  • Tony Robinson is joined by science journalist Becky McCall to investigate the case of Second World War psychic Helen Duncan, whose freakishly accurate forecasts about military campaigns led to an MI5 investigation and her imprisonment under an archaic witchcraft law of 1735. Duncan was deemed a serious threat to national security, but she claimed she was merely visited by the ghosts of ex-servicemen who told her secrets she could never have known.
    Tony Robinson and science journalist Becky McCall step into the unknown to investigate whether past paranormal events should be taken seriously or dumped into history's litterbin.

      Actually the Witchcraft Act of 1735 as a product of Enlightenment declared "witchcraft" as fraudulent and made it a crime for a person to claim that any human being (including themself) had magical powers or was guilty of practising witchcraft.
      So, Helen Duncan - before the law -- was tried as a fraud.

    • @lynnkayee1015
      @lynnkayee1015 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She wasn't tried as a witch though.
      The law she was charged with made it illegal to accuse people of witchcraft. She was charged for claiming she had powers because she someone knew information she shouldn't and they didn't know who told her. So in other words they didn't know what else she would be told and would tell everyone. This was right when allies were prepping for their most important war efforts and they didn't want it all ruined.

    From what I understand is that the "medium" in question offered at least twice to
    give a demonstration for the benefit of the court of her receiving and passing on
    information to them or for them to witness. The court refused to allow her to give
    her evidence,- a demonstration in their presence showing that she was not receiving
    her information from the Germans they refused to allow her her self defense and
    convicted her anyway. It was a decision to put her out of the way out of circulation.

    Helen Duncan was a true physical medium who was searched by a nurse both externally and internally before and after every seance and produced amazing evidence of the existence of ectoplasm which exuded from her mouth and nose and then manifested into spirit formats of actual people without any physical body but were recognisable by the relatives in the room. The sailor who came through from HMS Barham in 1944 that had been torpedoed and sunk by the Germans was instantly recognised by his mother and has since been confirmed in 2018 as Sydney Fryer a Petty Officer on that ship. There can be no more categoric proof that Helen Duncan was a genuine physical medium and was hounded, persecuted, prosecuted and imprisoned by the authorities which left her physically and mentally demoralised and eventually led to her premature death. R.I.P Helen Duncan you were a true genuine physical medium.

    Helen Duncan was not the last woman to be tried as a witch in the UK; that was Janet Horne who was burned as a witch in Dornoch, Scotland in 1727. The last woman to be tried for this crime in England was Mary Hicks, executed in Huntingdon in 1716. The crime of witchcraft was abolished by the Witchcraft Act 1735, which was passed because belief in witchcraft was dying out among educated people during the Enlightenment. Unlike previous laws, which assumed that witches actually existed and were given supernatural powers by Satan, the 1735 Act was based on the assumption that anyone who claimed to be actually practising witchcraft was a cheater seeking to defraud people. Helen Duncan was prosecuted for falsely claiming to have spiritual powers, and the jury clearly believed that she was a fraud. She was not even the last person to be prosecuted under the 1735 Act, which was repealed in 1951; that was one Jane Yorke, who was convicted in 1944, a year after Helen Duncan, of "pretending to cause the spirits of deceased persons to be present". Unlike Helen she was not imprisoned but merely bound over to keep the peace.

      It seems that MI5 didn't really believe that Helen Duncan had genuine supernatural powers. If they did, she would have been spirited away to some secret location (Bletchley House with spooks) to spy on the Nazis (I see a nasty little man with a square moustache, he's...sitting on the potty and waving his hands wildly!) Their real motive would have been to shut her up to prevent her from causing demoralization and panic among the public. During the war, there were pervasive campaigns to silence any speech that could reveal critical information to the enemy (loose lips sink ships!), or any talk that smacked of defeatism or rebellion against the government. It is even possible that the Nazis practiced subversion by exploiting the British craze for mediums, which was only amplified by relatives seeking contact with dead servicemen.

    When the so-called psychic is asking questions he's not reading *anyone's mind* but probing for the guy's hot buttons. He asks very generalized questions about things anyone has a good chance of relating to, such as whether or not you have someone named Mary in your family. Anyone can observe human behavior and look for the high speed micro-expressions combined with posture changes, sudden nervous tics and use the moment to double down on the last question before making a commitment to a particular statement.

      Its curious how 'skeptics' profess that there's nothing extraordinary going on, yet they continue to seek out such cases and show extreme interest in what they claim is plain old boring fraud.
      Skeptics act as if they came out of the womb with knowledge of, and ability to exercise the scientific method - as if every belief and core value they assimilated since birth was empirically tested before being accepted or rejected, and therefore everything they now believe has been tested to be true. As if they have exercised their 'skepticism' against every piece of info they have ever come across since before they could even talk. This is obviously absurd, and everyone, including the 'skeptic', naturally holds views & beliefs that have bypassed any 'scientific' test, and therefore, any new information (such as 'paranormal phenomena') is filtered through an individuals personal & subjective lens of pre-ingrained beliefs that were never subjected to any kind of 'scientific' scrutiny. I would guess that a hypothetical life-long 'skeptic' who had TRULY been skeptical of EVERYTHING they had ever learned of would have a very unusual and exceptional outlook and would likely reject much of what today's 'skeptics' hold to be blatantly obvious - MUCH different to what one find's in those that like to think of themselves as 'skeptics'.
      People will examine 'facts' according to deeply-held beliefs (which are largely acquired long before any knowledge of the scientific method), and despite frequently levelling such accusations against others, skeptics are nowhere near immune to this process, yet they are invariably and absolutely convinced of their own 'exceptionalism' to any kind of inherent bias or dogma.

    Having done medium work, i can say it is a gift you have and i am not sure why it works or where the information comes from. Its a feeling thing and not a brain one. I read many people free of charge and enjoyed helping people with their lost loved ones.
    Some times you get perfect results and others not quite as good, but i did impress every single person i read and scared many others as they became fearful of the reality of what i was telling them.
    I have had a couple of bad demon experiences and 1 Angelic experience, so know there are both for a fact. I stopped reading because it started to drain me and brought me bad luck. I started to read the Bible and this states "Do not get involved with talking to spirits or medium ship etc"
    If i am around someone whom i start to get an Adrenalin rush i will ask them if they mind me telling them about someone, as i am not pushing this and it helps them so much and brings them comfort. This i found does make me feel happy and its very rare i have had these kind of experiences.
    Most witches today are very false and making lots of money over the internet by giving them hope over loved ones that have gone to another person. Even so if they were excellent its never a good idea to force your love on someone or force your ex to be tormented by you.
    Good honest Witches tend to help you with your life and your problems and can help to bring you hope, luck and prosperity if you stick to what they say, but these are so rare i would say in England alone you would only find an handful and then you would never get to know who they were unless you knew someone who knew one of these gifted persons.

    Some questions that arise at once:
    1) If the Barham had sunk but her loss was not announced, what reason would relatives of crew members have for attending a seance?
    2) The man who shows Tony the upstairs room where the seance allegedly took place says the apparition of "Syd" wore a hat with HMS BARHAM on it. Syd was a petty officer (sub-lieutenant) and sub-lieutenants wore officers uniform of peaked caps. Only able seamen wore the flat sailors cap with the ships name.
    3) In wartime, for obvious reasons of security, the ships name would usually not be shown on sailors hats. "HMS BARHAM" would therefore be replaced with just "HMS".
    Three significant inconsistencies just 9 minutes into the programme.

    • @ShizukuSeiji
      @ShizukuSeiji 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      More thoughts...
      It bugged the heck out of me how little effort the 'team' put into investigating Duncan's trial. I am also surprised they spent so much time covering the Barham/Syd incident yet focussed so little time on discussing the Hood sinking claim. If Duncan did indeed make this claim before Hood even sank, then what is going on here? Speaking to the spirits of the dead is one issue. Precognition is a completely separate 'discipline' of the paranormal. Things just don't add up.
      Also those photos of ectoplasm; so obviously laughably fake. I wonder why the team even made such a programme considering those dreadful end-of-the-pier fakes.

    • @MrArthoz
      @MrArthoz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I don't really mind about the issue of precognition or spiritual power whether it exist or not. Never really care....if they are real fine. I'm not even scared of ghost....if they exist then I got the ghost of my ancestors all around me. Logically no evil spirit could be more dangerous than the combined spirits of my family far back into the dawn of time.
      The main issue that I see is the matter of national security. On one hand medium should be more discreet with what they know or what they tell the public. On the other hand the authorities should act proactively to put into seclusion people who could cause secrets to go out. Not prosecution but temporary put them in safe custody....home arrest and perhaps give them pension or financial support for the trouble.
      Many people don't understand that news like the sinking of the "Hood" could cause chaos and demoralization. I know this first hand being in south east asia where now we have ISIS terrorist spreading in our region. The authorities need to censor news and information. Not withholding the freedom of speech but for national security.
      Even simple rumour of bombs or death threats could disrupt public peace and lead to chaos. So I think that is what the documentary is trying to explain....though sadly they failed to properly focus on this issue.
      Medium or spiritualist....even preachers should be sensitive of the present political or social climate.

      Well, I can answer your first question from experience. When a friend of mine was killed in the first Gulf War, his parents received notice that he'd been killed in action. No other information was made available until nine months later. Some allied POWs were rescued from the Taliban. It was only then that we learned Brian had died in a first, failed attempt. A helicopter shot down, killing him and four others. Two survivors. It's most likely the next of kin knew their sailors were dead or missing, but not the circumstances behind it, until after D-Day.
      Dunno anything about the hats, though. And I totally agree with your assessments. Too much of this is ridiculous.

    • @r13hd22
      @r13hd22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      1. People do not only attend a seance to speak to the recently dead...some people did it for entertainment, for advice about various reasons.
      2. Actually, all members of a crew would have a cap with the ships name on it, just because they were an officer does not mean they could not put a different cap on in death. I would assume you could choose what clothing you wish to wear at any given time and not have to wear what you died in for eternity if there even is an eternity for us.
      3. you are applying life with a possible life after death.

The problem the British security services had was that they felt Helen Duncan's revelation about this tragedy was a potential threat to national morale at a crucial time in WW2. They had to find a legal way of stopping her and the only thing on the statute book was this ridiculous old Witchcraft Act which virtually everyone had forgotten about.because no-one had taken witchcraft seriously in England for 200 years. This was why it only got repealed in 1951.

At the highlight of the Event all the cameras went off at the same time. When I had the rolls developed at Walmart, the pictures were exactly the same. I was in the main frame with my son. And there was a mist coming up out of me in a serpentine fashion. The mist was shaped as a human. Serpentine, rising from me, but it was obviously my deceased daughter. While the cameras were going off. I could see everything below me for a minute. I could see everyone as if I were looking from the branches of the trees that were 6 feet above me. ALL of the pictures from ALL of the cameras showed the same misty person rising out of me. Some of us have it ALL the time. Some of us have it sometimes.

Hearing creepy family stories & horror movies across from a graveyard was scary aa a child but incredibly exciting & thrilling too! Although I was raised Christian l never had any trouble mixing our religion with our otherwordly beliefs. I never considered it 'the occult'. In fact it opened my mind more to other possibilities!

The gifts have been given to those with the responsiblity to use them. We have free will, beyond instinct, beyond knowing. Use it for goodness, and goodness will return. To deny it exists, is to be unprepared. Protect yourself, be aware.

    I have always thought if someone was truly a medium, they would go stark raving mad before they reached adulthood. Can you imagine being a small child, and having a recently dead person telling you they were killed by their parent who had been sexually assaulting them? And what would have happened if you had repeated what the spirit was telling you? Or if a spirit was trying to tell you your step-parent wanted you dead? Or if it wasn’t even the big stuff, just the endless line of spirits want you to tell their family where they had left a key, to look in an unknown safety deposit box, etc.? I mean, what do we call people today who hear voices? Schizophrenic, deranged, mad....if you could somehow keep from being locked away, I think you’d NEVER tell someone you spoke with the dead because of what they would do to you if they didn’t believe you. And the only thing worse would be if they did......

      The part about these people being deranged or mad is not completely correct. In many Traditional cultures, a Shaman, who sometimes did some of the same things as a medium, was a valued member of the community. The stereotype is of a deranged person living on the edge of the community and controlling people through fear, but this was rarely the case. Shamans were usually well integrated members of the community with families who participated in all of work and activities that anyone else did. They were very functional, sane people who had what Anthropologists and some Psychologists call an "expanded consciousness" . Living within a small community and interacting with these people regularly, that could not get away with exploiting or manipulating people without being kicked out of the community. And yes, these very functional people contacted spirits and Gods and belived deeply in what they were doing. And even more interesting, I have read reports by Anthropologists and explorers who were baffled to experience that Shamans were often absolutely right. There's are a lot of accounts concerning the Inuit and the Aboriginies. I one recorded by Greenland explorer Peter Freuchen, a complete skeptic, a Shaman engaged in some kind of heavy work suddenly stood up, tranced out and calmly stated that so-and-so and his wife, who were living a distance away, had decided to come to visit and would be here in two days. He then went back to his work. Sure enough the guy and his wife showed up two days later. This was around 1900 when there was no communication between isolated communities. There was another incident where the entire community was packing up to go on the annual Caribou hunt, and the Shaman suddenly said the Caribou would be in an entirely different location. Everyone, who were risking starvation if he was wrong went to the new location and the Caribou were there. I am an Anthropology Major and a retired Counselor, and I personally believe that humans developed abilities like this to survive. Mediums may have some residual abilities of this nature, though there is a lot of fraud.
