more modern version of it that audiences will continue to be able to enjoy that is built to modern technical standards. I think it's incredibly important to see how remakes/remasters help preserve the art (again, to an extent, it's hard to say that the Resident Evil 2 remake preserves the original Resident Evil 2 for example, they're too different of a game) so they can continue to be enjoyed.
I'd also argue that games from those times also hold a much higher cultural value, stories aren't written like they used to be, this helps us preserve our methods of storytelling, but that's an entirely different topic.

To me, "remake" is a technical term. It was remade using new code. Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D are not remakes. Sure, all the assets are new, except the collision, but Grezzo was handed the original source, ported to 3DS, then modified it to add the extras. A heavily modified port doesn't make something a remake. Just an updated version. So, truthfully, very very VERY few remakes are actually remakes. Final Fantasy VII remake is definitely a remake. There's no way you take the source of FFVII and mod it to be what FFVII Remake is. I believe in Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, the only asset that was reused was collision files, but only to make sure that everything else could start at ground 0 and the world would still be accurate.
With how many tiny details and obscure easter eggs exist in so many beloved games, it's usually safer to do a remaster or heavily modified port to make sure those obscure things are preserved even if the developers doing the work didn't know about it.

I don't really see the point of an Ocarina of Time remake. If they wanted people to play a version of the game that has modern QOL updates and looks betters, they could always port the 3DS version. If you're going to put that much effort into a remake, then might as well make an entirely new game.

I made sure to skim through every comment to ensure that I didn't copy anyone, and so I'd like to add that I think it would be great if there was a game called Fire Emblem: The Telius Chronicles, which is a collection of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, with perhaps a few quality of life improvements, like better supports in Radiant Dawn! Those games are criminally overpriced on the second-hand market, and so many new Fire Emblem players don't know what they are missing from the pre-Awakening era of Fire Emblem, where Intelligent Systems prioritized strategy and story over fan service.
