Even 400 years ago, I think it's strange that nobody seems to have asked this one question: If the accused people were really witches with supernatural powers, why didn't they use these powers to defend themselves from their torturers?

    • @earlefrost5512
      @earlefrost5512 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Well, SOME folks, such as the Trumpite clan, are like this. OTHERS, however, strive to find out more about what they don't understand - this is the flip side of humnity, and it uses tools such as science and philosophy: the exercise of reason and logic in order to try to make sense of things we don't understand fully. A sizeable portion of the human race reacts to the Unknown in this manner - but its too small by far, and the ones who react with fear and hatred, are far more vocal and violent - and power hungry, alas: they want everyone else to think and believe the way they do, even if it takes much evil: lying, violence, warfare and the like. If we could teach logic, problem solving on a cosmic or abstract level, and the scientific method in our educational system MUCH better than we do now, we would see progress in fighting fear, hatred and mass hysteria.

My husbands family has ancestors who testified in the 1692 Salem MA witch trials here in America.
It had always been a very embarrassing part of family lore and none of it was ever talked about. My husband's parents knew very little about it and my husband even less. When our son was in 8th grade in the late 1990's he was on a school trip focusing on the witch trails...when a friend pointed out our son's full name in the archives. It seems that the man .... who we were so honored to call our son after... had been a witness for the prosecution and had helped cause the horrid death of a close family member.
It's a SICKENING part of family history that will never go away. Needless to say..
    our son now goes
    by his middle name.

Debra and the other one; Christians are not to blame, religion is not to blame. People in power using religion and God and a person's beliefs to gain control over the masses is the problem. I can't argue with ignorant people because Truth and knowledge evade those minds. You have shown your ignorance in your response. You clearly don't understand my comments nor do you have an accurate view of history therefore you cannot clearly see the real causes of current issues in society. I'm on your side Talitha. It takes extreme ego-driven delusion to believe that you alone are correct about the origin of the universe and the existence of something that is supernatural, and can therefore neither be proven or disproven. Everyone must take on faith what they believe happened or didn't happen at the universe's inception. No one has the right to enforce those beliefs as laws that take precedence over individual rights and freedom which are laid out by the US Constitution. Didn't the God of the Bible create man- Adam and Eve- with free will and the ability to exercise choice? Doesn't it say that only God alone has the right to cast judgement?
James 4:11-12 (NIV): "11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[a] or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you-who are you to judge your neighbor?"

And that is why China use to be the most powerful country. It already had a proper judicatory system, many aspect still be used today. Of course, their judicatory system still suck compare to the modern system, but compare to then western world, it was way better.
What the Chinese use to do, is under the Emperor, there is the State Department. The State Department is usually administer by the Prime Minister or by the Emepror assisted by the Secretary of State (although much like modern US, the Secretary of State is the one in practice administering the State Department) subject to the State Department there is the Justice Department, subject to the Justice Department there are two independent bodies including the Imperial High Court and the Imperial Police (similar to modern FBI and US Marshal service) Local judicatory is simpler, with many judges appointed by the local magistrate and the Magistrate is the Chief Justice. The concept of defense lawyers was introduced during the Ming dynasty other believe it is the Song dynasty, where all people stand trial are allow to have legal defense, search warrant system was also introduced in the Ming dynasty, although it search warrant was been used on and off, due to not all Emperors use it, it is only when this idea was pass to the west, did the Americans first make search warrant a permenant system been used.

I'm just really fascinated by those old times. The evolution of the language is so cool. It seems perhaps "s" and "f" were related or even once the same. Also, the word trial used to be spelled "tryall" as in try-all. Really interesting. I'd love to read more!

No, the minuscule s was just written in a « long s » style whenever it was between two other letters !

Knowledge is power, they said. But knowing nothing can be dangerous.
Christianity and superstition, made this gruesome killings come true.

A.D. Green Probably a fair bit. Along with others such as food poisoning from things like moldy bread which is thought to have been a major cause for the "fits and visions" during the Salem trials.

The end of Hopkins was not as stated, he was sentnfor trial and actually held in Colcherster castle, to this day a sign on one of the cells in the castle is clearly marked as being where he was held before trial.
His torture included plunging a neddle into the spine of many women who he accused, and many were not just poor people but those of statue in the commuity, he really was one of the most evil of men of the time and much of written history records this in Essex and Norfolk and Suffol.k

It’s so dumb because whoever Hopkins accused of witchcraft was tortured until they confessed to get the torture to stop. Did the people not realize that it’s a bit strange that they only confessed after days of non stop torture? Super frustrating
